In a news release, the restaurant chain, Spangles, came forward to verify that they were the ones behind the idea of having a helicopter drop money over the city of Wichita. Below is their news release.

OK OK…Yes it was us!

After many phone calls we admit…it was Spangles.

Money dropping from the sky…”yes you could say we were out of our mind.” We Thought it would be a fun, different event…right?…so we thought. It started out as a simple idea and a phone call to the Mayor to see if it could even be done. We asked the Mayor if we could remain anonymous as we were still working on the details of the event.

It was a fun idea and a way to say, “thank you” to the community for supporting a local business throughout the year and bring about thousands of smiles.” We wanted to provide an exciting event to give money to a lot of people with the drop from the helicopter before Christmas.

However due to unforeseen safety issues we have decided not to drop the money from the helicopter.

There were many comments posted on the media’s websites stating that the funds should go to local charities. We agree that all of these organizations need support. Because we cannot do the helicopter drop we will redirect the dollars to several charities. Spangles has always and will always support local organizations such as schools, churches and not-for-profit in our communities.

Well it was fun thinking about it…I actually caught myself looking up to the sky wondering what it would be like to see money falling down; but probably not such a safe idea after all.
