After giving up 22 runs and not seeing a starting pitcher make it past four innings against Liberal over the weekend, the Hays Larks were in need of a strong pitching performance last night against Dodge City and they got just that Tuesday night from Bradley’s Justin Ziegler.
The right-hander, who was making his first start of the season, threw a a no-hitter through six before allowing a leadoff single in the seventh. Ziegler allowed just the one hit over seven innings and nearly matched his season strikeout total with nine in the Larks 5-0 victory.
The Larks scored a run in the first, two in the third then single runs in the sixth and seventh. Shortstop Elvin Rodriguez had three hits and drove in a run. Aaron Cornell homered in the first as the Larks improve to 14-7 and 8-6 in the Jayhawk League.
Kirk Jewasko is scheduled to start Wednesday night for the Larks as they make a return trip to Dodge City.
