Yoder Holds Agriculture-Related Position

Kevin YoderWASHINGTON (AP) – Kansas congressman Kevin Yoder is the new vice chairman of the U.S. House Appropriations subcommittee on agriculture.

Yoder’s appointment was announced Thursday by Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers, a fellow Republican from Kentucky.

Yoder is in his second term representing the Kansas 3rd Congressional District, which covers most of the Kansas City metro area. He chaired the Kansas House Appropriations Committee before being elected to the U.S. House in 2010.

His latest appointment gives Kansas a voice in congressional oversight of farm programs and policy.

Last month, another Kansas congressman – Republican Tim Huelskamp – was removed from the House Agriculture Committee by GOP leaders angered by his positions on issues. Huelskamp represents the largely rural 1st District of western and central Kansas.

State Brings in More Revenue than Expected

Money-Dollar-Sign-002TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Kansas revenue officials say the state collected $62 million more in taxes than expected in January.

A preliminary report Thursday from the Department of Revenue says January’s tax collections totaled nearly $635 million – almost 11 percent above an official forecast for the month.

The report also says the state collected about $3.7 billion in the first seven months of the current fiscal year. That’s $95 million more than officials had expected.

January’s larger-than-expected collections are likely to dramatically shrink the projected $267 million gap between anticipated revenues and current spending commitments for the fiscal year that starts July 1st.

KHAZ Country Music News: Kenny Chesney to Release New Album, “Life on a Rock,” Due Out April 30

Kenny Chesney (BNA)It seems like Kenny Chesney‘s world keeps getting smaller and smaller judging by his recent album titles.  His last project, Welcome to the Fishbowl, was named for a song all about having to deal with people in your business via Facebook or, in Kenny’s case, through the tabloids.  Now he’s turning his focus back to the small town ways of the people on an island with his new album, Life on a Rock, due out April 30.

Kenny wrote eight of the 10 songs on the album, and the project celebrates the friends he has made living in the Caribbean for the past few years.  Those people may be boatmen, bartenders, waitresses or real estate agents, but they all welcomed Kenny into their unhurried way of life.

He says, “They took a country singer from East Tennessee into their tribe at a time when having friends outside everything I knew was important. Time passes, life moves on, but those friends lasted, and this album in a lot of ways is about the power of that kind of friendship to endure.”

The first single from Life on a Rock is “Pirate Flag.”  The new project also includes a collaboration with Willie Nelson and was recorded everywhere from Jamaica to London to Hawaii to Nashville to Key West.
