KHAZ Country Music News: Trace Adkins Ready to Rumble on All-Star Celebrity Apprentice

khaz trace adkins 20130228Trace Adkins promises All-Star Celebrity Apprentice is going to be a “party every day,” and judging from the trailer featuring the male contestants, it lives up to his word.

The clip not only features Trace wearing an apron and an Italian chef’s hat, but hamming it up in a leopard print caveman dress with a banana leaf on his head.

And as you might expect, things get confrontational for the season 7 runner-up very quickly.  “You’re not going to be able to hold back,” he teases. “You’re gonna have to come guns up right out of the chute.”

For Trace, that includes telling Stephen Baldwin, “You be nice to Marilu (Henner) or I’m gonna kill you.” He also threatens to fit Gary Busey with a shock collar, and to “slap the [bleep]” out of another contestant.

He wryly offers, “They called me and said ‘We need you for your energy and enthusiasm.’”

You can check out Trace’s antics for yourself when All-Star Celebrity Apprentice premieres March 3 on NBC.

Winners: Chris Young Tickets with 99 KZ Country

khaz chris young 20120424

Chris Young concert at the Stiefel Theatre in Salina.

Thursday, March 7, 2013 at 8pm

Congratulations to Karen Howland and Brenda Dechant!

When an artist looks back on his or her own career, there are always moments he or she can point to where there was a shift to another level. Those defining moments tend to be easy to spot with the benefit of hindsight but more difficult to see without the passage of time. Yet Chris Young has a sense that something is happening. “I really do believe in timing,” says Young. “Everybody has a different point in their career when things start to come together and click, when it’s your time.” And as far as timing – Young’s career is ticking like a Swiss watch. The last three singles Chris Young has released have all hit #1 on the charts, including the smash hit “Gettin’ You Home,” a song that earned him his first ever Grammy nomination. “Music is why I’m here and it’s something I can’t live without,” says Young. “It’s what I’m built to do.” His self titled first album would go on to earn Young the title of best selling new male artist for 2006 and a nod for the Academy of Country Music’s Top New Male Vocalist award. Young doubled down on the success of his first record with the release of his second CD, The Man I Want To Be. Any concern over maintaining momentum vanished when the album powered right through the dreaded sophomore slump with three back-to-back #1 singles. The impressive streak started with the title track, picked up steam with “Gettin’ You Home,” and was then followed by a song that would earn Chris Young a place into the history books. “Voices” was originally the first single released from Man. It made its initial run up the chart in late 2008 but stalled just inside the Top 40. When the label made the decision to give it a second go two years later, it soared all the way to #1. “The last time (that) happened was 25 years ago with ‘On The Other Hand’ for Randy Travis,” beams Young, thrilled to have that connection with one his musical heroes.
Young’s all around accomplishments as an entertainer also earned him one the industry’s highest honors: his first ever Grammy nomination for Best Male Country Vocal Performance for “Gettin’ You Home.”

Tickets:  $46, $37

KHAZ Country Music News: The Band Perry Reveals the Moment They Knew “Better Dig Two” Was a Big Hit

khaz band perry 20120724After The Band Perry took the music world by storm with their breakthrough hit, “If I Die Young,” the sibling trio knew they had to launch their sophomore album with a really big single.  They’re latest #1 hit “Better Dig Two” definitely fits that bill.  The Band Perry debuted the song on last November’s CMA Awards and immediately after the performance their fans started downloading the song in droves.

The group hit a few CMA after-parties following the show, and lead singer Kimberly Perry says, “We were watching the charts and you could just see ‘Better Dig Two’ climbing, climbing, climbing, and then finally hit Number One on iTunes before we went to bed.”

Kimberly’s brother and band mate Neil Perry kept track of “Better Dig Two” trending on Twitter that same night.  He says, “That was pretty cool seeing how people were taking the song instantly and really relating to it.”

Now that “Better Dig Two” has hit #1 at country radio, Kimberly, Neil and their brother Reid Perry are excited to launch the full-length sophomore album, Pioneer, on April 2.

“It was absolutely kind of a validating thing to say ‘Alright here we go, this is off and running,'” Kimberly says of their latest success, “and we can’t just wait for you guys to hear the rest of the record.”

The second single from, Pioneer, is called “DONE.,” and it hit the airwaves Monday.

KHAZ Country Music News: Jason Aldean Says It’s the “Duty” of Younger Stars to Support the Country Music Hall of Fame

khaz jason aldean 20121112Jason Aldean was one of several artists bringing country music to New York City Tuesday night, at an “All for the Hall” concert benefiting the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. And Jason says he thinks supporting the Hall of Fame is an important responsibility for every country artist on the charts today.

“I think it’s almost your duty as a country music artist to educate people on the background of country music and why we’re here,” Jason told ABC News Radio at the event at the Best Buy Theater in New York’s Times Square.  “The people that are enshrined in that building are the ones that kinda paved the way for us to be here, and get to do what we do right now.”

He added, “I think it’s important for us as artists that are out right now to make sure the people don’t forget that.”  Jason will also perform at a similar event in Nashville April 16, along with Eric Church, Tim McGraw, Brantley Gilbert and Willie Nelson, among others.

Asked to name the coolest piece of memorabilia he’s ever seen at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, Jason laughed, “My outfit! That was the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. Are you kidding me? Something of mine in there? That was awesome!”

Also on the bill were Vince Gill, president of the Museum board, who created the All for the Hall fundraising campaign; plus Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell, Ashley Monroe of Pistol Annies, Train lead singer Pat Monahan, and Allman Brothers Band legends Gregg Allman and Warren Haynes.

Vince told ABC News Radio that he was pleased to have put together an eclectic lineup for the night.  “Any time you get a chance to make new friends, that’s so healthy,” he said. “People that you may not know their music.  I’ve not met Pat [Monahan], and I love his voice and so I get a chance to hang out with him.”  Vince noted that Rodney and Emmylou are, of course, “lifelong friends,” while he’s known Ashley “since she was 15 years old.”  As for Jason, Vince called him, “the hottest thing going in country music.”

But Vince told ABC News Radio he was most excited about the prospect of jamming with the legendary Gregg Allman. “To get to hear Gregg Allman sing in person is the best of all,” he said “You know, I was that kid in my room listening to the Allman Brothers records and learning how to play guitar and trying to emulate what I was hearing as a kid, so it’s a big deal for me.”

KHAZ Country Music News: Kenny Chesney Is Top Country Music Money Maker According to “Billboard”

khaz kenny chesney 20130226Billboard magazine has released their list of Music’s Top 40 Money Makers of 2013, and quite a few country artists made the cut. Kenny Chesney ranked highest among country stars at #5 thanks to an estimated $19 million payday thanks in large part to his Brothers of the Sun tour with Tim McGraw, who ranked 7th with an estimated $18 million coming in.

Jason Alden also made the top 10, coming in at #8 with $17.6 million from touring and music sales. Lady Antebellum‘s Own the Night World Tour helped them pocket an estimated $13 million for the 12th spot, while Brad Paisley took in $12.85 million for a #14 ranking. Taylor Swift was 15th with $12.7 million, but that number will be much higher next year once revenue from her upcoming Red tour is factored in.

Carrie Underwood ranked 16th with just under $12 million. Eric Church was 18th with $11 million coming in, and Rascal Flatts came in at #19 with a $10.8 million payday. Toby Keith took 23rd with $9.8 million, and Miranda Lambert‘s $8.8 million haul put her at #27. Zac Brown Band earned an estimated $6.7 million, and Blake Shelton was 40th with more than $5.9 million.

There are a few factors to note with these numbers. Billboard‘s rankings are calculated using estimated artist earnings based on touring stats, album and single sales and streaming data. The rankings don’t include money from sponsorship or merchandise deals due to lack of substantial data.

Madonna topped the list with $34.6 million from her blockbuster MDNA tour.

KHAZ Country Music News: George Strait Receiving Big Honor in Nashville Tonight; Going for 60th #1 Hit of His Career

khaz george strait 20121210George Strait adds another big honor to his trophy case Tuesday night. King George has been selected to receive the Career Achievement Award at the Country Radio Hall of Fame ceremony in Nashville.

The honor comes as George’s team has launched the “60 for 60” campaign to help secure the 60th #1 hit of his career while George is still 60-years-old. The song they’re promoting to pull that feat off is “Give It All We Got Tonight,” the lead single from George’s upcoming studio album. The campaign collects all of George’s chart toppers from various country songs charts since he hit the country scene more than 30 years ago to come up with that figure.

You can find out more about Team George’s efforts at SixtyforSixty.com. Carrie Underwood, Dierks Bentley and Blake Shelton are among the stars paying tribute to George in a new YouTube video posted on that site as well.

George is also on the road with his The Cowboy Rides Away tour, which will be the last major tour of his career. That doesn’t mean George is finished making albums though.

“I still really enjoy singing, and that’s really who I am,” says George. “I mean, I love to fish, and I love to do all these other things. But my love has been and still is country music and singing. So, for as long as I can keep doing it, that’s what I’m gonna do.”

After he receives the honor from the Country Radio Broadcasters, George is set to take the stage Friday night in Knoxville, TN.

KHAZ Country Music News: The Band Perry Loves Playing Venues Both Small and Large

khaz band perry 20120301The Band Perry continues their opening spot on Rascal Flatts‘ Changed tour through next month, and then they’ll embark on a string of headlining and festival dates in the summer.  Touring with the Flatts gives them the opportunity to play for arenas full of fans, but their headlining shows allow the Perry siblings to really connect with the audience in a bigger way.

Reid Perry says, “When we play our own shows, we do have about 15 minutes where it’s just the three of us up on stage playing acoustically.”

Playing smaller venues also allows The Band Perry to have more interaction with the audience, but there is something to be said for playing big rooms with the Flatts too.

Neil Perry says of playing those arenas, “You can have all the frills of the lights and the fog and stuff like that.”

No matter what size their audience, the Perrys always try to get back to their musical roots at every show. While they draw on their love of Queen and Michael Jackson on stage, the sibling trio’s concerts are firmly rooted in their love of country music, which they got from their mother.

“Loretta Lynn is like her hero,” says lead singer Kimberly Perry.  “So, I think we try to mix in all of those elements to our live show.”

Look for The Band Perry to bring their live act to television as they promote their new, sophomore album, Pioneer, due out April 2.  The project features their latest hit, “Better Dig Two.”

Pioneer Track Listing:
“Better Dig Two”
“Done”
“Don’t Let Me Be Lonely”
“Pioneer”
“Forever Mine Nevermind”
“Night Gone Wasted”
“I Saw a Light”
“Mother Like Mine”
“Chainsaw”
“I’m a Keeper”
“Back to Me Without You”
“End of Time”
