Legislature to Consider “Made in Kansas” Bill

Handgun 005 TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – The Kansas House is considering a bill that would exempt firearms, firearm accessories and ammunition made in the state from federal regulations.

The “Made in Kansas” bill also would prevent physicians – other than psychiatrists – from asking patients if they have firearms in their homes.

The bill has 50 sponsors from both parties. Supporters say it is aimed at protecting both gun owners’ rights and states’ rights.

A similar bill introduced last session passed in the House but stalled in the Senate.

An initial hearing in the House Federal and State Affairs Committee is expected to be held next week.

The meeting is scheduled for Thursday evening at Garden City Community College. A final decision on listing the lesser prairie chicken as threatened under the Endangered Species Act is expected later this year.

Kansas has the largest concentration of lesser prairie chickens. The birds are also found in New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Colorado.

County Discusses Sales Tax Issues

Ellis County courthouseEllis County will pursue an interlocal agreement with the incorporated communities in the county to receive all proceeds from a sales tax to fund building construction and remodeling projects. However, while that is being done, the deadline to file bills with the Kansas Legislature will pass, and therefore, the county will still pursue a dedicated sales tax bill in case an interlocal agreement can’t be reached.

The City of Hays has indicated its willingness to turn over its share of sales tax to the county for the specified projects, but County Administrator Greg Sund says he hasn’t approached the other city councils yet.

The commissioners indicated that they would pull the legislation if an interlocal agreement can be approved. Commissioner Barbara Wasinger voted against going after legislative approval and wants to only pursue the interlocal agreement.

No matter which method the county ultimately uses, the sales tax would still be put to a public vote. The date for that election has not been determined.

Salina Hospital Becomes Level III Trauma Center

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASalina Regional Health Center’s trauma program has received Level III verification from the American College of Surgeons.

The Salina hospital has been working toward this designation for the past three years, according to a news release.

“This is probably the most difficult accreditation process for a hospital to achieve,” said Jake Breeding, M.D., trauma medical director.

Salina Regional’s efforts match those of a statewide initiative to have at least a level III trauma center in each geographical region of Kansas.

The trauma team consists of a trauma surgeon, emergency department physician, trauma nurse, intensive care nurse, surgical nurse and staff from radiology, laboratory, blood bank, respiratory care, security and chaplaincy.

Paramedics and doctors in the region have a dedicated line to call for traumatically injured patients, which sets off a cascade of alerts to people on the response team to report to the trauma suite in the emergency department.
