19th-Ranked Tigers Win One of Three at National Duals

FHSU-WRE-MeansFort Hays State faced three nationally ranked opponents at the NWCA National Duals in Springfield, Ill. on Saturday (Jan. 12) and won one match-up, now at 7-5 overall on the season. The Tigers fell to second-ranked Newberry in the opening round 28-9, but bounced back in the first consolation round to defeat 13th-ranked Augustana 22-10. The Tigers were knocked out of the tournament by eighth-ranked Findlay 26-13, coming one dual short of getting into the placing duals on Sunday.

No. 2 Newberry (S.C.) 28, No. 19 Fort Hays State 9
Newberry College (S.C.) (8-0 overall), ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division II, won six of the first seven matches against FHSU (6-4 overall) to cruise to a 19-point win in the opening round of the NWCA National Duals. Fort Hays State took two of the last three matches by decision, but it was too late with Newberry already leading 22-3 heading into the 184-pound class.

No. 19 Fort Hays State 22, No. 13 Augustana (S.D.) 10
Fort Hays State (7-4 overall) survived the first elimination round of the tournament by knocking 13th-ranked Augustana (S.D.) (4-3 overall) from the tournament. The dual bounced back-and-forth early with Augustana taking three of the first five matches. The Tigers went on a run from that point, winning the final five matches to oust the Vikings.

No. 8 Findlay (Ohio) 26 , No. 19 Fort Hays State 13
Eighth-ranked Findlay jumped out to a 9-0 lead and the Tigers could never catch up as the Oilers knocked Fort Hays State (7-5 overall) from the tournament and a chance to wrestle in the placing duals on Sunday. Bonus points were a key to victory for Findlay (7-2 overall), which took six of the 10 matches.

Fort Hays State hosts Adams State in a non-conference dual on Thursday, January 17 at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays. The dual is set to begin at 7 pm.

Kansas Legislature has Fewest Women Since 1988

Kansas flagThe Kansas Legislature starts its 2013 session with the lowest number of women since 1988.

A survey conducted by Rutgers University says 39 of the state’s 165 lawmakers this session will be female. That ranks Kansas 26th in female representation in the country.

In comparison, the state had 55 female legislators and ranked fifth in the nation.

While their numbers are down, female legislators moved into leadership positions. Sen. Susan Wagle is the state’s first female Senate President and Rep. Peggy Mast was elected House Speaker Pro Tem. And four of the Democrats’ six House minority leadership positions went to women.

Legislative Session Begins Today

Kansas capitolTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Kansas legislators will begin their annual session facing a budget shortfall and a court order to boost spending on public schools.

But many of them want to cut income taxes for the second consecutive year.

Legislators convene Monday afternoon.

Both the House and Senate will have new leaders, conservative Republican majorities and plenty of new faces following last year’s elections.

With GOP moderates ousted from power in the Senate, many lawmakers anticipate reviving a wide variety of measures. They include proposals to reshape the state’s appellate courts and create a 401(k)-style pension plan for new teachers and government workers.

Conservative Republican Governor Sam Brownback plans to outline his agenda in Tuesday evening’s State of the State address. He’ll release details about his budget proposals Wednesday morning.

Tax Credit Could Spark Wind Industry

wind turbineWICHITA, Kan. (AP) – Wind energy in Kansas could be in store for another round of development due to the one-year renewal of a federal tax credit.

Kansas saw the most wind farm construction of any state last year. But by early fall, projects stalled and workers were laid off because the industry was expecting the tax credit to expire on January 1st.

Now Congress has approved a tax credit for the production of wind, solar and other renewable energy at a cost of $12.2 billion.

Industry experts say conditions are ripe for another burst of wind farm construction in Kansas late this year and next. Several new wind energy products are being discussed in central and western Kansas.

Extension Agent: “U-S Food Supply Generally Very Safe”

linda beechAfter a year-long delay, the U-S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released two draft proposals for major regulations of food safety.

That will allow the FDA to shift its focus on preventing, rather than simply reacting, to food-borne illnesses, according to Ellis County K-State Extension FACS Agent, Linda Beech.

“These new major regulations are aimed at those in the food processing chain, rather than consumers,” she explains.  “Areas such as suppliers, manufacturing plants, wholesale dealers, and transportation will be affected.”

In general, says  Beech, the U-S food supply is considered to be very safe.

“But there are things putting at risk the food we consume today which weren’t a concern in past generations.  Now we have huge batches of foods coming into the United States from countries around the world, and there is always the possibility the imports could be mixed and mingled with domestic products,” Beech says.

The proposed FDA regulations, the first reforms in food safety in more than 70 years, are designed to address gaps on food production and manufacturing processes that leave an estimated 48 million Americans sick each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Nearly 130,00 of those people are hospitalized and 3,000 die from the illness.

Norton County to Replace Bridge

Starting Monday, January 14, and continuing for approximately three weeks, a survey team from the Kansas Department of Transportation will begin surveying along K-9 Highway in Norton County.

The survey work will take place approximately 4.5 miles west of U.S. 283.  Specifically, the survey will focus on the bridge located over a drainage tributary of the North Fork Solomon River.

The survey is necessary for the detailed design of the replacement of the bridge.

Survey activities will include the use of survey instruments on the ground to determine locations of features within the survey corridor.  When it becomes necessary for crew members to enter private property, they will first obtain permission from the landowner or tenant.
