Hunters may be disappointed on the opening day of game bird season in sections of Kansas this weekend.
The Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism says there will be a substantial decline in the pheasant population this year, and a general decline in quail populations.
The Salina Journal reports that drought and hail this year have contributed to the lower numbers. The best pheasant hunting in Kansas could be north of Interstate 70 and west of U.S. 81.
The poor numbers could also mean less money for Kansas businesses that cater to hunters, who spend about $150 a day on lodging, food, fuel and hunting supplies. Opening weekend typically draws 50,000 to 70,000 hunters.
The season opens Saturday and runs through Jan. 31.
