The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee has approved the 21st Century Postal Service Act with an amendment authored by Senator Jerry Moran. The amendment requires standards of service to be developed, and then the potential closure of post offices to be measured against those standards.
The amendment also requires the US Postal Service to consider alternatives prior to closing any post offices.
The bill includes cost-saving proposals such as creating a fund to pay the buyout for early retirement to dramatically reduce the postal service workforce.
