FHSU Student Media Task Force Named

leader final editionA task force has been named to review the student media needs at Fort Hays State University.

The move comes after the final printed edition of the campus  newspaper “The Leader” was published last week, although an online version is still available.

In a Friday morning news conference, President Ed Hammond named a task force of faculty, staff and S-G-A members to review the media needs of the university, which also has campus radio and TV stations.

Despite reports of alumni criticisms on social media bout the Leader’s demise, Hammond says he hasn’t had any complaints.

“I was expecting some,” he said, “but I’ve talked to many alums who say they support this, and understand that traditional dissemination of news and other information is changing.”

The task force will also  look at multi-media models and strengthening the cross-curriculum academic components.  A symposium next month will seek the advice and input of local and regional media professionals.

The FHSU yearbook, “Reveille,” ceased publication in 2005.

Kansas Legislature Being Proactive on Guns

Guns are among the hottest topics during this legislative session. Among the most controversial discussions is if the state should stop federal agents from taking your guns by making it illegal to do so in Kansas. Legislation to make this law is now being considered in Topeka. Five members of a state House of Representatives subcommittee is busy attempting to read through a number of gun bills.  House Bill 2199 would make any federal law or regulation that might be in conflict with your right to bear arms unenforceable in Kansas.

Another House bill being discussed this week prevents cities and counties of making regulations on how you transport or store your guns.Hand gun

khaz faith hill tim mcgraw 20130208Tim McGraw and Faith Hill are teaming up to help salute Bruce Springsteen as the Recording Academy’s MusiCares Person of the Year at a star-studded gala tonight in Los Angeles. The couple, who will duet on Bruce’s song “Tougher than the Rest,” has gotten to know The Boss personally in the past few years, and they still look up to him as a true music icon.

“He’s one of those guys that there’s only been a handful of throughout the history of music,” Tim tells ABC News Radio, adding, “The great thing about music and what Bruce is able to do is it describes situations and describes feelings and emotions that you didn’t realize that you had or you didn’t know how to voice those opinions or voice those emotions.”

Tim goes on to describe Bruce as a “great,” “solid” guy saying, “His image is one of those of a guy who just sort of knows how to walk the road with everybody, and he really is that kind of guy.”

In addition to Tim and Faith, Kenny Chesney, Zac Brown and Natalie Maines of The Dixie Chicks are also paying tribute to Bruce at tonight’s event.  The Daily Show‘s Jon Stewart, a huge fan of The Boss, will host the event, which takes place two days before the 55th Grammy Awards ceremony.

Proceeds from the MusiCares gala, which celebrates not only Springsteen’s artistic achievements but also his charity work, will go to help musicians and those in the music industry who need financial, medical or personal help.

Fuel Stolen from Great Bend Business

Police - Tape 003GREAT BEND, Kan. (AP) – A central Kansas truck repair shop has lost about $5,000 worth of diesel fuel to thieves who’ve probably been draining the tanks of semis for several weeks.

Central Power Systems and Services in Great Bend Manager Ethan Rowley says employees found the tank nearly empty in one semi. Employees then checked the other five trucks awaiting repairs, and all had empty tanks. Rowley says each tanks holds 300 to 500 gallons.

Great Bend police believe the tanks were emptied over the past month while the trucks were on the lot.

Company officials say it’s the biggest theft since it opened for business in the 1950s.

Brownback Asks for Mediation in School Funding Case

BrownbackTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt and Gov. Sam Brownback are asking the state Supreme Court to stay a lower court’s ruling on school finance and send the case to mediation.

The documents were filed Thursday in Topeka in response to a Jan. 11 ruling from a three-judge panel in Shawnee County District Court that the state’s system for funding K-12 schools was unconstitutional.

Brownback said in a statement that it is the Legislature’s duty to set funding for schools but lawmakers owe it to taxpayers, parents, teachers and students to discuss a way to solve the dispute.

A group of school districts and parents filed the lawsuit in 2010 alleging that the state was out of compliance with a 2005 Supreme Court order.
