Beer Lovers: Bud Cheats

Beer lovers across the U.S. have accused Anheuser-Busch of watering down its Budweiser, Michelob and other brands, in class-action suits seeking millions in damages.

1276305_beerThe suits, filed across the country claim consumers have been cheated out of the alcohol content stated on labels. Budweiser and Michelob each boast of being 5 percent alcohol, while some “light” versions are said to be just over 4 percent.

The lawsuits are based on information from former employees at the company’s 13 U.S. breweries, some in high-level plant positions, according to lead lawyer Josh Boxer of San Rafael, Calif.

“Our information comes from former employees at Anheuser-Busch, who have informed us that as a matter of corporate practice, all of their products mentioned (in the lawsuit) are watered down,” Boxer said. “It’s a simple cost-saving measure, and it’s very significant.”

The excess water is added just before bottling and cuts the stated alcohol content by 3 percent to 8 percent, he said.

Anheuser-Busch InBev called the claims “groundless” and said its beers fully comply with labeling laws.

“Our beers are in full compliance with all alcohol labeling laws. We proudly adhere to the highest standards in brewing our beers, which have made them the best-selling in the U.S. and the world,” Peter Kraemer, vice president of brewing and supply, said in a statement.

Kansas Reading Initiative Rejected

A Kansas Senate committee has narrowly rejected a proposal by Gov. Sam Brownback to hold back third-grade pupils who aren’t able to meet the state standard for reading.

The 6-5 vote Tuesday means the bill remains in the Senate Education Committee, where its prospects for the remainder of the session are uncertain.

Brownback’s plan would have barred promotion to fourth grade for third-graders who fail to read at a proficient level on state tests. The bill also included a grant system for early education programs aimed at boosting reading skills.

Opponents of the bill questioned its impact on students and the lack of parental involvement in the decision to hold students back a grade. Others say school districts already have the authority to retain students.in/post-new.phpBooks

Brownback the Most Unpopular Governor?

A new survey by  Public Policy Polling suggests that Sam Brownback is one of the most unpopular Governors in the country. Only 37% of Kansas voters approve of him to 52% who disapprove. He meets with near universal disapproval from independents (22/66) and Democrats (14/81), but what really drives his numbers down is that even among Republicans just 55% approve of him to 30% who disapprove. Brownback’s signature proposal for phasing out the income tax may be part of what’s bringing him down. Just 37% of voters support it with 48% in opposition.

Generally a Governor with Brownback’s approval numbers would be trailing for reelection. But Republicans have a more than 20 point party identification advantage in the state, and Democrats don’t have a particularly long bench. The one Kansas Democrat who is universally well known- former Governor Kathleen Sebelius- has seen her popularity decline as a result of serving in the Obama administration. 44% of voters in the state see her favorably to 47% with a negative opinion.

The surveybrownback looked at 5 other Democrats besides Sebelius but none of them has more than 32% name recognition- Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer and former Governor Mark Parkinson are both at 32%, Kansas City Mayor Joe Reardon is at 28%, 2010 nominee Tom Holland is at 27%, and Shawnee County DA Chad Taylor is at 20%.

So despite his unpopularity, the Republican lean of the state and the low profile of the Democrats we tested still allows Brownback to lead every potential match up we looked at. He’s up 4 points on Brewer at 44/40, 5 on Sebelius at 48/43, 6 on Parkinson at 45/39, 7 on Holland at 45/38, 9 on Reardon at 45/36, and 10 on Taylor at 44/34.

The Democrat leads by at least 17 points with independents in all six of these match ups, but that’s still not enough to overcome the strong Republican lean of the state’s electorate. Nevertheless Brownback is stuck at the 44-45 mark in all of these match ups except the one against Sebelius so if Democrats nominate a strong candidate and they build up their name recognition they should at least have a shot in this race next year.

Thousands Gather for Pope’s Final General Audience

Pope 3VATICAN CITY (AP) – Pope Benedict made several rounds of St. Peter’s Square in a triumphant farewell as crowds cheered wildly for the retiring pontiff.

Tens of thousands of people toting banners saying “Grazie!” – “thank you” in Italian – jammed the piazza for the pope’s final general audience – the appointment he has kept each week to teach the world about the Catholic faith.

Benedict is the first pope in 600 years to resign.

Fly Hays: Great Lakes Airlines Tries to Answer Concerns

Passengers with tickets to fly out of Hays on Saturday afternoon were disappointed. They were ready to travel and were told the flights were cancelled. Some passengers were reportedly told of “mechanical problems.” Were these mechanical problems with airplanes or snow removal equipment?

Chuck Howell, a spokesperson for Great Lakes Corporate Office in Cheyenne, Wyoming, told Hays Post, ”The reason the flights were cancelled was due to a 4’ snow bank adjacent to taxi ways” Howell said their airplanes had difficulty with the snow banks at Hays Regional Airport in the past and had been notified early Saturday of large piles of snow. He did not know why local Great Lakes staff were not informed.  Tyler, who answers the phone for Great Lakes at Hays Regional Airport told Hays Post on Saturday that the flights were cancelled because runways were not clean. Great Lakes reservation agents on Saturday were still booking flights out of Hays. They had not been informed that flights were cancelled.

There were other flights in and out of Hays Regional Airport this weekend. “Randall Buchanan with Hays Aircraft told Hays Post that those flights were private aircraft, late in the day on Saturday. The smaller private aircraft have the right to use runways if they believe it is clean enough to use and the airport is not officially closed,” he said.Great Lakes Airlines

Commercial aircraft are required to follow different rules and flight regulations than smaller aircraft. Hays Public Works Director ID Creech told Hays Post in an email that Public Works Crews were scheduled to do work at the airport on Saturday.  Stay tuned to Eagle Radio and check back to Hays Post for more information as it becomes available.

TMP Boys Fall to Minneapolis, End Season

TMPFOYS: Minneapolis 47, TMP-Marian 41
TMP-Marian fell behind early on Monday night and could never fully recover, losing to Minneapolis 47-41 in the first round of Class 3A Sub-State play.  The Monarchs trailed by 6 at the end of the 1st Quarter and battled back to take a 17-16 lead midway through the 2nd Quarter.  That would be the first and only time TMP led the entire game as they trailed by 6 at the half.

The Monarchs were able to get the game back to a 1 point contest going into the 4th Quarter but TMP could never crawl over the hump.  A couple of Sophomores led the way for their respective teams, Kameron Schmidt with 12 for TMP and Josh  Macy with 25 for Minneapolis.  TMP finishes their season at 8-12.

KHAZ Country Music News: Kenny Chesney Is Top Country Music Money Maker According to “Billboard”

khaz kenny chesney 20130226Billboard magazine has released their list of Music’s Top 40 Money Makers of 2013, and quite a few country artists made the cut. Kenny Chesney ranked highest among country stars at #5 thanks to an estimated $19 million payday thanks in large part to his Brothers of the Sun tour with Tim McGraw, who ranked 7th with an estimated $18 million coming in.

Jason Alden also made the top 10, coming in at #8 with $17.6 million from touring and music sales. Lady Antebellum‘s Own the Night World Tour helped them pocket an estimated $13 million for the 12th spot, while Brad Paisley took in $12.85 million for a #14 ranking. Taylor Swift was 15th with $12.7 million, but that number will be much higher next year once revenue from her upcoming Red tour is factored in.

Carrie Underwood ranked 16th with just under $12 million. Eric Church was 18th with $11 million coming in, and Rascal Flatts came in at #19 with a $10.8 million payday. Toby Keith took 23rd with $9.8 million, and Miranda Lambert‘s $8.8 million haul put her at #27. Zac Brown Band earned an estimated $6.7 million, and Blake Shelton was 40th with more than $5.9 million.

There are a few factors to note with these numbers. Billboard‘s rankings are calculated using estimated artist earnings based on touring stats, album and single sales and streaming data. The rankings don’t include money from sponsorship or merchandise deals due to lack of substantial data.

Madonna topped the list with $34.6 million from her blockbuster MDNA tour.
