KHAZ Country Music News: Zac Brown Band Never Has to Worry About Getting Bored on Stage

khaz zac brown band 20120626Though they’ve scored hit after hit at country radio, the guys in Zac Brown Band reserve the right to cover whatever musical ground interests them while in the studio and on stage.  That means the group members, like the group’s guitar and keyboard player Coy Bowles, are constantly open to listening and learning different styles of music.

Coy comes from a more R&B and blues background, which compliments the bluegrass and folk-oriented history of front man Zac Brown.  That willingness to cover so much musical ground keeps things interesting for the band members.

Coy tells the Kansas City Star, “I’m really thankful.  I don’t know anyone personally who is burned out on music but I imagine playing one style of music all the time could get old after a while.  But for us, one song is rocking, one song is jammy, one song is bluegrass, one song is reggae.  It keeps you on our toes.”

To find out where they’re playing next, head over to ZacBrownBand.com.

KHAZ Country Music News: Thompson Square’s Romance Amplified on Stage

khaz thompson square 20130218A big secret to Thompson Square‘s success is the chemistry between the duo’s Keifer and Shawna Thompson. Of course, the married couple is deeply in love, but that romance is amplified on stage.

Keifer tells CMT.com, “I mean, every night when you get in front of 10,000 to 15,000 people, you’re so amped up and juiced, it’s fun.  It’s just a lot of fun.  We’re just us being ourselves onstage. ”

Shawna adds, “We’re happiest when we’re onstage together.”

Fans have plenty of chances to see Thompson Square’s romance in action on Luke Bryan‘s Dirt Road Diaries tour this year. Thompson Square’s sophomore album, Just Feels Good, is due out March 26 featuring their latest single, “If I Didn’t Have You.”

KHAZ Country Music News: Little Big Town’s Kimberly Schlapman Found Love in a Seemingly Hopeless Place

khaz kimberly schlapman 20121217Kimberly Schlapman of Little Big Town definitely wasn’t looking for love when she started having feelings for her husband Stephen Schlapman. The two had known one another as friends for several years when Kimbelry’s first husband, Steven Roads, suddenly died of a heart attack in 2005.  Like a lot of her friends, Stephen Schlapman would check in on Kimberly regularly to see how she was doing after her husband’s death.

Kimberly tells TheBoot.com, “We had known each other for about six years and he started calling me just like everybody else did.  But he started calling me more than everybody else did.”

Stephen willingly listened to Kimberly as she talked about her late husband, and he identified with her grief since he’d lost a close friend around the same time.  When Kimberly started developing feelings for her friend, it came as quite a surprise.

“I remember when I first realized that I was having feelings, I just thought, ‘OK, this is so weird.  What is this?  I haven’t felt this in a long, long, time,'” Kimberly explains.  “But eventually I allowed myself and it’s been the most beautiful gift of my life.  It pulled me out of the deepest hole that I’ve ever been in and healed me.”

Kimberly and Stephen tied the knot in 2006 and are the parents of 5-year-old Daisy Pearl.

KHAZ Country Music News: Mindy McCready Dead in Apparent Suicide

khaz mindy mccready 20130218Troubled country singer Mindy McCready has died, apparently by her own hand. According to the Cleburne County Sheriff’s department, McCready’s body was found Sunday in Heber Springs, Arkansas.  The 37-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene from what appeared to be a single self-inflicted gunshot wound.

About a month ago, McCready’s boyfriend, 34-year-old David Wilson, died, reportedly of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, though his death is still under investigation.  McCready denied any involvement in Wilson’s death.  Not long afterwards, her two sons, Zander and Zayne, were taken into care by authorities, and E! Online reports that she was ordered to enter a facility for a mental health and alcohol abuse evaluation.

E! reports that according to court documents, a judge wrote that there was cause to believe the singer was suicidal; however, a few days later, she received the OK to undergo outpatient treatment instead.

Wilson was the father of McCready’s younger son, Zayne.  In November of 2011, McCready violated a court order when she didn’t bring her older son, Zander, whose father is McCready’s ex, Billy McKnight, back home to Florida after a visit.  Zander was then placed in foster care while the custody dispute was worked out.  It was just the latest in a long line of personal and legal troubles that McCready had faced in the past decade.

McCready had reportedly attempted suicide in the past, most recently in 2008, the same year it was revealed that she’d had a decade-long relationship with baseball star Roger Clemens, who was married to another woman at the time.

McCready first rose to fame in 1996 with her debut album Ten Thousand Angels, which produced the #1 hit “Guys Do It All the Time.”  She released five albums in all, and scored six top 40 country hits, including “Ten Thousand Angels” and “A Girl’s Gotta Do (What a Girl’s Gotta Do).”  Her most recent album, I’m Still Here, came out in 2010.

Country stars began tweeting in remembrance of McCready Sunday night:

Carrie Underwood: “I grew up listening to Mindy McCready…so sad for her family tonight. Many prayers are going out to them…”

Lady Antebellum‘s Hillary Scott: “My heart is breaking hearing of the loss of Mindy McCready. Pray for her 2 precious little boys…may God’s peace & protection be on them!”

Dixie ChicksNatalie Maines: “Too much tragedy to overcome. R.I.P Mindy McCready.”

Jerrod Niemann: “Hate hearing about anyone committing suicide. May Mindy McCready rest in peace… #sosad

Wynonna: “Oh my! Mindy. Dear sweet girl. This is so sad. It just breaks my heart what addiction continues to take from this life. Addiction is a dis EASE & not a character flaw. When the pain becomes too much, it causes people to want that pain to stop. This is just so Unbelievable & so sad. God be with the family & those babies. Surround them with your grace & mercy. Sleep in Heavenly peace Mindy.”

KHAZ Country Music News: Kip Moore to Appear on ABC’s “Nashville” February 27

khaz kip moore 20120525Kip Moore is set to play himself on ABC’s Nashville February 27.  He’ll join Vince Gill, Pam Tillis and Dan Auerbach of the rock group The Black Keys in that episode in a scene involving the character Deacon’s birthday celebration.

Kip is a fan of Nashville and catches it whenever he can.  Though he thinks the show portrays the country music industry in a pretty good light, Kip says, “It’s TV.  You gotta put the drama in there, and you gotta do stuff entertaining for people.”

You won’t find Kip throwing tantrums or quitting tours like the country stars on Nashville though.  He adds, “I don’t think that everybody believes that’s exactly how Nashville is.  Tell people to lighten up a little bit, you know.”

Brantley Gilbert and Chris Young have also appeared on Nashville in the past few weeks. Nashville airs Wednesday nights at 10 Eastern time on ABC.
