Winter Driving Tips–You’re Gonna Need ‘Em Sooner or Later

The recent and rapid temperature changes, all too common in Kansas, remind drivers to plan ahead. One day it’s 60 degrees and sunny; the next day it’s 30 degrees and snowing.

Be prepared, encourages Ellis County Sheriff Ed Harbin. Make sure your vehicle is properly maintained,  and just in case of a  breakdown, Harbin advises keeping a “winter-ready” kit in your car.

The kit should include a change of clothes, boots, a shovel, drinking water, high-calorie candy bars or canned nuts, and also have your cell phone on hand.

If your vehicle becomes stuck in the snow, make sure the  exhaust system has clearance around the tailpipe so carbon monoxide is not drawn inside.

Harbin also suggests  keeping at least a half-tank of gasoline in your car during the winter season.
