Visitation Up at Nicodemus National Historic Site in Graham County

nicodemus placqueMore than 3,500 people visited the Nicodemus National Historic Site in Graham County last year.  That’s up considerably from the 2,681 visitors in 2011 reported by the National Park Service (NPS).

A new NPS report for 2011 shows visitors to Nicodemus NHS spent $133,000 in area communities.  The spending supported two local jobs.

“Nicodemus NHS is a wonderful place to learn about America’s story,” says park superintendent Angela Wetz.  “We attract visitors from across the U.S. and around the world who come here to experience the park and getting to know this amazing part of the country.”

Nicodemus is the only remaining black settlement west of the Mississippi River.

The historic site is part of  a National Park Service analysis showing visitor spending in 2011 had a $30 billion impact on the entire U.S. economy and supported 252,000 jobs nationwide.

Kansas Teacher of the Year Team Impressed with Visit

2ND GRADERS“What an opportunity I have to start them on their career paths,” says longtime Ellis kindergarten teacher Stacy Befort.  She’s the USD 388 District Teacher of the Year and a Region I semi-finalist for state Teacher of the year.

Thursday, Befort was host to the Kansas Teacher of the Year visiting team, which toured Washington Grade School and Ellis High School.

The six members of the KTOY Teacher Team are from Great Bend, Pratt, Dodge City and Liberal.

Laurie Harwood has been teaching Great Bend fourth-graders for 26 years.  Although she’s now teaching the sons and daughters of her first students, Harwood says she still has a lot to learn.  And that’s the purpose of the KTOY visiting team–to see what works, and what doesn’t, in other Kansas classrooms.

Harwood is impressed with the Ellis grade school atmosphere.  “I really liked the third grade Daily Five, and character education,” she says.  Technology is changing many teaching methods.  “We saw the kindergarten students using smartboards,” adds Harwood.

USD 388 Superintendent Bob Young accompanied the KTOY visitors.  “We have a good mix of veteran teachers and young teachers in Ellis,” he says, “and Mrs. Befort is a good representation of  what we’re doing for our community.”

Program Rewards Universities for Helping Startups

board of regentsTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Gov. Sam Brownback says he is considering a program that would reward universities and technical colleges for helping startup companies.

During a meeting of economic advisers Wednesday, the governor said it’s only an idea and no details of how to structure the program have been finalized.

But he says the schools could be paid $2,000 to $5,000 to sponsor startup companies. He says the program would help create an entrepreneurial atmosphere in the state.

Graham Toft of the consultant group GrowthEconomists Inc., has suggested Kansas should rebrand itself by focusing on its educated workforce, quality schools, robust transportation and work ethic.

He says the state should also seek more federal grants for small business innovation and research.

KHAZ Country Music News: Trace Adkins Ready to Rumble on All-Star Celebrity Apprentice

khaz trace adkins 20130228Trace Adkins promises All-Star Celebrity Apprentice is going to be a “party every day,” and judging from the trailer featuring the male contestants, it lives up to his word.

The clip not only features Trace wearing an apron and an Italian chef’s hat, but hamming it up in a leopard print caveman dress with a banana leaf on his head.

And as you might expect, things get confrontational for the season 7 runner-up very quickly.  “You’re not going to be able to hold back,” he teases. “You’re gonna have to come guns up right out of the chute.”

For Trace, that includes telling Stephen Baldwin, “You be nice to Marilu (Henner) or I’m gonna kill you.” He also threatens to fit Gary Busey with a shock collar, and to “slap the [bleep]” out of another contestant.

He wryly offers, “They called me and said ‘We need you for your energy and enthusiasm.’”

You can check out Trace’s antics for yourself when All-Star Celebrity Apprentice premieres March 3 on NBC.

Leadership Kansas Includes Two Area Residents; Few Western Kansas Applications

Kansas chamber of commerceThe Kansas Chamber of Commerce has announced the 2013 class for Leadership Kansas. Nobody from Hays or Salina was included this year.

John Federico, Executive Director of the program told Hays Post, “It was not a great year for applications from Western Kansas and there was only one applicant from Hays. We can only deal with the applications we receive. However, it does say a lot about the 35 year old program, still receiving almost 700 nominations and over 100 applications a year.”

Forty applicants are chosen to participate in each class. This year’s class includes two area residents, Dave Engel, CEO of Phillips County Hospital, and Mark Lowry, owner of Heritage Insurance Group in Stockton.

Throughout the six-month program, the members of the class are exposed to a variety of experts and educational 3-day training sessions in six different Kansas communities. The discussion topics include: business; education; agriculture; public policy; societal health and development; economics; and government.
