Mike Aviles dropped down a sacrifice bunt in the top of the 14th inning to knock in the winning run, sending the Kansas City Royals past the Boston Red Sox 3-1 in the opening game of their four-game series at Fenway Park.

Alcides Escobar lofted a sacrifice fly to center to score an insurance run for the Royals who have won five of their last six.

Louis Coleman (1-2) worked two innings in relief to earn his first career win while Joakim Soria worked around a leadoff double to earn his 18th save of the season and 150th of his career.

Eric Hosmer went 3-for-5 with a double and scored the go-ahead run, while Melky Cabrera collected four hits.

The teams played nearly 4 1/2 hours after rain delayed the start of the game for 2 hours and 21 minutes. It didn’t end until close to 2am in Boston.

Danny Duffy makes the start Tuesday for the Royals with pre-game at 5:35pm on KAYS.
