Dealerships ordered to stop donating vehicles to KU coaches

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – The state has ordered car dealers to stop donating vehicles with dealers plates to coaches and other employees at the University of Kansas athletic department.

The Kansas Department of Revenue notified five dealerships across the state to no longer use dealer plates on donated vehicles.

The department says the practice violated a state law that allows owners and sales people at car dealerships to display the plates on vehicles they drive.

But the law does not allow people outside the dealership to use the plates because counties do not receive registration fees or property taxes on cars carrying the dealership tag.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports that the department did not estimate how many cars were improperly tagged, or for how long. The dealerships will not be fined.
