Police: 11-Year-Old Avoids Abduction Attempt In Kansas

Lenexa police say a quick-thinking 11-year-old boy escaped an attempted abduction.

Police say the boy was riding his bicycle Sunday afternoon when a white car drove past slowly and turned around. The boy says a passenger in the car pointed a gun at him and told him to get into the car.

Lenexa police officer Dan Friesen says in a news release that the boy knew he couldn’t get into the car under any circumstances. So he ran to a nearby liquor store, and police were called.

The vehicle was a dirty, white four-door passenger car of an unknown make. The man with the gun was white with a dark complexion, with a small amount of facial hair. The boy didn’t get a look at the driver.

No programs will be held and no visiting will be allowed until the lockdown ends.

KHAZ Country Music News: Blake Shelton Shakes It Up With Christmas Special

(AP) – Blake Shelton says it should be obvious from the title of his Christmas special that it’s not a typical Christmas special. It’s called “Blake Shelton’s Not So Family Christmas.” Shelton says it’s not a concert, but it is Shelton being Shelton. He says he pushed his advantage with NBC in asking what he was allowed to do, and to his surprise he got a yes. Shelton believes it’s good for country musicians to try new things and blast the stereotypes about country music. He jokes that some people see country artists on TV and are surprised that they can read. “Blake Shelton’s Not So Family Christmas” airs tonight after “The Voice” on NBC.

KHAZ Country Music News: Shania Twain Brings Her Iconic Videos to Life in New Las Vegas Residency

Shania Twain returned to the stage for the first time in nearly a decade with the opening of her Shania…Still the Oneresidency at Caesars Palace Saturday night in Las Vegas. The high-tech, high-production show opened with Shania riding a motorcycle suspended in air to recreate her “I’m Gonna Getcha Good” video. In fact, the entire Vegas production capitalized on Shania’s iconic videos.

While planning the show with her production team, Shania recalls saying, “‘Let’s bring the videos to life,’ and so that’s what we’re doing, and we’re making them bigger than life, I think.”

That theme continued throughout the show as Shania delivered her biggest hits, ranging from the down-home, saloon-inspired production of “Any Man of Mine” and “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under” to the high-concept interpretations of her “That Don’t Impress Me Much” and “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” clips.

Throughout Saturday night’s opening concert, Shania clearly felt the adoration from the crowd. At one point, she even wiped away tears while worrying aloud that her eyelashes would fall off from too much crying. That performance also marked Shania’s first major concert performance in nearly a decade.

As with any high-stakes opening in Las Vegas, Shania admitted the critics were her biggest concern. Any negativity they might throw her way was clearly offset by the love from her fans though.

“The fans are who I am up there for,” Shania explained in a press event before the show. “I’m there for them, and I feel it. They’re there for the same reason that I’m there. We love the music and we love the entertainment, and so I feel like there’s a really positive exchange there.”

Many of the fans who caught Shania’s Come on Over tour in the late ’90s or her Up! tour a few year later have already bought their tickets for her run of shows in Vegas. The cutting-edge technology available in Caesars Palace’s theater, The Colosseum, allows Shania to put on a show far beyond what she could have taken on the road though. The production elements of the new stage amaze Shania even while she’s performing on it.

Talking about her intense rehearsals with her band and backing dancers, Shania says, “We’re seeing new things all the time happening behind us and around us that I’ve never had, or that I wouldn’t be able to have in a traveling show — a lot of the technology and that sort of thing. It’s just a wonder in itself I think.”

Of course, Shania’s show is based on her stellar run of hits from 1995 through 2002 from the multi-platinum albums she co-wrote with her former husband, super-producer Mutt Lange. Shania admits she never listened to her own albums once she was done recording them, so getting reacquainted with the music for the Vegas show was a bit of a challenge.

Once she began working on the songs for the show, Shania recalling thinking, “Why did I write so many words? What was I thinking? These songs are so wordy! It’s like I’ve tried to fit in so many words. I still have to walk and sing. I had to get reacquainted with pacing myself again.”

Fans attending Shania’s opening night could easily tell she was singing every note live on stage, even while wrangling live horses during two separate numbers. To take in Shania’s show for yourself, check out her concert dates at ShaniainVegas.com.

Midwest Economic Index Rises Slightly

A monthly economic index report suggests an economic slump will continue over the next three to six months for nine Midwest and Plains states.

The Mid-America Business Conditions index rose slightly in November to a weak 48.0 from 46.5 in October. The figure was 50.4 in September.

The survey of business leaders and supply managers uses a collection of indexes ranging from zero to 100. Survey organizers say any score above 50 suggests growth while a score below 50 suggests decline for that factor.

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss oversees the survey, and he says it is tracking “economic weakness, particularly for nondurable-goods producers.”

The survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

The Hays High Boys And Girls Both Win On Saturday

HAYS HIGH 59   KEARNEY 42  (boys)

After a thrilling overtime win to get into the Hays City Shootout championship game, the final game had much less drama as Hays High beat Kearney 59-42.  There were four ties in the first quarter and tied at 11 after the first eight minutes.  The Indians opened the second quarter on a 15-3 run to go up 26-14 and the Indians were never threatened rest of the way.  Hays allowed just four first half field goals, but Kearney made 11 of 13 free throws to stay within eight points at the break.

The Indians allowed only two third quarter free throws and outscored Kearney 12-2.  Hays shot 46% from the field and out rebounded the Bearcats by seven.  Kearney made just nine field goals with five of them coming in the final five minutes of the game.  Kearney went 5-25 behind the arc.

Nick Petz, Lane Clark, and Brady Werth were all named to the all-tournament team.  Lane Clark was also named the Mikey Steinert Most Inspirational Player.

This was Kearney’s last appearance in the Hays City Shootout as the state of Nebraska will be doing all of the basketball scheduling.

HAYS HIGH 37  DESOTO 33  (girls)

Hays moves to 2-1 to start the season.  Their lone loss in the tournament was to Newton, who went on to beat Kearney in the title game.

During the holidays, we are reminded that Christmas is a time of joy, happiness, and generosity; yet there are children in Ellis County who are unable to enjoy the spirit of the season. The goal of the “Christmas for Kids Telethon” this year is $65,000 and we need your help to support and touch the lives of children in Ellis County.

Throughout the year, there is an average of 60-70 children on a waiting list that are in need of companionship, someone to spend one-on-one time with them, someone who is there just for them – to make them feel special. Big Brothers Big Sisters is committed to improving the lives of children in our community, and depend on the generosity of those who understand the importance of taking care of our children. The community opened their hearts last year, making it possible for us to match 106 kids this year with positive role models. A successful telethon will allow us to match each one of the children currently on our waiting list.

Kansas Tax Collections Slightly Exceed Expectations

The state Revenue Department says Kansas collected $2.6 million more in taxes than expected in November.

The agency said Friday that the state collected about $441 million in taxes this month, when a fiscal forecast predicted it would take in less than $439 million.

The difference is less than 1 percent, but Revenue Secretary Nick Jordan said the numbers contain solid signs that the state’s economy is improving.

The report was the first since officials issued a new fiscal forecast earlier this month.

Legislative researchers project a budget shortfall of $328 million by June 2014, although that figure is likely to be recalculated next month.

Kansas enacted massive income tax cuts this year to stimulate the economy. Critics contend the reductions have led to budget problems.
