May Cost More to Hold Tournaments at Fort Hays Course

golf-ball1The Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course Advisory Committee has endorsed increasing tournament fees.

The group and Parks Director Jeff Boyle say marshals are needed during tournaments and other high usage times to keep play moving and enforce the course rules. The proposal was made last week to the city commission, and Commissioner Ron Mellick says improvements to the course need to be protected.

The proposal would increase fees $50 for a nine hole tournament and $100 for an 18 hole tournament.

Also under consideration is lower greens fees for juniors to encourage golfers who are 17 and under to play.

The commission will consider both at this week’s meeting.

Hays PD on Teen Seat Belt Use

seat-beltThe Hays Police Department along with other law enforcement agencies and the Kansas Department of Transportation are trying to increase the usage of seat belts among teenagers. Police Sergeant Dan Koerner says there will be enhanced enforcement March 11th through the 22nd.

Despite efforts to educate teens about seat belt use, this age group continues to have some of the lowest rates. During the two-week period, there will be an increased law enforcement presence in Hays enforcing all traffic laws, but especially seat belt laws.

State Board of Ed Looking at Science Instruction

The Kansas Board of Education will get an update this week on school-related legislation and an effort to develop new standards to guide science instruction in the state.

School - Classroom 001The board is meeting Tuesday in Topeka, then moves Wednesday to state schools for blind and deaf students in the Kansas City area.

Several education-related bills are under consideration in the Legislature, including one that would make it easier to open charter schools.

The board has been receiving regular updates on science standards, even though a final vote isn’t expected until at least May. Kansas and 25 other states are working on common standards for possible adoption in their public schools.

Past work on science standards in Kansas has been overshadowed by debates about how evolution should be taught.

J.C. Penny Cutting More Jobs; Good and Bad News

First the bad news: J.C. Penney Co. announced this weekend they are eliminating an additional 2,200 jobs as the struggling department store chain aims to slash more costs after a year of plunging sales and mounting losses. The Mall Outside 2

The good news: Rebecca Evinger, manager of the J.C. Penny Store in the Mall in Hays told Hays Post, ” The job cuts will not affect the Hays store. We are not eliminating any positions. We have a lot of new merchandise arriving and are excited about serving Hays and the region.”
According to Joey Thomas, a company spokesman,  the cuts translate to an average elimination of two positions per store.

The cuts come as J.C. Penney finishes a full year of snowballing losses and steep sales declines. A strategy launched early last year by CEO Ron Johnson to scale back most sales has failed to resonate with shoppers.

Johnson said last week that since coming on board in November 2011, the Plano, Texas-based company has cut 19,000 jobs.

Gay Newspaper Rips Huelskamp

The Washington Blade refers to itself as America’s leading Gay News Source. It has published a demeaning report on Kansas Congressman Tim Huelskamp. The article discusses Huelskamp’s latest effort to protect anti-gay service members and to prohibit same-sex couples from marrying on military installations.

“Rep. Tim HuelskampScreen Shot 2013-03-11 at 6.03.39 AM who was elected during the Tea Party wave of 2010, introduced legislation known as the Military Religious Freedom Protection Act  or H.R. 914, on Thursday.

The legislation has two parts. The first states that the religious and moral beliefs of service members and military chaplains concerning human sexuality won’t be the basis of adverse personnel action or discrimination in the armed forces. The section section states chaplains may not be forced to perform a rite that is contradictory to their religious teachings, which would include same-sex marriages.

The second section states that a military base can’t be used for any marriage or marriage-like ceremony other than the union of one man, one woman.

Huelskamp is known for pushing anti-gay legislation in the House. Last year, on the same day that President Obama endorsed marriage equality, Huelskamp  amended major funding legislation on the House floor to reaffirm the Defense of Marriage Act.

Just last month, Huelskamp criticized “employment rules” that would “specifically and selectively reward homosexual behavior” during an interview on an anti-gay radio show, identifying it as a “radical” idea that most Americans don’t support — despite polling showing the vast majority of people support such protections.”

FHSU Left Out of NCAA Tournament Field

FHSU-MBB-TeamEven though they were co-champions of the regular season in the MIAA, the Fort Hays State men’s basketball team was left out of the eight-team Central Regional field of the 64-team NCAA Tournament. The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference received four bids, while the MIAA and Great American Conference received two each.

Fort Hays State finished 20-8 overall, but mysteriously fell from eighth in the region rankings on February 20 to ninth the next week, to out of the top 10 entering the MIAA Tournament. Advancing to the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament was not enough to get the Tigers in this year, even though they reached 20 wins in a season for the seventh time under head coach Mark Johnson, which ties for most in school history with Bill Morse.

Central Missouri, co-champion of the regular season with FHSU, earned the automatic bid from the conference by winning the MIAA Tournament. Northeastern State received the other bid, even though it finished 19-8 overall and tied for third in the MIAA regular season. The Riverhawks lost in the quarterfinals of the MIAA Tournament.

Most baffling is the fact that two at-large bids were handed to a pair of 11-loss teams, Upper Iowa from the NSIC and Arkansas Tech from the Great American Conference. Arkansas Tech finished in a three-way tie for the GAC conference regular season title, but the champions of that conference were 13-7. FHSU and Central Missouri were 13-5 in conference play. Arkansas Tech had three non-conference losses outside its conference tournament, while FHSU had just two. All of Fort Hays State’s losses were to teams over .500, most being well over .500.
