Sequestration Tomorrow? Huelskamp’s Real Pie Chart Today

Tomorrow, barring a last-minute Washington miracle, President Obama will officially order the highly-anticipated, much-dreaded “sequestration” – an across-the-board set of budget cuts totaling $1.2 trillion from defense and non-defense spending over the course of the next ten years. Don’t worry.

On his “Congressman Tim Huelskamp” Facebook page today, Tim revealed a real pie chart that illustrates the percentage of the government budget that sequestration would actually cutpie chart.

Chris Young concert at the Stiefel Theatre in Salina.

Thursday, March 7, 2013 at 8pm

Congratulations to Karen Howland and Brenda Dechant!

When an artist looks back on his or her own career, there are always moments he or she can point to where there was a shift to another level. Those defining moments tend to be easy to spot with the benefit of hindsight but more difficult to see without the passage of time. Yet Chris Young has a sense that something is happening. “I really do believe in timing,” says Young. “Everybody has a different point in their career when things start to come together and click, when it’s your time.” And as far as timing – Young’s career is ticking like a Swiss watch. The last three singles Chris Young has released have all hit #1 on the charts, including the smash hit “Gettin’ You Home,” a song that earned him his first ever Grammy nomination. “Music is why I’m here and it’s something I can’t live without,” says Young. “It’s what I’m built to do.” His self titled first album would go on to earn Young the title of best selling new male artist for 2006 and a nod for the Academy of Country Music’s Top New Male Vocalist award. Young doubled down on the success of his first record with the release of his second CD, The Man I Want To Be. Any concern over maintaining momentum vanished when the album powered right through the dreaded sophomore slump with three back-to-back #1 singles. The impressive streak started with the title track, picked up steam with “Gettin’ You Home,” and was then followed by a song that would earn Chris Young a place into the history books. “Voices” was originally the first single released from Man. It made its initial run up the chart in late 2008 but stalled just inside the Top 40. When the label made the decision to give it a second go two years later, it soared all the way to #1. “The last time (that) happened was 25 years ago with ‘On The Other Hand’ for Randy Travis,” beams Young, thrilled to have that connection with one his musical heroes.
Young’s all around accomplishments as an entertainer also earned him one the industry’s highest honors: his first ever Grammy nomination for Best Male Country Vocal Performance for “Gettin’ You Home.”

So Far Legislature Keeping Higher Ed Funding Flat

FortHaysState RarickFort Hays State University President Edward Hammond is pleased that the bill approved by a Kansas House committee this week keeps higher education funding flat as opposed to the 10% cut facing other agencies.

Hammond explains that the state needs help from the universities to complete the Governor’s economic plan by providing trained employees for the jobs that are supposed to be created.

Hammond says the flat budget is the best the schools could expect, and the across the board cuts are driven by concern that revenues won’t be adequate.

Many new legislators were elected in November, and Hammond made it a point to meet with each of them.

KHAZ Country Music News: The Band Perry Reveals the Moment They Knew “Better Dig Two” Was a Big Hit

khaz band perry 20120724After The Band Perry took the music world by storm with their breakthrough hit, “If I Die Young,” the sibling trio knew they had to launch their sophomore album with a really big single.  They’re latest #1 hit “Better Dig Two” definitely fits that bill.  The Band Perry debuted the song on last November’s CMA Awards and immediately after the performance their fans started downloading the song in droves.

The group hit a few CMA after-parties following the show, and lead singer Kimberly Perry says, “We were watching the charts and you could just see ‘Better Dig Two’ climbing, climbing, climbing, and then finally hit Number One on iTunes before we went to bed.”

Kimberly’s brother and band mate Neil Perry kept track of “Better Dig Two” trending on Twitter that same night.  He says, “That was pretty cool seeing how people were taking the song instantly and really relating to it.”

Now that “Better Dig Two” has hit #1 at country radio, Kimberly, Neil and their brother Reid Perry are excited to launch the full-length sophomore album, Pioneer, on April 2.

“It was absolutely kind of a validating thing to say ‘Alright here we go, this is off and running,'” Kimberly says of their latest success, “and we can’t just wait for you guys to hear the rest of the record.”

The second single from, Pioneer, is called “DONE.,” and it hit the airwaves Monday.

Senators Roberts, Moran Anonymous?

moranSenator Pat RobertsA new Survey by Public Policy Polling shows that Pat Roberts is one of the most anonymous Senators in the country. 31% of voters approve of him, 28% disapprove, and 41% don’t have an opinion either way. The only Senator in the county Public Policy Polls found with a higher percentage of voters having no opinion about him is first termer Mark Kirk of Illinois.

Jerry Moran is Kansas’ more popular Senator with a 38% approval rating and 27% disapproving, although that makes him one of the less well-known Senators in the country as well.

Nevertheless Roberts shouldn’t be in too much trouble next year, at least in a general election. He leads every Democrat Public Policy Polling tested against him by double digits- it’s 11 points over Kathleen Sebelius at 51/40, 15 points over Mark Parkinson at 49/34, and 16 over Carl Brewer at 50/34.

Roberts’ low profile could give him more trouble in a primary. Just 42% of Republicans say they would vote to re-nominate him, while 34% say they would prefer someone ‘more conservative.’ Those are pretty uninspiring numbers if a more fiery candidate wanted to challenge him from the right. Roberts has bigger leads over specific GOP alternatives we tested against him though- 21 points over Todd Tiahrt at 47/26, 31 over Tim Huelskamp at 53/22, and 36 over Kris Kobach at 55/19.

Democrats might have a better chance with someone like Huelskamp as the GOP nominee- he leads the Brewer/Sebelius/Parkinson trio by only 4-6 points. But obviously the Republican lean of the state will make it hard for Democrats regardless of the GOP candidate.

Head on Crash Kills One

A head on car crash west of Long Island, Kansas, in Phillips County on Wednesday killed a 20 year old Nebraska man and seriously injured a 22 year old woman from Logan.
Screen Shot 2013-02-28 at 5.44.30 AM According to the Kansas Highway Patrol Austin Shaw of Stamford, Nebraska was driving north on W. 1500 Road when his 1990 Oldsmobile Delta 88 swerved left of center and hit a Chevy Silverado driven by 22 year old Jessica L Eshbaugh of Logan. Shaw died at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt. Eshbaugh was airlifted to the hospital in Kearney, Nebraska.

Plainville’s Brull Among “20 Family Doctors to Follow on Twitter”

brull jenniferPlainville doctor Jennifer Brull is one of 20 family physicians listed by the website Medical Economics as the best in the nation to follow on Twitter.

“Twitter is full of physicians who use the social media site to stay up on the latest medical trends, interact with colleagues and patients, and further their own personal brands,” writes Brandon Glenn.

“Likewise, the web is full of lists of the best doctors to follow on Twitter.  But for those looking for a list of the top family physicianson Twitter, things have been a little more difficult.

“One recent study even claimed that primary care physicians have lagged their specialist peers in Twitter adoption, a sentiment the following physicians aren’t likely to share.

“Below is Medical Economics’ completely subjective list of 20 insightful, interesting and active family doctors on Twitter, in no particular order.

“Jen Brull: @MrsBrull Practicing in Kansas, Brull sometimes provides a rural perspective on the practice of family medicine.”

Kansas Senate: Get Welfare? Get Drug Tested

The Kansas Senate has tentatively approved legislation requiring drug tests for some people seeking certain welfare benefits, after amending it to require the same scrutiny of legislators.

drug testWednesday night’s vote advanced the bill to final Senate action Thursday. Passage would send it to the House.

The bill would require the Department of Children and Family Services to screen applicants for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families benefits for illegal drug use. Those identified with a suspicion of use would be subject to testing.

The state would provide drug treatment and job skills training to those who test positive.

Members of the Senate’s Democratic minority amended the bill during debate to include legislators, arguing it’s only fair to hold elected officials to the same scrutiny as individuals seeking government assistance.
