FHSU Senior Receives Theodore Presser Award

Steven Cornwell, Bison senior, has been awarded the $4,800 Theodore Presser Award for his accomplishments in the Fort Hays State University Department of Music and Theatre.

“The Presser award means that, between it and the rest of my scholarships, I don’t have to worry much about finances for the rest of the school year, which is a huge load off my mind,” said Cornwell. “I am very honored to have received it. My compositions have been performed at a number of FHSU concerts.”

Cornwell is a music and theory composition major and plans to go to graduate school. During his career at FHSU, he has composed three pieces for the Spectrum Concert, two pieces for the small ensembles concert, one for the High Plains Barbershop Chorus and rearranged Thomas More Prep-Marian High School’s fight song.

“After graduation I plan to take a year off school to prepare my composition portfolio for graduate school,” said Cornwell. “My dad always said that I should spend some time working at a fast food restaurant in order to convince myself that I don’t want to work in a fast food restaurant for the rest of my life. I am thinking a year off might give me that chance.”

Cornwell has been a part of marching band, symphonic winds, wind ensemble, concert choir, Fort Hays Singers, clarinet choir, double-reed ensemble, opera, musicals and Hays Symphony Orchestra. He is also involved in the National Association for Music Education.

“The Presser award is given to students who exemplify the best artistic, scholastic and professional standards in the Department of Music and Theatre,” said Ben Cline, chair of the department. “Cornwell has earned the achievement of being a Presser Scholar through his hard work and dedication.”

The Presser Foundation’s mission is to provide scholarships to promising undergraduate and graduate music education majors, encourage the study of music and aid musical programs.

The Department of Music and Theatre applies for a grant from The Presser Foundation every five years. An award from the grant is given to one junior or senior every year.

Panel OKs Raises For Kansas Public Employees

A committee overseeing state employee pay is recommending about $11.4 million in raises for underpaid state workers, with corrections officers at Kansas prisons among the groups benefiting most.

The Joint Committee on Employee Pay Plan Oversight on Tuesday recommended 7.5 percent raises for more than a thousand corrections officers. The funds were appropriated during the 2012 legislative session.

Corrections Secretary Ray Roberts told the committee that the increases would bring officers who haven’t had a pay raise since 2009 closer to the market rate.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reported the pay raises are part of a state program to raise the pay of certain state employees closer to similar private sector employees.

The pay increases range from 5 percent to 12.5 percent and will go to 4,296 state employees.

Role of Amateur Radio Operators May Determine Lease Agreement

The importance of amateur radio operators is at the heart of a discussion about whether Ellis County should agree to lease space on a communications tower for an amateur radio antenna and related equipment. Sheriff Ed Harbin says in times of disaster, they can be invaluable.

Harbin says the state wants Ellis County to organize a group of volunteers dedicated to assisting the local government when needed.

The county commission wants an opinion on the lease agreement from the county counselor before approving it.

Ellis County Considers Water Options

With the lack of rain, Ellis County crews have had to haul water all over the county to try to maintain the roads. One option the county is beginning to explore is to dig a few Dakota wells in various locations to provide supply and cut down on hauling distances.

Public Works Director Mike Graf says he has discussed the possibility with the state and the permitting requirements.

The county wants to test the water to see if its chemical makeup would be conducive to treating roads. The cost of a well and holding tank could be around $20,000.
