“Finding almost 4 pounds of marijuana is significant for inside the city,” Hays Police Lt. Brandon Wright told Hays Post. That marijuana was confiscated from an Oklahoma City man after police spotted drug paraphernalia in his car during a routine check of vehicles in a local motel parking lot this week. “We’re not working I-70 so finding that much marijuana is unusual.” confirmed Wright. Twenty four year old David Twichell remains in the Ellis County jail on various drug charges. Police also seized his 2008 Subaru, $2500 in cash, an iPad, and an iPhone.

Unnecessary Fire Run, Residents Reminded Open Burn Policy Has Not Changed
A lack of communication with the County by a landowner at 1154 250th Avenue on Tuesday, resulted in an unnecessary emergency run by Ellis County Rural Fire. Dan Wells with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) office in Hays told Hays Post, “There has been no change in policy on open burning. However, when someone is legally burning items on their property, they need to contact Ellis County law enforcement.” There is no KDHE permit required for the typical burning being done in rural or agriculture areas and no approval is needed from the KDHE.
According to Ellis County Rural Fire Director Dick Klaus, “Tuesday’s fire run was simply a miscommunication. The individual burning trash had called the KDHE, learned that they could not include mattresses and a microwave in the fire, took those items out of the trash burning, and then did not communicate with the county that they were going to go ahead and burn other items.”
Some items are illegal to burn. A complete list of the open burning regulations is available on the KDHE web site https://www.kdheks.gov

Tiger Baseball Cruises Past Bethany in Home Opener
Fort Hays State baseball cruised to a 17-3 win over Bethany College on Wednesday afternoon at Larks Park in Hays. The win pushed Fort Hays State’s record to 3-1 heading into its first conference series of the season this weekend at Larks Park against Central Missouri.
The Tigers took the early 2-0 lead after one inning and never gave it back, scoring two in the second, three in the third, four in the fourth, and six in the fifth to build a comfortable lead of 17-3 after five innings. KHAZ Country Music News: Tim McGraw and Faith Hill Celebrate the Little Things This Valentine’s Day
Tim McGraw and Faith Hill certainly have the means to buy each other over-the-top Valentine’s Day gifts this year, but that’s not really the couple’s personal style.
“I think small things are a big thing to us,” Tim tells ABC News Radio. “I think ’cause outside of our personal life, everything is so in the spotlight and sort of magnified so much. For us, small things are more important, are really what makes our life turn.”
Those small moments in their relationship often revolve around their three daughters, who are growing up fast.
Tim says, “It really is about waking up in the morning, being with your kids and having breakfast. Driving them to school. Talking about your day at the end of the day at dinner. Those kinds of things.”
Of course, Tim and Faith are creating big moments on stage for their fans with their Soul 2 Soul shows at the Venetian in Las Vegas. They’re playing four shows there this weekend.

No New Highway Projects Selected for NW Kansas
During a three-stop tour this week, Kansas Transportation Secretary Mike King and Governor Sam Brownback announced projects that have been selected for preliminary engineering.
KDOT leaders reviewed about 100 projects and made their final selections based on engineering factors and public recommendations received during a series of local consultation meetings in October.
No new projects were selected for Northwest Kansas, but some projects were previously selected and are currently underway, including the reconstruction and widening of the shoulders of U.S. 281 in Russell County.
A complete list of all of the projects selected is available on KDOT’s T-WORKS website.
Christian Group’s Prayer Criticized
A Christian group that ministers to Kansas lawmakers is seeking prayers for what it calls dark spiritual sections of the state. The Capitol Commission says that southeast Kansas, Lawrence, north Johnson County and Kansas City, Kan., need extra prayer. The leader of the group says those areas were mentioned for their economic troubles, not for their political leanings.
The letter also asks for prayers for the governor, his staff, legislative leaders and the media. The Kansas City Star reports representatives of Kansas City, Kan., and Lawrence objected to letter, calling the characterization of their areas offensive and unbelievable.
The Kansas director of the Capitol Commission apologized if the wording offended anyone but denied the plea for prayer was focused on Democratic strongholds.

KHAZ Country Music News: Brantley Gilbert Having a Blast More than a Year After Getting Sober
Brantley Gilbert still considers himself a “hell-raiser” even though he’s given up the bottle. He made the decision to get sober more than a year ago, and it’s been a positive change for Brantley.
He tells TheBoot.com, “I felt like I could be more productive if I didn’t [drink], and it wasn’t something I really needed in my life.”
Though he doesn’t go into details, Brantley admits the decision to stop drinking was prompted by things that were going on around him too. Now that he’s sober, Brantley is thankful for the people in his life who help him stay that way. That group includes Brantley’s fiancée, Jana Kramer.
Says Brantley, “I actually have a really good support system. People around me have been really cool.”
Brantley will hit the road with fellow sober country star Tim McGraw this summer on the Two Lanes of Freedom tour, launching May 2 in Birmingham, AL.
