Twins among HHS Indian Call Candidates

The annual Indian Call winter dance was Saturday night at Hays High School.   At halftime of the basketball game on Friday night seniors Derek Drees and Maddie Peters were crowned King and Queen, as selected by a vote of the students.

Among the 12 Indian Call candidates, two others also received a lot of attention during Friday’s festivities. Twins Connor and Courtney Hess were the first brother and sister duo anyone can remember being selected for such distinction

The Hess Twins, pictured below with their parents, have been attending school in Hays since 5th grade. According to a video from the Hays High web site, Connor plans to attend New York University next fall and Courtney is deciding between Kansas State and Colorado State University.  Either way she will be quite a distance from her twin brother.

Two More Indians Sign Letters Of Intent

Two more Hays High Indians signed their letters of intent to play college athletics Friday morning at the school cafeteria.  Both Derek Bixenman and Kellen Griffin inked letters to play at Fort Hays State University, but in different sports.

Griffin signed to play soccer for the Tigers.  The talented senior played nearly every position on the pitch as a high schooler, even filling in at goalie one game.  Griffin considered both Drake and South Dakota School of Mines before settling on FHSU. Coach Chris Michaelis says that Griffin finished in the top ten or fifteen in nearly every career record over his time at HHS.

Bixenman will continue his track and field career for the black and gold.  The senior injured his knee during football his sophomore season and while he did participate during track was never at full strength.  It was Bixenman’s junior year were he broke out, high jumping 6’6″ at the state meet in Wichita.  That jump was good enough to finish Bixenman second behind teammate Adam Deterding.  Bixenman helped the Indians to a third consecutive team state title in the spring of 2012.  Bixenman was also a first team WAC basketball player last season.

Gun Sale Results in Fight, Arrest

police-lights3The Hays Police Department says the botched sale of a gun last month resulted in an Aggravated Battery arrest.

Police were called to a disturbance in the alley of the 200 block of West 7th Street on January 31. No one was in the immediate area when officers arrived, but there was a pool of blood and a blood trail.

Officers investigated and determined that John C. Towle tried to buy a 9mm handgun from another citizen and a disagreement over the price resulted in a fight. The victim suffered head and facial injuries.

Towle has been arrested for Aggravated Battery and Felony Possession of a Firearm. He also was cited for Disorderly Conduct for a separate incident.
