Police Investigating Abuse Of Turkey At KU Frat

Lawrence police are investigating reports that members of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity at the University of Kansas abused and killed a turkey at a party.

Police said Monday they received a report of possible animal cruelty at a party that drew about 150 people Friday night.

The Kansas City Star reports witnesses said the some fraternity members broke the turkey’s cage, chased the animal, choked it and broke its wing and a leg.

Police say they were told a fraternity member killed the bird to end its suffering.

A message left after hours for the Beta Theta Pi Foundation and Administrative Office wasn’t immediately returned.

The university said in a statement that the fraternity’s national chapter and the KU Interfraternity Council also are investigating the complaint.

KHAZ Country Music News: Lee Brice and His Son Takoda Share Love for Monster Truck Parties

Lee Brice‘s son Takoda has a lot of cars and trucks on his Christmas list this year. The young boy even dreams of monster truck parties, which confused Lee at first. He thought Takoda might have been referring to his daddy’s song “Parking Lot Party” at first. Then Lee’s friend who puts on monster truck rallies invited him to one of their events near Nashville.

Lee says, “I jumped straight in my truck. I happened to be home. Went and grabbed him and [my wife] Sara and we drove out to way south of town. Went and saw, sat down and saw those monster trucks. You know, and he was just beside himself.”

Lee and his wife and son got to ride around in the monster trucks too, and Takoda told his parents, “Now, that’s a monster truck party.”

State Prisons Equipped to House Paralyzed Inmates

A 19-year-old Topeka man who was left a paraplegic after an accident that killed a passenger in his car is scheduled to be sentenced to prison this week.

Hunter Hillmer is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday for reckless second-degree murder for a March 19 accident that killed 15-year-old Madison Naill. He also was convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol and aggravated battery for injuries sufferd by a second passenger.

State corrections officials said paralyzed inmates are housed at various facilities, and are kept in the general population.

Corrections department spokesman Jeremy Barclay says the state pays only slightly more to house a paralyzed inmate, mostly to buy necessary equipment.

Barclay said several paralyzed inmates might be transferred to Oswego when it reopens next month.

KHAZ Country Music News: Zac Brown Band Looking to Make Timeless Christmas Album at Some Point

Zac Brown Band‘s rich harmonies and intricate musicianship seem tailor-made for a Christmas album, and frontman Zac Brownhopes to release a holiday collection one day.

He tells ABC News Radio, “I want to make sure that’s something that’s on our plate, and it will be something that will be timeless and kind of live on.”

The group is going out on their own on the record label front next year with plans to release a double acoustic album of new material. Zac would like to see some holiday music included in the 2013 release plans as well.

“What we should is probably just do a couple Christmas tunes each year until we have a full collection to make an album with it,” Zac wonders aloud. “Maybe a couple original ones as well. I don’t want to mail it in.”

For now, Zac is really enjoying Cee Lo Green‘s Christmas album, Cee Lo’s Magic Moment. He downloaded it last week and says, “I’m a big Cee Lo fan of his, you know, musicality.”  Zac adds, “You listen to that Christmas album, and you hear all kinds of old influence on there.”

Zac Brown Band is currently rising up the chart with their latest single, “Goodbye in Her Eyes,” from their latest project Uncaged.

OPTIONS Moves Administrative Offices

Domestic violence and sexual assault service provider, Options, has moved its administrative offices.

The new location,  2716 Plaza Avenue, Hays, is a  building previously owned by Farm Bureau.

According to Options Board President Kenton Olliff, the building has been unoccupied since 2010 and the Farm Bureau Board agreed to reduce the building price.  “With the sale of the previous Options office on East 23rd Street, the use of reserve funds, and a modest loan, Options was able to purchase the building,” says Olliff.

Executive Director Charlotte Linsner says the increased space allows Options to “provide critical services in a more sensitive and professional setting,” as well as increasing the amount of private meeting space and staff work areas.   There is also a dedicated children’s room.

Options serves 18 counties in northwest Kansas with the main office in Hays and an outreach office in Colby.
