Woman Sentenced To 5 Years For Burning, Suffocating Toddler In Kansas

A Topeka woman was sentenced to nearly five years in prison for the death of her boyfriend’s 20-month-old daughter.

The Shawnee County District Attorney’s office said Thursday that 21-year-old Johana Iveth Villegas-Gonzales was sentenced to 59 months in prison for the death of Mireya Carmen Ortiz Rodriguez.

Prosecutors say the child was intentionally burned on the bottom of her feet before apparently being suffocated on Aug. 12.

Villegas-Gonzales, who had been charged with second-degree murder, pleaded no contest in December to voluntary manslaughter and child abuse.
