City work crews have done an outstanding job keeping essential roads open in the midst of the biggest snowfall in many years. Hays Public Works Director ID Creech told Hays Post that his team has also received some assistance to get the work done. ” We pushed all day (Thursday) trying to stay even on the major traffic routes and got some help from the Parks and Utility Departments with equipment and manpower and cleaned out several of the intersections.”
Now Creech and city staff can possibly see some light at the end of this snowstorm tunnel.
“We have had a crew working through the night further clearing the major snow routes and also working on the secondary routes. Some salt/sand applications and
brine will be applied with the anticipation of sunshine today to activate and begin the melt.” Then they have the big task of moving the snow away from downtown, said Creech.
“Our plan is to clean the downtown area Friday night into Saturday morning hauling the snow out of the area to a deposit location off South Main.”
If you see city work crews, away from their busy task, be sure to thank them. They have had quite a week.

Jason Aldean launches his Night Train tour Thursday night in Bossier City, LA with special guests Jake Owen and Thomas Rhett. The trek will also feature Miranda Lambert and Luke Bryan on select stadium dates this year, and Jason spent a lot of time deciding which acts he wanted to join him this year.
“It’s something that kind of starts way in advance,” Jason tells ABC News Radio. “I think you kind of take a look at some artists and see who, obviously, who’s having some success.”
On top of their big success, Jake, Miranda and Luke have all come up in the music business about the same time as Jason.
He says, “We’ve all worked together and toured together in the past. And that’s always a big part of it for me too is being out on the road with people that I enjoy hanging out with and that I’m a fan of what they do.”
Ultimately, Jason thinks about the people buying tickets to his shows when deciding who will fill those supporting slots on his tour.
“If you do it right, I think it turns out to be a great thing for fans when they come out,” Jason explains.
Jake Owen is honored to join Jason for every date of the Night Train tour in the opening spot Luke Bryan filled last year.
“The way that his album sales, ticket sales and just his presence in our format, he’s about as big as you can get,” Jake says of Jason. “So, to be kind of the guy he puts his arm around, kind of like he did with Luke, ‘This guy’s my guy here.’ I’m very flattered for that.”
After rehearsing with his own state-of-the-art stage set and lighting rig this week in Nashville, Jake is prepared to put on a headliner-caliber show.
He says, “I’m excited for the fans out there to see it, because obviously they know what they’re gonna get with Jason, an amazing, great rocking country show, but I’m excited for them to be pretty blown away with our show as well. We’ve been working pretty hard.”

Lee Brice and his fiancé Sara are getting married in April, and they’ve decided to hold the ceremony in Branson, MO of all places. So, why are they headed there to say “I do”?
Lee tells MetroMix.com, “We wanted a small wedding, so Nashville seemed like too many people, and Sumter [South Carolina] where I’m from had too many folks, too. We wanted to go somewhere neutral.”
There’s no danger of getting cold feet at the altar though. He says, “I’m so excited, I wish I was getting married tomorrow.”
Until then, Lee is on the road with Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley‘s Locked and Reloaded tour. They’ve got a show in Ames, IA Thursday night.

Victoria farmer/rancher Tim L. Schumacher, along with his grandson Chase Schumacher and their dog Buckshot, check cattle earlier this afternoon.
“Just the regular daily check,” according to Tim’s wife Tammy. “No new baby calves. We’re hoping we don’t have any in this weather,” she says, “although there have been years when we had to bring calves into the house to warm them up.”
The Schumachers live four miles south of Victoria. They estimate the snowfall there is more than 12 inches.
It’s still snowing.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – A Kansas House committee is working on a bill that would be the first phase of a plan to do away with civil service protections for state employees.
The House Appropriations Commission is drafting the bill, which would allow state agencies to hire unclassified workers for more jobs.
State agencies currently must hire classified employees for nearly all positions. Classified employees are protected under the Kansas Civil Service Act from being hired, fired or demoted based on several factors, such as race, religion or disability. Unclassified employees can be hired and fired at will.
The supporters contend phasing out the civil service protections would give state agencies more flexibility in hiring.
Opponents say state law already provides ways to move employees from classified to unclassified status.
