Opponents Petition to Block Opening of Abortion Clinic

abortion clinic wichitaAbortion opponents have delivered a rezoning petition with about 14,000 signatures to the Wichita City Council in a move to block the opening of a clinic at the building once owned by slain abortion provider George Tiller.

Kansans for Life plans to add hundreds more signatures and present them to the local zoning commission later this month. Petition organizer David Gittrich says residents don’t want an abortion clinic in the neighborhood.

The council asked staff to research the issue.

The abortion rights group Trust Women bought the building and plans to offer reproductive health care services, including abortions, at the site.

Their attorney, Robert Eye, says there is no legal basis that will justify rezoning the land. He says rezoning motivated by a political purpose is improper.

KSBE Member Says Arming Teachers Should Be Local Decision

arming teachersA member of the State Board of Education says arming teachers or guards in Kansas schools should be a local decision.

The Clay Center Dispatch reports Deena Horst addressed the issue during a weekend legislative forum in the north-central Kansas community.

Horst is a retired teacher from Salina who also served 16 years in the Kansas House.

She says she’s “personally fine” with having armed security in schools. But she believes it should be up to local districts to decide if they want to arm teachers or have armed guards in schools.

Horst also says the Board of Education has found that all districts have the opportunity to get some training with Homeland Security in Kansas, but only a few have done so.

KHAZ Country Music News: Tim McGraw Looking Forward to Long Road Ahead with “Two Lanes of Freedom,” Now in Stores

khaz tim mcgraw 20130205Tim McGraw‘s new album, Two Lanes of Freedom, is now in stores, and he hasn’t been this excited about releasing new music in a very long time.  For his past few albums, Tim has had to wait up to two years from the time he recorded his new music to the time it was released due to a legal battle with his former label, Curb Records.  Tim is now signed to Big Machine Records, and knowing his music would be released just months after he recorded it gave him a very positive outlook in the studio.

“I think the thing that we felt, and I felt more than anything, was knowing what was gonna happen afterwards  — that we had a plan,” Tim tells ABC News Radio.  “We didn’t have to sit on this music and not have to sit and worry about how it was all going to work.  So, there was a sense of optimism going in.”

That sense of optimism came into focus on the title track, “Two Lanes of Freedom,” which Tim recorded very early in the record-making process.

He says, “When we recorded that song, it sort of raised its hand and said, ‘This is what the record is going to revolve around.'”  Tim adds, “Every other song sort of just fed off of that song.”

In addition to the title cut and the current hit, “One of Those Nights,” Two Lanes of Freedom also features guest appearances from Taylor Swift and Keith Urban on the track “Highway Don’t Care.”  Getting Taylor, Keith and Tim in the same room at the same time proved to be impossible due to their crazy schedules, but modern technology allowed them to contribute their parts from three different studios at three different times.

“The modern ways of recording are so much better, so it’s so much easier.  So you just shoot a track over to somebody,” Tim explains.  “So, I shot it over to Taylor, and she went in the studio when she was working and laid her vocal down, and Keith did the same.  He was working and went in and laid his guitar track down.”

Though they weren’t all in the same room for the recording session, Tim says, “It couldn’t have turned out any better.”

Tim McGraw is making multiple TV appearances this week to promote Two Lanes of Freedom including a performance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Tuesday.  He stops by NBC’s Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Wednesday and ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday.

khaz reba mcentire 20121203Reba has been an open book with her fans for decades now, so it’s no wonder she’s comfortable playing what is pretty much a version of herself on her new show Malibu Country.  Reba stopped by Good Morning America Monday to chat about her role as single mom Reba Mackenzie saying, “What you see is what you get.  I am pretty much that character.  I try to raise my kids right.  I try to discipline ’em, just like in real life.”

Ogallala Aquifer Levels in Kansas Drop

ogallala-aquiferThe Kansas Geological Surveys says water levels in the Ogallala aquifer have dropped significantly in sections of Kansas since last year.

Rex Buchanan, interim director of the KGS, recently completed an annual tour of the 1,400 wells that tap into the Ogallala in western Kansas. He says overall levels in January 2013 dropped about 3 1/2 feet. Declines in January 2012 averaged 4.25 feet.

Buchanan told The Lawrence Journal-World that the water level declines were sharper in northwestern Kansas, which was especially dry in 2012. In southwestern Kansas, which saw a little more rain last year than the year before, the decrease wasn’t quite as severe.

In a normal year, the aquifer recharges at an annual rate of only about a half-inch, and even less during drought.
