Jimmy Dee DVD To Benefit Area Youth

Kaden pictureJimmy Dee DVD biography proceeds to benefit Kayden’s Kampaign

After numerous months of compiling and editing photographs and video footage, Jimmy Dee and the Fabulous Destinations has announced plans to officially release a DVD biography of the band in conjunction with a fundraiser for a young boy diagnosed with a rare liver cancer.

Drummer Bill Gasper said all proceeds from the sale of the DVD will be donated to Kayden’s Kampaign, a fund established for Kayden Tiernan, the two-year-old son of Kerry and April (Weber) Tiernan. According to Kayden’s grandmother, Julie Weber, a large tumor was found on his liver shortly after celebrating his second birthday. In September, he was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma, a childhood cancer that affects one in 1.2 million infants and children.

Gasper said Leon Frank, former member of the Jimmy Dee Band, generously spent countless hours producing the biography. While it is Frank’s strong desire to get his work out to the public, he does not want to profit from the venture.

“We were initially only going to produce so many DVDs, and we thought that might cause a problem just to give them away to anybody who requested one,” Gasper said. “Thus, we decided to sell the biography and donate the proceeds to Kayden’s Kampaign. We feel this is a perfect choice for the money because we are all from Victoria and grew up with Kayden’s grandparents, Julie (Brungardt) and Mitch Weber.”

To add an extra incentive to purchase the biography, Gasper said anybody who buys a video for $15 will be given one ticket to a Jimmy Dee performance at the Fanchon Ballroom on March 2 from 8:30-11:30 p.m.

The band is donating its time, and Victoria native Mark Linenberger is donating the use of the facility. For those who want to bring their spouse or significant other, a free will donation will be accepted as the price of admission at the door. Additionally, Terry Pfeifer and Tom Schmidtberger, also Victoria natives and members of The Helping Hands of God, are planning to sell chances for a Traeger grill from Crawford Supply and other door prizes as a means to generate more donations for the family.

DVDs are available at the following locations:   Hays – Cerv’s; Victoria – Sunflower Bank, Gorham State Bank, and Victoria Food & Variety; Russell – Woelk’s House of Diamonds, Jagged Edge, and D Palma and Co.

Julie Weber said Kayden is currently undergoing treatment at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. He has finished five rounds of chemotherapy to shrink the large tumor and awaits a liver transplant.

Kayden’s Kampaign was initially established by family and friends at Golden Plains Credit Union as an ongoing effort to help the family with expenses.

“Our world was turned upside down on Sept. 25,” Julie said. “But through the generous hearts and prayers of so many, Kayden’s miracle has begun. Words can never express how thankful we are.  We strongly believe in the power of prayer and we ask for you continued prayers as we face this challenging battle.”

Kayden has a 3.5 year old brother Michael, and his paternal grandparents are Mike and Sherry Tiernan of Beloit. His great grandmothers are Margaret Brungardt, Victoria, and Colleen Tiernan, Fort Worth, Texas.

“We are overwhelmed and very much appreciate our hometown guys–Jimmy Dee and the Fabulous Destinations—for putting on this huge fundraiser for our little one,” Mitch Weber said.

The DVD traces the history of the band from its early roots in 1975 all the way to the present. It features numerous photographs, both old and recent, along with video footage as far back as the 1970s when the band performed at the Jerry Lewis Telethon in the Mall at Hays.

“It’s a great DVD and not just because I’m in it,” Gasper said. “We just can’t thank Leon Frank enough for all the hard work in producing it because it is a great piece of memorabilia for those of us in the band, as well as for all the many loyal followers we have had the past 30-plus years. It is because of that support that has made all of this possible. We want to encourage all of our fans to purchase one of these DVDs, enjoy an evening with the band, and most importantly, support a very worthy cause.”

After 3 Weeks in Topeka, Boldra says “Just What I Hoped For.”

It’s Day 22 of the Kansas State Legislative session and 111th State Representative Sue Boldra told Hays Post this week that she is really enjoying her work in Topeka. “It is exciting and very busy and just exactly what I had hoped for.”

Boldra, a former teacher, is active on the Education, the Agriculture and Natural Resource Committee in addition to the Energy and Environment, and Utilities and Telecommunications committees. Among the bills that she’s sponsored during her first 3 weeks of work is HB 2199, the 2nd amendment protection act.

Boldra said she is happy to be back in Hays for Saturday’s “Eggs and Issues Legislative Forum” presented by the Hays Area Chamber of Commerce, 8:30a.m. in the Fort Hays State University Robbins Center.

Also on Saturday, Boldra along with 40th District Senator Ralph Ostmeyer, Grinnell; and 110th District Representative Travis Couture-Lovelady,  Palco will also host town hall meetings at 11 a.m. in Victoria at the Former St. John’s Rest Home on 7th street and at 2 p.m. in Ellis in the city council chamber room.Boldra 2

Soldiers Returning to Fort Riley

fort-riley-300x201FORT RILEY, Kan. (AP) – The first soldiers from the 1st Infantry Division’s Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion are beginning to return home to Kansas from deployment in Afghanistan.

On Monday, about 50 soldiers from the battalion and 300 from the division’s 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team were welcomed home during a ceremony with friends and family at FortRiley.

Soldiers with the headquarters battalion spent the last year in eastern Afghanistan as part of the regional command. The 4th Brigade were also part of the eastern command but were deployed for about nine months.

More flights are expected to arrive from Afghanistan over the next month as all remaining soldiers return to the northeast Kansas post.

Fighting for Your Mortgage Interest Tax Deduction, Realtors Rally Today

This morning the Kansas Association of Realtors has dozens of its members at the Statehouse to push lawmakers to preserve two popular income tax breaks for homeowners.

The group said it expected more than 250 members to participate in theFor Sale my owner sign rally and to lobby legislators afterward.

The association hopes to save two state income tax deductions targeted for elimination by Republican Gov. Sam Brownback. One deduction is for the property taxes Kansans pay on their homes and the other is for the interest on their home mortgages.

Brownback wants to scrap the deductions as part of his plan to position Kansas to phase out personal income taxes while stabilizing its budget. A Senate committee endorsed most of Brownback’s plan Tuesday, including the proposal to end the mortgage interest deduction.

KHAZ Country Music News: Kacey Musgraves Cooked Up “Merry Go Round” Video in Her Friend’s Kitchen

khaz kacey musgraves 20130213Kacey Musgraves‘ “Merry Go Round” video has racked up more than 2.7 million views on Vevo, but the clip had very humble beginnings.  Kacey and her friend actually made the clip while surfing the Internet in that friend’s kitchen.

She tells ABC News Radio, “We stumbled upon this archive full of vintage footage like that, and it was really cool because you could search by keyword.  So, we looked up suburbia, 1960 family, church, whatever.”

Kacey feels the archival footage of that long-gone era captures the small town repression she sings about in “Merry Go Round.”

She says, “Especially back in the day, that whole thing of like, look pretty and be proper and don’t air your dirty laundry kind of thing, that is crazy to me ’cause it’s just gonna make it worse later, you know?”

Kacey certainly doesn’t hold back in her own songwriting.  You can hear more of it when her debut album, Same Trailer Different Park, lands in stores March 19. She’ll perform “Merry Go Round” on NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday.

Congressman Huelskamp Refers to State of the Union as Empty Rhetoric

Kansas First District Congressman Tim Huelskamp attended President Obama’s State of the Union Address on Tuesday evening. He issued the following reaction to the President’s remarks:

“Empty rhetoric is no replacement for real leadership. Despite tremendous proof showing that Big Government does not work, President Obama doubled down on growing the influence of Washington in the day-to-day affairs of families, local schools, and state governments. And, even if it means abandoning the Constitution or acting above the law, President Obama made it very clear that he will take matters into his own hands and subvert the legislative authority of Congress.”

Huelskamp continued:

“Where are the jobs, President Obama? Nearly 23 million Americans are out of work, underemployed, or have given up looking for work altogether. That means millions of households where the American Dream is dying or is dead. For so many families across the nation, the prospect that the next generation will be better off than the last seems like a distant hope. Even if folks are employed, many face stagnant wages and higher costs of living; many are dipping into their retirement savings – or not even saving altogether. It’s a recipe for sustained financial disaster.”

“Why is your Administration waging a war against entrepreneurs? Only twice did you say ‘small business,’ despite the fact that it is the engine of economic growth. Our small businesses demand that Washington cut the red tape and cut taxes, yet your Administration’s record is abysmal on those fronts. Freedom, growth, and opportunity will prevail when Washington gets out of the way.”

“Where is the promised deficit reduction, President Obama? In 2009, you promised to cut the deficit in half by the end of your first term. Instead, you have a record of trillion-dollar deficits every single year of your presidency. Instead of paying down the deficits, let alone the debt, you have offered nothing but unbalanced and irresponsible budgets that ask the next generation to foot the bill for your lack of leadership. The 111th Congress tried your big-government stimulus; all that’s left is another $1 trillion in debt.”

“Why are you doubling down on your health care plan when there is overwhelming evidence that it is not going to deliver what you promised? Millions of Americans will lose their employer-based coverage, despite the assurances that they could keep their plan if they like it. CBO predicts more than a trillion dollars of unanticipated costs. And, most egregiously, this Administration is willing to eliminate the most precious of our freedoms – religious liberty – in order to advance their own narrow agenda. Forcing people of faith to pay for abortion drugs is a tremendous affront to more than 200 years of freedom of religion.”Tim Tuelskamp 3

Western KS Sites Nominated for National Register of Historic Places

nrhp-plaqueThe Kansas Historic Sites Board of Review, Topeka, voted February 9 to forward 14 nominations to the Office of the Keeper of the National Register of Historic Places in Washington, D.C., to be evaluated by its professional staff. If staff members concur with the board’s findings, the properties will be included in the National Register.

The National Register of Historic Places is the country’s official list of historically significant properties.

Below are summaries of the nominations in western Kansas:

National Register of Historic Places

Oakley High School Stadium – 118 W 7th Street, Oakley, Logan County

The construction of Oakley High School Stadium in 1938 was financed through the New Deal-era Works Progress Administration (WPA) and has hosted football games and track meets since its completion in 1939. Lewis Mershon was the lead builder and used a team of unskilled WPA laborers made up of financially struggling local farmers. The limestone and concrete stadium faces a standard 100-yard football field with natural grass surface encircled by a 400-meter track and includes two locker rooms, restrooms, a tornado shelter, and outdoor bleacher seating. It exhibits symmetry, vertical and horizontal lines, and rounded features, all of which gives it a WPA Moderne appearance. The stadium was first used on October 6, 1939 for the first home football game of the season between the Oakley Plainsmen and the Colby Eagles. Although the local newspaper reminded readers that Oakley had defeated Colby “seven times in the last eleven years,” the Plainsmen were “trounced” by the “powerful” Eagles. It is nominated as part of the New Deal-era Resources of Kansas multiple property submission for its local significance in the areas of recreation, government, and architecture.

Harry Keith Barn – ¼ mile E of 200th Avenue on M Road, Penokee, Graham County

The Harry Keith Barn is located south of Penokee in Graham County and was built in October 1940 by farmer Harry Keith with the help of his brothers and neighbors. Situated within a landscape of rolling agricultural fields and century-old cottonwood trees along nearby Brush Creek, the barn is built into a hillside and features an iconic gambrel roof. The barn’s lower level functioned as a place to house and feed livestock and milk cattle, and the upper level served as hay and grain storage. The surrounding farmstead includes a few remaining outbuildings. Adjacent to the barn is an Aermotor windmill, likely the 702 model, which was first manufactured by the Aermotor Company of Chicago in 1933, along with a reservoir that holds 4,000 gallons of water. The Keith Barn is nominated to the National Register as part of the Agriculture-Related Resources of Kansas multiple property nomination for its local significance in the areas of agriculture and architecture.

Boot Hill Museum – 500 Wyatt Earp Boulevard, Dodge City, Ford County

Dodge City’s livelihood has long depended upon its ability to reinvent itself. It was born of the Santa Fe Trail, developed with the coming of the Santa Fe Railroad, and looked to the New Santa Fe Trail – Highway 50 – for renewal. While Dodge City was remaking itself, the entertainment industry was capitalizing on its place in American popular culture – as the stereotypical Wild West town. While the protagonists of dime novels, movies, and television series like Gunsmoke’s Matt Dillon were telling bad guys to “get the heck out of Dodge,” tourists flocked to the legendary town. By the mid-20th century, the city’s efforts to live down its rowdy past were overwhelmed by the potential for capitalizing on it. Locals had been advocating for a Boot Hill museum as early as the 1920s, but it wasn’t until after the 1939 world premiere of the movie Dodge City, which firmly placed the town within the popular culture lexicon, that the city commission issued bonds to begin construction. The site developed in stages and was largely complete by 1964. Boot Hill Museum is nominated as part of the Roadside Kansas multiple property nomination for its significance in the areas of entertainment and education as a mid-20th century museum that interprets Dodge City’s history as a cowtown and for its association with the local tourism industry.

Santa Fe Trail – Ford County Segment 2 (Fowler’s Ruts) Ford vicinity, Ford County

The Santa Fe Trail – Ford County Segment 2, also known as Fowler’s Ruts, was part of the Wet Route of the Santa Fe Trail in Kansas from 1821 until 1867. During a period of tension between Mexico and the Republic of Texas in 1843, this segment was used by the First US dragoons, under the command of Captain Philip St. George Cooke, as they escorted a Santa Fe-bound caravan. Cooke and the dragoons forded the Arkansas River near this site to accept the surrender of Colonel Jacob Snively and his “Texas Invincibles.” Between 1849 and 1869, this trail segment and its associated spring also saw use by travelers heading to Wyoming along the Cherokee Trail. This trail segment is nominated for its significance in the areas of transportation, military, and commerce and for its potential to yield archeological information.

Currently the state maintains guidelines that schools are encouraged, but not mandated, to follow. But the new regulations on “emergency safety interventions” would go further by requiring all school districts to adopt formal policies that conform to specific standards. They would also require schools to provide training in the use of those interventions and to document every instance when they are used.
