Alcohol, narcotics enforcement training to be held on FHSU campus

More than 40 police officers from across Kansas will meet at Fort Hays State University campus for a day of training beginning at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in the conference room of the Tiger Den in Custer Hall.

The training session is sponsored by the Kansas Association of Chiefs of Police and the FHSU Police Department.

Topics will include liquor enforcement and updates and fake IDs, presented by Agent Michael Eells and Agent Scott Bisk of the Kansas Alcoholic Beverage Control Division of the Kansas Department of Revenue. The Ellis County Drug Enforcement Unit will also share presentations about basic narcotic investigations, drug recognition and trends, and the K-9 Deployment Unit.

Lunch will be provided for officers along with presentations by Mike Baker, president of the KACP, and Doyle King, executive director of the KACP.

Battle of the Badges winner will be announced Saturday

The 2013 Battle of the Badges winner will be announced at halftime of Saturday’s Fort Hays State University men’s basketball game, scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

According to the American Red Cross, just a few votes separated first and second place of the annual contest, which raises awareness of the importance of donating blood.

The presentation will be part of First Responders Appreciation Day, sponsored by Equity Bank.

“We thank Equity Bank for partnering with us as we show our appreciation to our first responders for protecting our community,” said FHSU Assistant Athletic Director Tim Callahan. “We hope this event will be well attended by our local civic organizations and is something we can continue to do in conjunction with FHSU basketball.”

Local police, fire and EMS personnel can receive two free tickets to the games, which begin at 2 and 4 p.m. Saturday.

Junction woman gets probation in Omaha prostitution case

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A Kansas woman has been given five years of probation in an Omaha prostitution case.

Omaha television station KETV said Tabatha Ashburn, Junction City, had made a plea deal with prosecutors who had indicted Ashburn and four other people.

Christopher Tierney also was given probation. The station says Ashburn’s mother, Tammy Schuck, Omaha, is serving prison time, as are William Knox and Kim Bivens.

Authorities say Schuck operated three “spas” in Omaha from April 2008 to January 2012 where customers paid for sex acts from workers, rather than receiving legitimate spa services.

Interstate 70 accidents send several to hospital

The Kansas Highway Patrol responded to three accidents Saturday in Sherman County.

At 2:48 p.m. Saturday, a 1999 Jeep Cherokee driven by Jacob B. Gardner, 36, Bloomington, Ind., was westbound on Interstate 70 10 miles west of Goodland in the passing lane when the vehicle hit a patch of ice and went into the median. The Jeep rolled once and came to rest on its wheels.

Gardner and a passenger, Sarah S. Freeman, 22, Bloomington, were transported to Goodland Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries.

Gardner was wearing a seat belt, while Freeman was unrestrained, the KHP said.

At 5:31 p.m. Saturday, a 2006 Toyota 4Runner, driven by Godoy Aldaberto Mendoza, 61, Burbank, Calif., was westbound on I-70 5 miles west of Goodland in the passing lane when it struck an unoccupied parked tow truck in the median. The tow truck had emergency lights on.

Mendoza was transported to Goodland Regional Medical Center, along with passengers Blancha Mendoza, 50; Maria Mendoza, 17, and Ashley Mendoza, 11. All were wearing safety belts, the KHP reported.

At 5:16 p.m. Saturday, a 2002 Jeep SUV was westbound on I-70 5 miles west of Goodland when it struck an icy patch and rolled, coming to rest on the driver’s side.

The driver, Elyse N. Green, 18, Columbus, Ohio, was transported to Goodland Regional Medical Center for treatment of possible injuries. She was wearing a safety belt.

Truck driver hospitalized after rollover

ATWOOD — A Texas man was hospitalized after rolling a semi in Rawlins County at 2:37 p.m. Thursday.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Brenner Tank rig driven by Robert L. Harper, 60, Pasadena, Texas, was eastbound on Rawlins County Road AA following another truck, which stopped short of the intersection to allow a third vehicle to turn west from Rawlins County Road 10.

Harper was unable to stop his truck, which entered the ditch and rolled onto its passenger side.

He was transported to Rawlins County Health Center for treatment of possible injuries.

The KHP reported he was wearing a safety belt.

One-vehicle accident on icy I-70 sends three to HaysMed

Kansas Highway PatrolIcy road conditions led to a one vehicle accident on Interstate 70 that sent three to the hospital.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the accident happened approximately 2 p.m. Wednesday. The driver, Rhyan Dawn Hand, 17, Pueblo, Colo., was westbound on I-70 approximately 1 mile west of Ellis when she lost control on the icy road. The car fish-tailed, struck a guardrail and entered the north ditch.

Hand was not injured in the accident. The other three occupants in the vehicle, Nizhoni A Rapar, 15; Etsitty A Rapar, 5; and Inikki Annalayne Begay, 20, all of Pueblo, were transported to Hays Medical Center with possible injuries. All four were wearing seat belts, the KHP reported.
