KHAZ Country Music News: Tim McGraw Goes Commando on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show”

khaz tim mcgraw 20121031Tim McGraw talked about his decision to quit drinking on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Tuesday, but he got even more personal when discussing his underwear, or lack thereof.  Tim was spotted wearing his Ellen underwear while on a jog in an impromptu picture with a fan, but he admitted he wasn’t wearing any underwear at all while sitting across from Ellen on the set.

He said, “These pants were too tight to put underwear on.  Now I’ve really embarrassed my daughters.”

Ellen shot back, “Well, you look good.”

After that exchange, Ellen presented Tim with a whole collection of Ellen underwear.  Tim was on the show to promote his new album, Two Lanes of Freedom, now in stores.

New License Plate Support Pets and Vets

kwch-jab-new-license-plate-lets-kansans-suppor-001Kansans can use their vehicles to show they support pets.

Revenue from a new “I’m Pet Friendly” license plate will be used to reduce the stray animal population. Proceeds from the sale of the plates will support scholarships for Kansas State veterinary students who will work with local animal shelters, particularly in spay/neuter programs.

With a one-time production fee of $45.50 and an annual donation of $50, the new plate can be picked up at county tag offices across the state.

The dean of Kansas State’s College of Veterinary Medicine, Ralph Richardson, says the program can help improve the quality of animal health throughout the state.

David Cardinal and Emilio Mitchell each signed their letter of intent today to play college football.

Food Insecurity in Ellis County

hunger summitOne in 6 Kansans, 15 % of the population, faces food insecurity–the lack of access, at times, to enough food for their  household.

In Ellis County the food insecurity rate is 12.1%,  or nearly 34-hundred residents.

The Center for Civic Leadership at Fort Hays State University is sponsoring a series of events this spring addressing the issue of hunger in Kansas.

Volunteer gathered Saturday to package 1600 “Bob Boxes” for senior citizens in 25 northwest Kansas counties.  The new program is funded by former U-S Senator Bob Dole of Russell.

Kansas Food Bank president Brian Walker, Wichita, says the free food boxes are available at the Ellis County Health Department.  “We’re look for seniors that won’t ask for help,” he says.  “We hear of  so many older people feeding their cat, the only family they have left, even when they don’t have enough food for themselves.”

Walker says about 96 “Bob Boxes” are distributed to Ellis County senior citizens each week.

New Technique Fortifies Ground Beef

Ground beefMANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – A Kansas State researcher has developed a technique that enriches ground beef with omega-3 fatty acids.

The enriched ground beef is named GreatO Premium Ground Beef. It is being sold through Manhattan-based company NBO3 Technologies LLC.

Kansas State says in a news release that it will be available mid-February at select retailers in Buffalo, N.Y. The plan is to expand to retailers and restaurants nationwide later this year.

Animal sciences and industry professor Jim Drouillard is credited with developing the technique for giving ground beef the same kind of heart-healthy fatty acids found in fish and plant oils.

Drouillard says a quarter-pound hamburger made of the enriched ground beef has 200 milligrams of omega-3s and tastes the same as regular ground beef.

Developer Requests Support for Tax Credits, RHID

Stonepost ApartmentsThe developer of the Stone Post Apartments on South Main in Hays is again seeking support for federal tax credits for a new development south of HaysMed. Overland Property Group’s Matt Gillam says the funding through the tax credits is less than in the past, and so to make up the gap, the developer is asking to also use a Rural Housing Incentive District.

Hays City Manager Toby Dougherty says the RHID is a valid economic development tool, and staff is developing a policy for its use.

The new development would include a 32 multi-family apartment complex with a clubhouse. The apartments would be income restricted. Overland Property Group applied for tax credits for a similar development last year, but was denied.

Next week the commission will consider a resolution of support for tax credits and a letter stating that the city will consider a RHID.

KHAZ Country Music News: Brantley Gilbert Auctioning Off Ram Truck to Benefit Iraq and Afghanistan War Veterans

khaz brantley gilbert 20130206You may never be able to chill out with Brantley Gilbert cruising down the road in his truck, but now you can at least own Brantley’s truck.  He’s been driving a 2012 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn for the past year, and that truck is now up for bid at Ebay.com/RoadtoRamJam as part of the Road to the Ram Jam All-Star Country Music Series.

Brantley made sure to take good care of the truck, though he tells ABC News Radio, “We’ve had it in a mud hole or two, and it’s done some donuts.  But it’s still in perfect condition.”

In order to keep the truck in great shape, Brantley wouldn’t allow smoking or dogs in the vehicle.

He says, “You know, I’ve got a pitbull.  I may or may not have kept that rule, but I hope I broke it in well for ’em.”

Proceeds from the sale of Brantley’s truck will go to the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, or IAVA.  That organization helps soldiers find work and education when they get out of the service, and Brantley supports military-related causes like this because of his cousin, who is currently serving as a Marine.

“I definitely, definitely support ’em,” Brantley says.  “I miss my boy too.  I’m ready for him to come home, so this is my way of kind of keeping in contact.”

Brantley is one of five country stars auctioning off their Ram trucks for a good cause.  Kellie Pickler raised more than $36,000 last week for the USO Warrior and Family Care program.  Billy Currington, Easton Corbin and Zac Brown Band are also taking part in the Road to the Ram Jam campaign.

Lawmakers Postpone Debate of Governor’s Tax Plan

StatehouseA Kansas Senate committee’s chairman has postponed debate on Republican Gov. Sam Brownback’s proposals to cut income tax rates and scrap two popular deductions for homeowners.

Chairman and Wichita Republican Les Donovan had said the Assessment and Taxation Committee would begin debate Tuesday.  But he acknowledged  that senators want more information about the governor’s proposals and are drafting amendments.

The debate may not begin until next week.

Senate Democratic Leader Anthony Hensley of Topeka said Republicans are floundering.

Brownback wants to further reduce income tax rates after aggressive cuts last year. But he and lawmakers must find revenue to stabilize the state budget.

The governor also wants to cancel a drop in the state sales tax scheduled for July.
