KHAZ Country Music News: George Jones’ Funeral Set for This Morning at the Grand Ole Opry House

khaz george jones 20120418George Jones‘s funeral Thursday morning at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville will be open to the public.  The service will begin at 10 a.m. Central time.  Fans who can’t make it to the service can watch the funeral live on GAC and CMT at 11 a.m. Eastern.

Several more stars have shared their feelings for and memories of Jones since his passing last Friday at age 81:

Brenda Lee: “George has been my friend all these years and I was thinking the other day about a song that he had out called ‘Whose Gonna Fill Their Shoes?’ And that’s never more poignant than right now.”

Barbara Mandrell: “He was always the most loving and fun as well as being the most gifted, talented singer that…ever existed.”

William Lee Golden: “There was no generation gaps in his appeal. He appealed to every generation. I don’t really know of many people that’s had that appeal.”

Joe Diffie: “He was the best country singer ever. And I mean I’ve heard Merle Haggard say that. Saw it on a tweet actually. And you know I remember Waylon Jennings, to quote him, said, ‘If everybody could sound like they wanted they’d sound just like George Jones.’”

Former first lady Laura Bush and Kenny Chesney are among those scheduled to speak at today’s funeral.  Brad Paisley, Alan Jackson, Vince Gill, Patty Loveless, Randy Travis, Kid Rock, Wynonna, The Oak Ridge Boys, Charlie Daniels, Travis Tritt and Ronnie Milsap are scheduled to perform musical tributes to Jones.

KHAZ Country Music News: Brantley Gilbert Rising Up to Tim McGraw’s Challenge on Two Lanes of Freedom Tour

khaz brantley gilbert 20130422Brantley Gilbert is hitting the road with Tim McGraw on Tim’s Two Lanes of Freedom tour Thursday night in Birmingham, and Brantley knows the country superstar expects him to bring his A-game. The two share the same booking agent, and Tim sent Brantley a message through that agent.

“He was like, ‘You better tell that boy to bring it! You know, this is going to be a competition every night,'” Brantley tells ABC News Radio.  “I was like, dude, I’m competing with Tim McGraw?  Are you crazy, you know?  Alright.  I’ll bring it!”

Tim’s competitive nature shows up in his commitment to physical fitness on the road too, and Brantley is shying away from going head-to-head with Tim when it comes to workouts.

He says, “I told him I’d lift with him, but I’m not doing all the cardio stuff, ’cause I smoke.  I’ll die.”

Tim is also known to take off his shirt and show off his ripped body for the cameras, so can Brantley’s female fans expect him to show a little skin during these workouts too?

“Not at all,” Brantley says with a laugh. “No.  Shirtless isn’t really my thing, unless I’m fighting.”

KHAZ Country Music News: Curb Records Sues Tim McGraw Again

khaz tim mcgraw 20130315Will it ever end? The legal battle between Curb Records and Tim McGraw seems to be heating up again, with Curb filing a lawsuit against McGraw and his new record label, Big Machine Records, on Monday. The new suit is based on a claim from Curb that McGraw’s recently released album, Two Lanes of Freedom, belongs to Curb.

According to Nashville’s The City Paper, Curb claims the songs included on Two Lanes of Freedom were recorded while Tim was still an artist on Curb Records.  The label is seeking compensatory and punitive damages. They’re also seeking an injunction to keep McGraw from recording for another label until he has fulfilled his contract with Curb.  The label claims McGraw owes them one more studio album.

Curb and McGraw’s suits and countersuits against each other concerning his last album released on Curb, Emotional Traffic, seemed to be settled last year when a Nashville judge decided McGraw could record for another label. An appeal from Curb on that ruling was dismissed.

KHAZ Country Music News: Eric Church Only Wanted to Write Songs When He Moved to Nashville

khaz eric church 20121214Eric Church is one of country music’s top performers these days, but he didn’t set out to be in the spotlight when he first moved to Nashville.  He came to town looking to be a songwriter hoping to get other artists to record his songs.  That path just didn’t work out due to Eric’s personal style of songwriting.

He tells SPIN, “I wrote a batch of songs when I got here years ago and people always said they couldn’t sing them because they just sounded like they were about me.  I couldn’t change the lines to make it more about them, so I started thinking more about the artist’s role and kind of found myself.”

Eric is now writing songs for his upcoming studio album, which he’ll record this year.  He’s playing select dates this summer too.  Go to EricChurch.com for his tour schedule.

KHAZ Country Music News: Jason Aldean Files for Divorce

khaz jason aldean 20121112Jason Aldean is officially calling it quits with his wife of 12 years, Jessica. Jason filed for divorce in Williamson County, Tennessee last week, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple has two children.

Aldean was photographed getting affectionate with former American Idol contestant Brittany Kerr last September in Los Angeles. The singer issued an apology, but it seems his marriage never recovered. Jason attended the ACM Awards alone earlier this month in Las Vegas.

Aldean released a statement asking for privacy for his family saying, “This is a really tough time for my entire family.  Jessica and I have been together since we were teenagers.  We’ve been through a lot of ups and downs over the years as we grew up together as a couple.  She will always be important to me because she is the mother of my children, and I know that we will both always make our daughters our #1 priority.”

Jason also asked that fans take pause before taking sides. He says, “I’ve learned that everyone always rushes to judgment when they hear news like this.  That’s really hard because no one knows anything about our relationship but us.  I understand that because of my job, I have to go through a lot of this in the public eye, but for my girls’ sake I really wish people would give us some level of privacy and at the very least be respectful of them.”

KHAZ Country Music News: Chesney Establishes Boston Fund

khaz spread the love a fund for boston 20130430With the assistance of WKLB/Boston, Kenny Chesney has established Spread The Love: A Fund For Boston throughBoston Medical Center to pay for prosthetics and post-acute care needed by Boston Marathon bombing victims. Launched with an undisclosed “sizable” donation from Chesney, the fund will also receive proceeds from sales of the song “Spread The Love” from his new album, as well as direct donations.

“Music can be healing,” Chesney says. “When you’re at your lowest, it can inspire – the way these athletes, their friends, family and the city of Boston inspire me. I want to give back to the ones who need it, but also to heal all of us a little bit. So, spread the love.”

“BMC cared for many of the patients most seriously injured in the Boston Marathon bombings, patients who have a long journey of recovery ahead,” says Kate Walsh, BMC President/CEO. “Over time, the spotlight will fade, but their needs will go on. We thank Mr. Chesney for stepping forward to make sure these and all the Marathon patients have all the support they need over the long haul.”

“We are extremely grateful to Kenny Chesney for spearheading a Boston-based fund that will meet real immediate and future needs: prosthetics and prosthetic therapy for victims,” says WKLB PD Mike Brophey. “Boston Medical Center, the patients with prosthetic needs, and the City of Boston will quickly and directly benefit from the Spread The Love Fund.”

The song can be purchased here and direct donations can be made here.

KHAZ Country Music News: Country Stars Salute Willie Nelson on His 80th Birthday

khaz willie nelson 20130430Country music icon Willie Nelson celebrates his 80th birthday Tuesday, but he’s just as vital to the country format as ever.  Willie is even featured on Kenny Chesney‘s Life on a Rock album, hitting stores this week, on the song “Coconut Tree.”  That track talks about the virtues of leaving all your troubles behind while lounging on the island, and Kenny actually lived that song out over the holiday season last year with Willie himself.

“I went to Hawaii and sat around a poker table with Willie for a couple of days. And trust me, we climbed our own “Coconut Tree,” Kenny says with a laugh alluding to Willie’s well-documented love of marijuana.  “It was a lot of fun.”

Kenny adds that it’s an honor to reunite with Willie for this album saying, “I think I’ve done more duets with Willie than anybody in the business, I think.  He sang on my Christmas record years ago.  I think this makes the fourth or fifth one.  Something like that.”

Willie welcomed another country star, Darius Rucker, into his Hawaiian home back in 2000.  Darius was actually down there visiting his vegetarian, actor friend Woody Harrelson, and the lack of meat at Woody’s house was really getting to Darius.  After about eight days, Darius jumped at the chance to head over to Willie’s house with Woody for a little golf and red meat.

Once Willie found out he’d been staying with Woody for about eight days, Willie told Darius, “You need some meat, don’t ya?”

Darius says, “It was great.  His wife was in the kitchen cooking hamburgers and hot dogs.  I spent a couple of days playing golf with Willie and Kris Kristofferson.  That’s still one of the great memories of my life.”

Even those stars who don’t hang out with Willie that often can tell you he is vital to country music as we know it today.  Tim McGraw, whose favorite Willie song is “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain,” tells ABC News Radio, “I think the great thing about country music is the unique stylists that we’ve had over the years.  The guys who have really blazed a trail of individuality, and nobody’s done that like Willie Nelson has.”

Noting Willie’s early success as a songwriter, Tim goes on to marvel at his run of unique run of hits in the ’70s and ’80s covering everything from duets with Julio Iglesias and Ray Charles to his classic standards album, Stardust.

Tim compares Willie to another musical icon with longevity, Bruce Springsteen, saying, “I don’t think in any genre of music has there been anybody quite like Willie Nelson, and I think he’s one of those guys that will go down, right up there with Springsteen, as one of those guys who’s just part of the fabric of America and the fabric of what makes this country great.”

For Kip Moore, Willie is right up there with his other musical hero, Bob Seger, when it comes to conveying sincerity in a vocal performance.

“Whether it’s all B.S., I don’t know,” Kip says, “but there’s something about their voices that captivate me more than anybody’s as far as drawing me in and believing every single word and holding on to every single word they’re saying.”

Trace Adkins explains that Willie would have been lionized by country fans even if he’d never gone beyond writing country classics like “Crazy.”

Trace tells ABC News Radio, “He has written some classic, classic songs.  I think that’s the biggest thing about Willie.  He’s the whole package.  He’s not just an artist.  He’s not just a singer, not just a guitar player.  He’s a songwriter.  He’s the whole package.  He’s just so unique that he’s just Willie.”

Willie even played a big role in the vocal development of Little Big Town‘s Kimberly Schlapman, who sang a Willie song during her very early days of performing back home in Georgia.

She tells ABC News Radio, “When I was about 13 years old, I started singing publicly a lot, and I would buy those accompaniment tapes to sing with, and my first one I bought was ‘Always on My Mind,’ and I sang that at fairs.”

A host of stars have posted videos and messages at HappyBirthdayWillie.org wishing Willie a happy birthday including fellow Farm Aid founders Neil Young, Dave Matthews and John MellencampStephen Colbert, Sting and Bonnie Raitt also contributed birthday wishes for Willie on the site.

KHAZ Country Music News: Kip Moore Hates the Fashion Designing Aspect of His Music Career

khaz kip moore 20121129Kip Moore is a very hands-on artist in control of everything from the way his self-written songs sound on his album to the way his stage show comes off on the road.  That control extends to the t-shirts and other items on sale at Kip’s concerts, but he admits being a part-time fashion designer for those merch items isn’t his cup of tea.

Says Kip, “I’m very in control of a lot of things, and the merch thing has been one thing that’s made me just want to pull my hair out.  My forte is not drawing, you know what I mean?”

Kip works with people who design tour merchandise to come up with the t-shirt designs, but it’s a tough process for him.

“People turn in stuff to me, and I’m like, ‘No! No! That’s not it! That’s not it!” Kip explains.  “But I don’t know what to do, and I don’t know what to tell ’em.”

Kip’s goal is to make his concert t-shirts look cool so people want to wear them all the time.

He says, “I’m trying to keep it simple.  I don’t want to put my face on a big, gigantic shirt.  I mean a big face on a shirt — I just don’t want to do that.”

Once Kip has decided on the t-shirt designs, he’s more than happy to get back to doing what he does best.

He adds, “I’d rather just stick to writing songs, man.”
