Lightning Awareness Week

This is lightning awareness week, and the National Weather Service is trying to get its message out with a simple phrase, “When thunder roars, go indoors.”

Lightning is one of the deadliest weather phenomena. An average of 55 people are killed each year in the U.S. by lightning strikes and hundreds are permanently injured. There have been six deaths so far this year.

Some lightning safety tips from the NWS include getting to a safe place and avoiding electrical equipment, water or anything else that can conduct electricity. Stay in a safe shelter for at least 30 minutes after you hear the last clap of thunder.
