99 KZ Country: Interview with Rider Kiesner

Western showman Rider Kiesner visited the KHAZ Studio to talk with Theresa Trapp.

When the Phillipsburg Rodeo stampedes into town August 3-4-5, it’ll bring a treat for western fans!

Western showman Rider Kiesner will be on hand during every performance of the rodeo to enthrall crowds with his western-style art.

Kansas Biggest Rodeo-goers will see him trick rope, spin guns, and do some good old fashioned whip-crackin’! He’ll even bring his fire whips: two six foot whips, soaked in lighter fluid, that he lights during his show as he cracks them. “They throw a big flame,” he said. “They’re pretty cool.”

The 25 year old cowboy knows how to entertain. He first learned how to trick rope from a Will Rogers trick roping kit his parents gave him when he was nine years old and the family lived in Colorado. “It was cold that winter and we moved all the furniture back (in the living room), and I trick roped in the house,” he remembers.

From there it only grew. He polished his showmanship and learned the art of gun spinning and bullwhip cracking to add to his repertoire.

And since then, he’s entertained at some of the biggest rodeos and wild west shows in the nation and across the world: the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas the last three years, Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days, Clovis, Calif., San Angelo, Texas, and Prescott, Ariz., and at the Cavalia, an equestrian and performing art show that toured last year in South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

He’s also won numerous awards: four times as world champion trick roper, twice as world champion gun spinner, and the all-around western performer twice, at the world finals in Las Vegas and Tombstone, Ariz.

Kiesner loves to entertain. “It’s something I’ve always done,” he said. “To be able to make a living by performing is the best.”

Kiesner will perform with his western arts during each night of rodeo at the rodeo grounds north of town, August 3-5. The rodeo begins each night at 8 pm.

A barbecue for all ticket holders will be held on August 3, and live music by the band Country Highway will entertain after the rodeo on August 4-5. The annual parade will be at 2 pm on August 5.

Tickets for the rodeo are $18 for reserved adult seating and $14 for reserved child seating. General admission tickets for Thursday, August 3 are $15 for adults and $11 for children. General admission tickets for Fri., August 4 and Sat., August 5 are $16 for adults and $12 for children.   For more information, visit the rodeo’s website at KansasBiggestRodeo.com or its Facebook page (search for Kansas Biggest Rodeo.)

99 KZ Country: Interview with Mark Swingler and Slim Garner

khaz pburg rodeo two rodeo clowns 2016Kansas’ Biggest Rodeo in Phillipsburg is August 4, 5 and 6, 2016.

Rodeo Clowns Mark Swingler and Slim Garner visited the KHAZ Studio to talk with Theresa Trapp.

Phillipsburg rodeo fans will think they’re seeing double at Kansas’ Biggest Rodeo.

There will be not just one rodeo clown in the arena, but two.

Slim Garner returns with his brand of comedy, and he will be joined by Mark Swingler.

Slim will bring his “World’s Largest Toybox” – his semi-trailer loaded with a Cowboy Cadillac, barbecue grill, fishing boat, and wheelie truck. In 2012, fans were treated to Slim’s acts.

This will be Mark Swingler’s first trip to Phillipsburg. The Austin, Texas man’s main act is his signature firetruck: a refurbished 1964 Volkswagon bus, cut in half. Swingler “answers” a fire call in the arena, driving the bus in and putting it on its end when he hits the brakes. “I can get all four tires off the ground,” he laughs.

Having two rodeo clowns at one rodeo isn’t common, but it’s a real advantage. While one clown steps out of the arena to prepare for an act, the other clown can stay in and banter with rodeo announcer Randy Corley. “Phillipsburg likes (rodeo) acts, and especially big acts,” Swingler said. “This will be great. Rodeo fans won’t see the same acts the whole weekend.”

Slim grew up in Fredonia, Kan., and now lives in Whitman, Ariz. He has a nine year old daughter named Jacquelyn who is a member of the Arizona Sweethearts, a rodeo queen program for young girls. Mark has been married to his wife Tami for 25 years. They have a daughter, Jessica, who is a cake designer in Austin.

Slim will work as barrelman during the rodeo.

Slim and Mark will entertain between events during each night of the Phillipsburg rodeo August 4-6. Performances begin at 8 pm each night. Tickets are $16 for reserved adult seating and $12 for reserved child seating, and general admission tickets are $14 for adults and $11 for children. To purchase tickets, call Heritage Insurance at 785-543-2448. For more information, visit the rodeo’s website at KansasBiggestRodeo.com or, on Facebook, search for “ksbiggestrodeo”.

Swingler and Garner will be available for photos and autographs at First National Bank in Phillipsburg Friday, August 5, 2016 from 10 am to 11:30 am and look for them in the parade Saturday, August 6 at 2 pm in Phillipsburg.

Fallen Hays hero serves as inspiration for Little Texas song

Nichols

In a video uploaded to YouTube this week, Dwayne O’Brien of Little Texas talks about the inspiration for the song “Slow Ride Home.”

As the country band neared Hays, American flags greeted them at every turn — they were just ahead of the funeral procession for fallen soldier Bryan Nichols.

Nichols, a 1998 graduate of Thomas More Prep-Marian, was killed in 2011 in a helicopter accident in Afghanistan.

KZ Country’s Theresa Trapp had a chance to talk to Del Gray of Little Texas last year about “Slow Ride Home” before the band’s appearance at the Graham County Fair. Click below to hear the interview.

Rodeo Clown and Barrelman Robbie Hodges visited the KHAZ Studio to talk with Theresa Trapp.

ROLLING WITH THE FLOW

Rodeo barrelman to entertain fans, protect bullfighters Phillipsburg

Robbie Hodges is living the dream.

He’s seeing the world, doing what he wants, making people laugh, all while hanging out in rodeo arenas across the country.

The Cave Springs, Georgia man will serve as barrelman and rodeo clown for this year’s Kansas’ Biggest Rodeo in Phillipsburg July 31-August 2. In other words, he “works” the barrel, moving it to its best spot to provide an oasis of safety for the bull riders and bullfighters. And if there are slow spots during the rodeo, he fills them with jokes and back-and-forth banter with the announcer.

He got his start in rodeo as a bareback rider, but he was always the jokester, the funny guy. “I hid my fear through funny comedy,” he says. “When I got ready to retire (from bareback riding), I wanted to be a barrelman. Fourteen illustrious years later, here I am,” he jokes.

He loves cracking jokes, even at his own expense. “I hate to say it, but I’m good. I’m not like (Seattle Seahawks football player) Richard Sherman,” he cracks. “I try to be cool. Hey, I’m a successful man. I live in an RV.”

He’s rodeoed at every corner of the country, from California to Davie, Florida, to New York, and Puyallup, Washington. And he’s won awards for his work. Robbie was the 2010 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo barrelman and an alternate the next year. He has been nominated for some of the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association’s highest honors: Clown of the Year twice, Comedy Act of the Year twice, and Coors Man in the Can four times.

In Phillipsburg, he’ll provide the laughs and banter with the announcer while cowboys are getting ready to compete. He loves the “walk and talk” – being in the arena, cracking jokes during slow times. “I like spontaneity and comedy. I like quick and funny.” Robbie comes up with his material off the cuff. “Most of my stuff is from the situation and the crowd. Ninety percent is from the crowd, and the other twelve percent I make up,” he jokes.

It’s Robbie’s second time in Phillipsburg. He worked the PBR in 2013 there.

He loves what he does, even when he jokes about it. “I don’t get too caught up in rodeo. I stop off at them because they pay, but the rest of the time, I’m seeing the world, playing the guitar and hanging out.”

The Phillipsburg Rodeo is July 31-August 1-2 at 8 pm each night. Tickets are $15 for reserved adult seats and $11 for children ages 3-12. General admission tickets are $13 for adults and $10 for children. Tickets are available at Heritage Insurance in Phillipsburg (785-543-2448). For more information, visit KansasBiggestRodeo.com.

Rodeo Clown and Barrelman Justin Rumford visited the KHAZ Studio to talk with Theresa Trapp.

Justin Rumford – Rodeo Clown

The clown for the 2013 Kansas’ Biggest Rodeo is no stranger to Phillipsburg.

Justin Rumford has been coming to Phillipsburg since he was in eighth grade, always rodeo related.

He competed in high school rodeo there, winning the saddle bronc riding title three consecutive years in the late 1990’s. Then he competed there as a steer wrestler, before being a truck driver and help for Beutler and Son Rodeo.

Now he returns as rodeo clown and funnyman.

Justin, the 2012 PRCA Clown of the Year, is naturally funny and quick witted. He’s always looking for new and current material. “I watch funny movies and try to keep up with what’s going on (in pop culture),” he said. “I try to make my acts like skits: short, fun and funny, not complicated.”

The Ponca City, Okla. clown will bring a variety of acts to town, including his Steve Irwin Crocodile Hunter, Motorcycle Act, and Basketball Act.

No matter what he does, he’s having fun. “I have a great time, no matter what’s going on. I just keep a good attitude and have a ball, and it’s contagious.”
