Senator Roberts: No Lew

Screen Shot 2013-02-26 at 11.17.37 AMU.S. Senator Pat Roberts a senior member of the Senate Finance Committee, today voted against the confirmation of Jack Lew, the President’s nominee for U.S. Secretary of the Treasury.

During today’s Senate Finance Committee hearing, Roberts discussed how Mr. Lew’s responses to questions about the Obama Administration’s rhetorical war against the General Aviation tax credit and his tenure on Wall Street failed to meet the mark.

After the hearing Senator Roberts released the following statement:

“Mr. Lew’s failure to answer the most basic questions about his investments in offshore accounts or his tenure on Wall Street was deeply disturbing.  Most startling to Kansans, however, was Mr. Lew’s inability to explain this Administration’s hypocrisy with regard to general aviation.  At campaign stops, President Obama repeatedly decries general aviation as a tool for  ‘corporate fat cats,’ but in response to questions, Mr. Lew acknowledges these aircraft are used by lower level employees to increase efficiency and to facilitate key business functions. Mr. Lew himself benefitted from increased efficiency of General Aviation when he worked in the private sector.  As our economy continues to struggle, the top post at Treasury is immensely important and with regret, I don’t believe Mr. Lew is the best fit for this post.”

Wichita, Kansas has long been considered the “Air Capital of the World.”  A world leader in general aviation manufacturing, this industry contributes over $7 billion a year to the Kansas economy and employs thousands of Kansans both directly and indirectly.  Repeated attacks by the Obama Administration and efforts to penalize the industry could cost thousands of jobs.

Mall Cleanup Continues

A tenant at the Hays Mall suffered damage during last week’s big snowstorm. Foxy Nails, according to their phone message, remains temporarily closed from water damage. The damage, according to other Mall tenants, was a result of a broken water pipe. The water may have also contributed to roof damage above the nail salon.

The Mall office had no comment on the extent of the damage. They did tell Hays Post that the rest of the Mall is open for business.

KHAZ Country Music News: George Strait Receiving Big Honor in Nashville Tonight; Going for 60th #1 Hit of His Career

khaz george strait 20121210George Strait adds another big honor to his trophy case Tuesday night. King George has been selected to receive the Career Achievement Award at the Country Radio Hall of Fame ceremony in Nashville.

The honor comes as George’s team has launched the “60 for 60” campaign to help secure the 60th #1 hit of his career while George is still 60-years-old. The song they’re promoting to pull that feat off is “Give It All We Got Tonight,” the lead single from George’s upcoming studio album. The campaign collects all of George’s chart toppers from various country songs charts since he hit the country scene more than 30 years ago to come up with that figure.

You can find out more about Team George’s efforts at SixtyforSixty.com. Carrie Underwood, Dierks Bentley and Blake Shelton are among the stars paying tribute to George in a new YouTube video posted on that site as well.

George is also on the road with his The Cowboy Rides Away tour, which will be the last major tour of his career. That doesn’t mean George is finished making albums though.

“I still really enjoy singing, and that’s really who I am,” says George. “I mean, I love to fish, and I love to do all these other things. But my love has been and still is country music and singing. So, for as long as I can keep doing it, that’s what I’m gonna do.”

After he receives the honor from the Country Radio Broadcasters, George is set to take the stage Friday night in Knoxville, TN.

It’s America Saves Week!

K-State Research and Extension           February 25 – March 2 is America Saves Week– an annual opportunity for organizations to promote good savings behavior and a chance for individuals to assess their own saving status.
This week, start small but think big with these suggestions from K-State Research and Extension and the Consumer Federation of America:
           • Start (or add to) an emergency fund. An emergency fund is your protection against unexpected expenses or job loss.
           • Track your spending. Knowing how you and your family spend money can help identify areas to reduce spending and increase saving.
           • Let go of bad habits and bank your savings. Find one or two spending habits to cut back on and bank the difference.
           • Take advantage of free money at work. Many employees turn down free money from their employer by not signing up for a work-related retirement program.
           • Go automatic! Pay yourself first by setting up automatic transfers at your financial institution from your checking to savings account or having a portion of your paycheck directly deposited into your savings. Savers who save automatically are more likely to be successful long-term.
For more information on saving, contact the Ellis County Extension Office or visit www.kansassaves.org.

Community Corrections Programs Help Reduce Jail Crowding

jail barsNorthwest Kansas is the only community corrections agency in the state with a bond program. The program was put in place in 2007 to help with jail overcrowding, and since then, Director John Trembley says nearly 550 offenders have been released on bond supervision.

While Ellis County still has to jail inmates out of county, allowing some out on bond while waiting for trial, saves the county about $1,200 a month. Trembley says 90 percent of the offenders on bond were eventually sentenced to community corrections.

Northwest Kansas Community Corrections also provides a methamphetamine treatment program, started in 2002. To date there have been 201 addicts in the program.

Trembley says meth is one of the biggest drug problems confronting his department. He says the laws restricting pseudoephedrine have cut down on labs in the area, but the supply is still there.

A 10% Budget Cut at FHSU?

Should Fort Hays State University take a 10% Budget Cut? A state representative from Newton wants FHSU and all Universities in Kansas to consider taking a budget cut.

The House Appropriations Committee on Monday endorsed Gov. Sam Brownback’s higher education budget, but several committee members voiced disapproval about spending levels at public universities.

Appropriations Committee Chair Marc Rhoades, R-Newton, asked why higher education couldn’t take a 10 percent cut?FortHaysState Rarick

Rep. Ward Cassidy, R-St. Francis, who chaired the education subcommittee, said the committee felt the universities were doing a good job. He added, “The governor stressed not to touch higher education.”

Brownback’s budget essentially keeps higher education funding flat with several enhancements, including $10 million over two years to help build a medical education building at the Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City Kan.

County Fair Discussion at State Capitol Today

It is snowy cold February. However, state legislators are discussing your county fair today.  A Senate Bill that would transfer the recognition of county fair associations from the secretary of agriculture to the board of county commissioners is on the House agenda for this afternoon.Ellis Co Fair

The bill would allow county fairs that received recognition from the Secretary of Agriculture prior to July 1, 2013, to remain recognized as an official county fair, unless such recognition is revoked by the board of county commissioners in the county where the county fair is to be located.  And you thought they weren’t doing anything important in Topeka.

Kansas Schools Could Be Hurt in Federal Sequester Cuts

Gov. Sam Brownback is back in Kansas from the National Governors Association meetings in Washington where he and a few other governors met with the President.  The President wants Governors to ask their Congressional delegations to compromise on the budget in an effort to avoid the so-called sequester.

The $85 billion in automatic federal budget cuts scheduled to be triggered Friday would trickle down to Kansas by taking $5.5 million from K-12 schools, furloughing 8,000 civilian defense workers and undercutting aid for child vaccinations.

Imposition of across-the-board reductions at the national level would occur under the sequester absent a brokered deal between the President and Congress. school-342x228-150x150
