FHSU Women’s Run at NCAA Tournament Comes Up Just Short

FHSU-WBB-HuddleFort Hays State’s run at obtaining a NCAA Tournament bid came up just short as the Lady Tigers were left out of the eight-team Central Regional field for the 64-team NCAA Tournament. Even with a 22-7 record overall, 20-7 in Division II play, it was not enough to get the Lady Tigers into a very tough regional field.

Washburn, Central Missouri and Emporia State will represent the MIAA in the tournament field. Three teams from the NSIC and two from the GAC also will compete at the regional. The Lady Tigers made a run to the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament, losing to Central Missouri in overtime, but it was not enough to obtain an at-large bid. Emporia State is the only team in the Central Regional field with more than six losses, but got in with the automatic bid by winning the MIAA Tournament.

The 22 wins this season for FHSU were most for the program since 2004-05. It also marked the most wins for FHSU in a season under fifth-year head coach Tony Hobson. That passes the mark of 20 wins set last season. The Lady Tigers had two All-MIAA selections in first-teamer Kate Lehman and third-teamer Kate Edward. Lehman was also named the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year and landed on the MIAA All-Defensive Team.

School Lawsuit Mediator Named Today?

A lawyer involved in a Kansas education funding lawsuit says the parties expect to disclose as early as today school-fundingwhether they can agree on a mediator for settlement talks.

Newton attorney John Robb confirms the parties hadn’t filed anything with the Kansas Supreme Court on who they’d prefer as mediator by a Friday evening deadline. The high court has ordered mediation.

The court has a conference call on scheduling set for Monday, and Robb said the issue of the mediator should be addressed then.

Robb represents several school districts and parents who sued the state over education funding in 2010.

A lower-court panel ruled in January that legislators must boost the state’s annual spending on public schools by at least $440 million. The state appealed that ruling.

Memorial Fund Established for Longtime FHSU Professor

George Wall was known as a father, a husband, a professor of business at Fort Hays State University, a pool shark, and as an avid fisherman and hunter. George was married to Margaret Hardgrove Wall and passed away last July Fhsu entranceat the age of 82.

In 1958 George saw an ad for an instructor position at Fort Hays State University. As an accountant, he had never before considered teaching, but decided to pursue the position and met with the head of FHSU’s business administration program, Leonard Thompson. After being hired by Thompson, George proceeded to spend his entire career teaching at Fort Hays State. After 35 years of dedicating himself to his students, George retired as a tenured professor of business in 1993. In 1999, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Kansas Society of Public Accountants in recognition of his long service as an accounting educator in the state of Kansas. Although George had a reputation for being a tough professor, he was always well respected and wanted the best for his students.

“When I think of my time at FHSU, pursuing a degree in business and studying accounting, I recall the positive impact that Dr. George Wall had on my CPA career” said Steve Baumrucker. “He was definitely a favorite instructor of mine. Dr. Wall maintained a very serious academic atmosphere and yet at the same time created a relaxed and interesting experience in his classes. Dr. Wall had a love for hunting, fishing and enjoying the outdoors, which created a natural relationship with many students. Dr. Wall contributed much to my success and to the success of many others.”

With the help of family and friends, a memorial scholarship fund has been created in honor of George Wall. Margaret commented that George “loved teaching and he was really good at it. He would be very pleased to have a scholarship in his name.” Contributions toward this scholarship fund will not only recognize an amazing professor, but will also provide financial assistance to FHSU students for years to come.

“George Wall is an icon in the Fort Hays State University accounting department” said Galen Pfeifer. “George was undeniably a favorite of mine. His classroom environment was intense but always included a hunting story or a ribbing of one of the students. George’s deep voice and big grin were characteristics that kept students’ attention in his classroom. He was definitely a positive influence on me, and my CPA career. Even after years of being out of his classroom, he would call me by name and take the time to update. George contributed much and is missed.”
