The Parent Shop: Because Kids Don’t Come With Instructions

Kids don’t come with instructions.

Parenting help is now just a phone call away–785.639.1980.  “The Parent Shop” has recently organized to offer a guide to parents about the variety of free early childhood services available in Hays and the surrounding area.  A website is also available:  www.haysparents.com.

The project is funded by a grant from the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund.  Local grant coordinator Dana Stanton says the Hays Interagency Coordinating Council (HICC) has worked for many years to develop a network of free services for families of young children, from birth to age 5.  “The Parenting Shop” is a centralized source for parents to access the services information in one place.

The services include child care, early childhood education and preschools, expecting and new parent services, health and safety, parent education, parent support groups, developmental screenings and social and emotional health.

Peyton Manning Chooses Denver Broncos

ESPN is reporting that Peyton Manning is negotiating to join the Denver Broncos. Citing anonymous sources Monday, ESPN said that the four-time MVP has instructed agent Tom Condon to negotiate to complete a deal with Denver. Manning became a free agent when the Indianapolis Colts released him March 7 after the quarterback missed all of last season because of multiple neck surgeries.

The addition of Manning could well lead to the trade of Tim Tebow, who energized the Broncos in leading them to the playoffs last season despite his uneven play.

The San Francisco 49ers and the Tennessee Titans have been the other teams considered finalists in the race to sign Manning.

Kansas Receiving $4.4 Million To Turn Around Underachieving Schools

Kansas is receiving a $4.4 million federal grant to continue efforts to turn around its persistently lowest-achieving schools.

The Kansas State Department of Education says the money will benefit seven schools in the Wichita, Kansas City, Kan., Topeka, Cherokee and Liberal school districts.

The schools have received funding previously from the U.S. Department of Education program, which requires districts to choose an aggressive turnaround model. One option is replacing the principal and improving the school through comprehensive reforms.

Kansas Custodian Called A Hero For Saving Man’s Life

An eastern Kansas sheriff is calling a high school janitor a hero for pulling an elderly man from a burning car that had backed into a ditch.

Denny Gray and his wife, Lori, were headed home from the store earlier this month when he saw what he thought was a brush fire on the side of the road.

The St. Joseph News-Press reports that Gray, a custodian at Hiawatha High School, instead discovered it was a car that was on fire.

Gray ran to the vehicle and found 94-year-old Gerry Alkire of Hiawatha trapped inside. He pulled Alkire, who suffered only minor burns, to safety as tires started blowing out from the heat.

Brown County Sheriff John Merchant said Gray was a hero for risking his life to save another’s.

Salina Military School Has History Of Abuse Claims

Court documents show a Kansas military school accused of fostering a culture of abuse has been repeatedly sued by parents.

St. John’s Military School is due in federal court Tuesday. The Salina school is seeking a gag order prohibiting people involved in the case from publicly talking about the current litigation or past lawsuits that ended in settlements.

But evidence in the public record allege long-running abuses. Nine other abuse-related lawsuits have been filed since 2006.

One lawsuit included photos of a student who had been branded on his arm with a hot, star-shaped medal. A school official acknowledged in a deposition that at least 10 other students were similarly branded.

A cadet testified how higher ranking students would swat young cadets on their bare bottoms with ceremonial sabers.

Alahmadi and two passengers in the car, 20-year-old Sunayn Mullick and 2o-year-old Mygabi A. Byenkya also of Lawrence, were taken to Ellsworth Medical Center. Their conditions have not been released.

Sunday Night Storms Produce Tornadoes In Nebraska

by Dan Lucero – North Platte Post

There were reports of five funnel tornadoes touching down in Lincoln County late Sunday night, including one large tornado south of North Platte that caused damage to at least two houses. The National Weather Service has confirmed that at least two tornadoes did touch down.

Power outages and multiple reports of down power lines are being reported throughout the county.

A tornado warning went into effect for central Lincoln County just after 9 PM on Sunday. Tornadoes were spotted around North Platte within the next hour, including west of town, and south near Lake Maloney. One tornado was spotted by a spotter and by law enforcement near Buffalo Rd. and North River Rd. in North Platte. There are confirmed reports of damage to homes and vehicles.

Mark Boyle of KCTV in Kansas City, MO reported late Sunday that two people were hospitalized. This report has been confirmed by a local source.

There are also reports of damage to Bailey Yard, with a reported fifteen train cars being overturned by the storms.

The attached image was tweeted by multiple sources. It is of a tornado and power flash west of North Platte.

At 11:40 PM, Severe Studios posted to it’s Twitter account: “Preliminary survey from North Platte: 3 homes heavy damage, several power poles snapped, 1 injury. Bailey Yards area.” This contradicts earlier reports that two were injured.

Volunteers are opening a shelter at the North Platte Rec Center for those affected by the storms.

We will continue to update information as it becomes available.

Eastern Colorado Wildfires Force Evacuations

Authorities say residents of between 200 and 300 homes have been asked to evacuate in northeastern Colorado’s rural Yuma County due to several wildfires burning in the area.

Reverse notifications have gone out to the residents, and those who were displaced are being asked to go to the community center in Yuma.

Day says several homes have been touched by the fires, but he isn’t sure how much damage has been caused or how much land has been scorched. He asks that residents stay off the roads because of heavy smoke blowing through the area.

Yuma County borders Kansas and Nebraska.

Kansas Rallies Past Purdue, Advances To Sweet 16

(Getty Images)

OMAHA, Neb. — Elijah Johnson scored 18 points, including the go-ahead basket in the final minute, and No. 2 seed Kansas rallied to beat Robbie Hummel and No. 10 seed Purdue 63-60 on Sunday night.

Thomas Robinson managed 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Jayhawks (29-6), who trailed nearly the entire game but still managed to advance to St. Louis. They’ll play No. 11 seed North Carolina State in the Midwest Regional semifinals.

Purdue was clinging to a 60-59 lead and had the ball and under a minute remaining when Lewis Jackson, the shot clock winding down, lost control at the top of the key. Johnson picked it up and went the other way for the go-ahead layup with 23.3 seconds left.

Hummel missed an open 3-pointer at the other end and Tyshawn Taylor scored a transition dunk for Kansas with 2.5 seconds left. After a timeout, Purdue sharpshooter Ryne Smith unloaded a long potential tying 3-point try that hit the backboard and the rim before falling away.

Hummel finished with 26 points to lead the Boilermakers (22-13).
