Special Weather Statement from City of Hays

snow-routes-300x231

The condition of Hays’ Emergency Snow Routes is deteriorating quickly. Crews are making every effort to keep up, but the snow is accumulating faster than we can remove it.

At this time we are asking everyone to stay off the streets unless it is absolutely necessary.

Some arterial and collector streets have deteriorated to the point where non-four wheel drive vehicles are having difficulty maneuvering and several vehicles have become stuck in the roadway. Please be aware that City crews will not remove vehicles from the roadway unless they are public safety vehicles. It is imperative that city crews concentrate on removing snow from the roadway. They cannot be diverted from this mission in order to remove stuck vehicles.

The current winter storm is supposed to last for several more hours, with winds increasing later in the day. This will cause drifting and exacerbate the matter.

I-70 is closed between Hays and Salina, both directions. This will cause added traffic/congestion in the North Vine area.

Historic Landmark Fire; Eyewitness Account

Residents of Abilene are in shock this morning. Their historic Kirby House Restaurant, built in 1885 caught fire last night. Nobody was inside when the fire started.

Screen Shot 2013-02-20 at 7.54.33 PM
Terry Tietjens of Abilene was at the scene of the fire. Tietjens is the man who turned the Kirby House into a restaurant. He purchased the home in 1986 and at the time it had been turned into an apartment building. After Tietjens bought it he spent a year restoring it and turning it into a restaurant. Tietjens went on to say,”We opened it as a restaurant in 1987 on October 17th. What a nice restaurant it was. It’s a big piece of our history going up in flame tonight.”

Emotions ran deep with Tietjens. He made a comparison that showed how much the house meant to him,”It’s like loosing one of your children, or loosing an important person in your life.”

He said that the renovation cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and really was a nice restaurant for the community. He later sold the restaurant and moved on to other projects. Tietjens is currently a big part of “Old Abilene” in downtown Abilene.

The Kirby House was built in 1885.

KHAZ Country Music News: Scotty McCreery and the CMA Present $1.2 Million Check to Nashville School Music Programs

khaz scotty mccreery 20130221Scotty McCreery was on hand to present a $1.2 million check to Nashville area school music programs Tuesday at the annual CMA Keep the Music Playing concert in Music City.  The money was raised from ticket sales to the 2012 CMA Music Festival, and the concert featured performances from the students who benefit from that donation year after year. Since 2006, the Keep the Music Playing campaign has donated more than $6.5 million to Nashville Metro Public Schools’ music programs.

In addition to presenting the check, Scotty also sang Garth Brooks‘ “The River” with the help of some students.  Though he’s now headlining his own tour, Scotty started out singing in school choir just like some of those students.  That experience gave Scotty the chance to start developing his performance skills.

He says, “I remember talent day we had for choir one time in elementary school, I brought my guitar in and played ’em an Elvis song I think.  So, we did little stuff like that.”

Scotty adds, “I was in school music my entire life.  Started in elementary school, middle school, high school.  That was definitely a huge part in my musical background and my foundation and everything.”

While growing up in Garner, NC, Scotty heard about debates over whether or not to cut funding for school music programs.  He’s glad the money from the CMA Music Festival can help schools around Nashville avoid that problem.

“It’s great for an event like this to be supplementing that or helping that out,” Scotty says.  “It’d be huge, especially those kids growing up that want to play those instruments and are trying to learn, but may not have the resources.  This is great for that.”

Scotty looks forward to playing the CMA Music Festival again this June.  He’s also in the studio working on brand-new music.  A new single is expected out pretty soon.

Be Careful; Shoveling Snow is Not A Typical Workout

Lifting 10 shovels of wet snow in one minute’s time is comparable to climbing seven flights of stairs. A full shovel of wet snow can weigh as much as 20 pounds.

Lightening the load may not help. If the shovel and snow weigh only nine pounds, lifting ten shovelfulls in one minute is the same as climbing three flights of stairs.

When you are clearing a large area you are placing tremendous strain on your heart.

To lessen the risk of heart attack follow these guidelines:

* Don’t shovel snow if you know your blood pressure is high or if you have heart disease.

* If you are not in top physical condition, take it very slow and easy. Load the shovel only half full, or even less if the snow is wet, and move only a few shovels in a minute’s time. Rest often.

* Cover your head because 30 percent of body heat is lost through the head. Low temperatures can cause a rise in blood pressure in some people and can also cause a spasm of the coronary arteries.

* Move your legs frequently to help pump blood through the leg veins. If you don’t move your legs frequently while shoveling, blood may pool in the legs.

* Watch your breathing. It is a natural inclination to hold your breath as you lift a heavy shovel of snow. Since this decreases the return of blood to the heart, it can cause cardiac irregularities.

* Avoid the use of alcohol, cigarettes and coffee before shoveling snow. These substances dilate blood vessels, and that means you won’t be able to retain the body heat you need when in the cold.

* It’s unwise to shovel snow soon after a large meal. Blood is being diverted to help the body digest the food and less blood is available to allow circulation to the fingers and toes.

* People in good physical condition because of jogging or bicycling should not assume they are immune from heart attacks. These exercises may not be strengthening the arm’s muscles to the same degree as leg muscles. Since shoveling snow involves the arms, the heart has to work harder to pump blood because circulation in the arms is usually less efficient.

Following Investigation, New Interim Principal Named

Myron Flax probably did not have to go to work Wednesday. There was no school for USD 208 because of the snowstorm.

Flax is the interim high school principal at Trego Community High School. He replaces John Luhrs who resigned last month.

According to a press release from USD 208, Luhrs was placed on administrative leave in December when Superintendent, Dr. George Griffith decided to investigate concerns related to the implementation of school district policy. Griffith stated that “Mr. Luhrs did not violate any laws or harm any students or staff members.”

Myron FlaxThe school’s web site says, “Myron Flax has indicated a desire to promote a safe learning environment in which the disruption of learning for any student will not occur and Flax reminded students that TCHS is not about one individual; It’s about 94 students, he said.”
