Garden Mulch Fire Spreads to House Exterior

A fire just after 5p.m. Wednesday in Hays was likely caused by a tossed cigarette.

Hays firefighters, police and Ellis County EMS responded to a building fire report at 19th and Oak Streets at 5:07p.m.

According to Fire Chief Gary Brown, a fire was burning in the garden mulch next to the house at 116 East 19th Street and then spread to the house exterior.

Firefighters used a fire extinguisher to quickly control the fire and one hose line was used to completely put it out.  The home’s interior was not damaged.

Brown says the most probable cause of the fire was discarded smoking materials in the dry mulch. “Fortunately a neighbor spotted the smoke and promptly called 9-1-1.”

This is the third outside fire that has spread to a building in Hays this year. Brown urges residents to carefully dispose of smoking materials and to have working home smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

Western Kansas Man Clears First American Idol Hurdle

Just one person made it to the next round of auditions after the American Idol team heard 600 area singers in Dodge City’s Wright Park August 24.

David Fisher of Cimarron has been singing his whole life–high school musicals, Kansas Music Educators Association competitions, classes at Dodge City Community College, appearances with the Dodge City Depot Theater Company and at Boot Hill.

After singing the Vince Gill song, “Go Rest High on That Mountain,” Fisher was asked to sing a second song, which he took to be a good sign. He sang “Your Man,” by Josh Turner as a film crew recorded video and still shots.

Fisher was then called forward and told the good news. “They said they liked my voice and that I should work on my performance,” Fisher said. Then he was sent to sign forms and paperwork.

As he waits to hear more from American Idol, Fisher continues to work on his family’s ranch near Cimarron.

Two kids, Two Drivers Die In Southern Nebraska Bus-Truck Crash

A school bus and a tractor-trailer collided in southern Nebraska killing two children and two drivers, and injuring at least four more youngsters.

Officials say the truck caught fire in the crash south of Blue Hill around 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The bus was carrying students from the Blue Hill Community School District. At least four, aged 6 to 10 years, were taken to a hospital 20 miles north in Hastings. One was transferred to Children’s Hospital & Medical Center in Omaha. The school district superintendent didn’t return early calls Thursday from The Associated Press.

Nebraska State Patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins said the truck was hauling hay but had no details about the accident or the injured children. She referred other questions to the Webster County attorney, who didn’t immediately respond.

Sewer Cleaning Project to Begin Next Week

Beginning next week, some Hays residents may find bright pink notices on their homes. The city is contracting a sewer cleaning project, and the door notices will include information about the process and tips to avoid water damage.

Utilities Superintendent Bernie Kitten says the city is trying to get into a regular routine of sewer cleaning to make the system run better.

This work will focus on two small portions of town, north of 33rd from Willow to Skyline and around 8th Street from Elm to Main. Property owners will be notified prior to work beginning.

Salina Military School Seeks Dismissal of Lawsuit

A Kansas military school is again asking a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit by families of 11 former cadets alleging physical abuse.

Lawyers for St. John’s Military School in Salina filed a motion Wednesday seeking dismissal of the lawsuit or an order putting the dispute into arbitration.

The move is largely procedural since U.S. District Judge John Lungstrum denied a similar motion in June. The school says it renewed the request because four new cadets have since been added to the case and it wanted to preserve all legal issues for a potential appeal.

St. John’s has denied allegations that higher-ranking students were encouraged to discipline younger cadets, leading to abuse.
