KHAZ Country Music News: Alan Jackson’s New Photography Book Benefiting the Colon Cancer Alliance’s Blue Note Fund

Alan Jackson fans will remember his 140-acre spread of land outside Nashville named Sweetbriar. The property featured a massive main residence and breathtaking landscape along the Harpeth River. The Jacksons sold the property in 2010, and Alan and his wife Denisemade a photo journal of the property for their three daughters to remember the 13 years they lived there. They are now selling limited edition copies of that photo book at AlanJackson.com, with the proceeds going to a cause very close to the family’s heart.

Shortly after they moved away from Sweetbriar, Denise was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Though she has now received a clean bill of health, Alan and Denise thought the photo book, titled Seasons of Sweetbriar – A Photographic Collection of Home by Alan Jackson, would be a great way to raise money for colon cancer patients in need. All proceeds from the book will benefit the Colon Cancer Alliance’s Blue Note Fund.

Jamaican Woman Sentenced For Sham Marriage to U.S. Soldier

A Jamaican woman who was convicted of marriage fraud has been sentenced in federal court and now faces deportation proceedings, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said Monday.

U.S. District Judge Monti L. Belot sentenced 28-year-old Shannakay M. Priest to two years of probation. She also was ordered to pay $300 to the federal crime victims fund and $2,600 in restitution to the United States Army for receipt of medical services to which she was not entitled.

In August, a federal jury convicted Priest on one count of conspiracy to commit marriage fraud, one count of marriage fraud and one count of making a false statement to an agent of Homeland Security Investigations. During trial, prosecutors presented evidence that Priest had overstayed her visitor visa when she entered into a sham marriage with co-defendant Joshua Priest, who was a private in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Riley, Kan. The two made the agreement so he could obtain additional benefits to married soldiers, and she could get a green card, regain legal status in the United States and receive military benefits and health care for herself and her two children. The marriage was never consummated and the two never lived together.

Joshua Priest pleaded guilty in the case to marriage and wire fraud. He was sentenced to 10 months in federal prison followed by two years supervised release.

Grissom said Homeland Security Investigations had initiated civil immigration proceedings that are likely to lead to the removal of Shannakay Priest, who resides in Bronx, New York, to her native Jamaica. Shannakay Priest made multiple trips from New York to Fort Riley and Junction City, to make the marriage appear legitimate, Grissom said.

KHAZ Country Music News: Brantley Gilbert Makes a Point to Get to Know His Opening Acts

Brantley Gilbert has graduated to headliner status on the road these days, but that doesn’t mean he’s off in his own little world backstage. Taking cues from the guys he opened for, like Toby Keith and Eric Church, Brantley makes it a priority to really get to know his opening acts on the road.

He tells GAC of his days with Toby and Eric, “The camaraderie that we’ve experienced between crews and bands is something I’ve taken away from both tours.  Just seeing the way that everybody gets along…we’re forming friendships that ride the rest of our careers, probably the rest of our lives.”

Brantley has had Uncle Kracker and Greg Bates on the road with his Hell on Wheels tour so far this year. He’s got some time off before playing a New Year’s Eve show in Independence, MO.

Christmas Gifts

By Tom Wilbur

This may be the shortest op-ed piece you’ll ever read. And maybe the most important.

Do justice.

Express kindness.

Show gratitude.

Live with humility.

Be a person of integrity.

Demonstrate love.

Show God favor.

These are the greatest gifts you can give this Christmas, and every day, for that matter. They aren’t available at a department store. There’s no coupon required, and no layaway plan. They come from inside. Wrap them up with a dose of warmth, compassion, empathy, and enthusiasm, and share them with everyone you meet. Oh yeah, and put a little hug on the end. It will do you no harm.

We can change the world, for the better—you and I.

Hope to see you in church, as we celebrate the real reason for the season.

Blessings,

tw

Med Tech In Hepatitis C Case Pleads Not Guilty

David Kwiatkowski, a traveling medical technician accused of causing a hepatitis C outbreak at over 18 hospitals across the country.

A traveling hospital worker accused of stealing drugs and infecting patients with hepatitis C through contaminated syringes has pleaded not guilty to the charges in New Hampshire federal court.

David Kwiatkowski, whom prosecutors describe as a “serial infector,” was indicted last week on multiple charges of tampering with a consumer product and illegally obtaining drugs.

Kwiatkowski only said “yes” when asked in court Monday if he understood his rights. Trial was set for the first week of February.

Until May, Kwiatkowski worked as a cardiac technologist at Exeter Hospital, where 32 patients were diagnosed with the same strain of hepatitis C he carries. Before that, he worked in 18 hospitals in seven states. Patients in Arizona, Georgia, Kansas (Hays), Maryland, Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania have since been tested for hepatitis C.

KHAZ Country Music News: Reba’s Sitcom “Malibu Country” Embraces Gay Characters in a Big Way

Reba‘s new sitcom, Malibu Country, doesn’t shy away from tackling gay issues. In fact, it features several gay characters, including Jai Rodriguez‘s music industry assistant role. Reba’s daughter on the show has a gay male friend named Sage, with who she sometimes makes out, and a lesbian friend named Lily, who hasn’t been seen on camera yet.

In an interview with The Advocate, Reba was asked if the show would have this much gay-friendly content if it was set in Nashville instead of Los Angeles. She feels the show’s location is irrelevant to that point, saying, “I’ve got a huge gay following, and they’ve always been very supportive, so I wouldn’t be surprised if there weren’t any difference between Nashville and L.A.”

Malibu Country has been picked up for an additional five episodes this season. It airs Friday night at 8:30 ET on ABC.
