KHAZ Country Music News: Jason Aldean Just Isn’t Cut Out for Reality TV

khaz jason aldean 20130212Jason Aldean is at the top of his game right now selling out stadiums and arenas on his Night Train tour. Though he took a small acting role in the film Sweetwater this year, fans don’t have to worry about Jason straying too far from the concert stage.

He says, “At the end of the day, I’m a musician. That’s what I am, and I don’t really want to be anything other than that.”

That means Jason isn’t going to judge or participate in a reality show any time soon either. He’s seen what being a coach on The Voice has done for his pal Blake Shelton‘s career, but that kind of gig just isn’t for him.

“I never say never on things,” Jason explains. “I think you’ve got to take certain situations as they come. You know, so it’s hard to say. That show that Blake’s on, I’m sure nobody knew that that thing was gonna explode the way it did.”

The kind of time it takes to be on a reality show isn’t worth it for Jason.

He says, “I would be miserable if I wasn’t out on the road playing my shows. If I had to sit in a building and I had to focus more on doing a show like that versus going out and playing my shows live. I just, I wouldn’t be happy doing that.”

Jason’s live concerts are one of the many reasons he’s up for ACM Entertainer of the Year, and fan voting in that category is now underway at VoteACM.com. Jason will perform on the 48th Annual ACM Awards Sunday, April 7 on CBS.

Northwest Kansas Community Recovers from Murder Trial, Conviction

The Northwest Kansas town of Oberlin is still  trying to recover. A rare murder trial, the first in ten years, ended on Wednesday with a conviction of 25  year old

Dylan Coryell. “I’m so glad the trial is over,” courtroom photographer Stephanie DeCamp told Hays Post. “It was very stressful.” The trial was scheduled for ten days and was finished in seven days. “He will be sentenced on June 17 and we’ll have him down the road a day or two later,” Decatur County Sheriff Ken Badsky told Hays Post.

Coryell was convicted of fatally shooting another man and wounding a woman as the couple slept.

Witnesses testified Coryell had recently begun a relationship with the woman, who survived the shooting.

Prosecutors said both men had been drinking and exchanging hostile text messages in the hours before the killing.

Sheriff Badsky said that Coryell will move from Oberlin to the Norton Correctional Facility and then to the prison at Eldorado.

Brownback Sees Gay Marriage As Settled Issue In Kansas

Government anti gay

AP – Gov. Sam Brownback still supports a federal law against gay marriage that he backed as a member of Congress and says the issue is settled in Kansas because of the state constitution’s ban.

Brownback faced questions Thursday from reporters with two cases on gay marriage before the U.S. Supreme Court. Brownback has long supported the traditional definition of marriage.

In one case, the high court is being asked to strike down a gay-marriage ban in California enacted by voters. The other case is a challenge to the federal Defense of Marriage Act of 1996.

Brownback voted for the federal law while in Congress.

He said the issue is resolved in Kansas because in a 2005 election, nearly 70 percent of voters approved a state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

First Look 2013 Wheat Crop

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The USDA is releasing its first estimate of the 2013 crop size in its spring planting report.USDA logo

After a year dominated by worst drought since the 1950s, farmers are looking ahead to the next crop. Some analysts are expecting slightly more corn and soybeans to be planted than a year ago.

Farmers planted 97.2 million acres of corn last year, the most since 1937. Some analysts are expecting corn acres at around 97.5 acres.

Darrel L. Good, an agriculture economics professor at the University of Illinois, says more acres are available for planting because farmers enrolled 2.6 million fewer acres in the conservation reserve program last year.

Thursday’s USDA report is based on about 80,000 farmer surveys and is the first indication of planting intentions for this year.

Kansas Governor Says His Sales Tax Plan Fits With Budget

brownback

AP – Gov. Sam Brownback says the reality of funding the state budget will push Kansas lawmakers toward approving his proposal to cancel a scheduled decline in the state sales tax.

Brownback said Thursday that legislators have limited options for stabilizing the budget while they seek further cuts in individual income tax rates.

Brownback hopes to follow last year’s income tax cuts with additional reductions over the next four years.

The Senate has embraced both that idea and keeping the sales tax at 6.3 percent instead of letting it fall to 5.7 percent in July as scheduled by law.

The House wants to let the sales tax drop and cut income taxes less aggressively. Olathe Republican Scott Schwab says few of his fellow House members support keeping the sales tax where it is.

KHAZ Country Music News: Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert’s Marriage Is an Open Book

khaz blake shelton 20130328Blake Shelton doesn’t worry that his wife Miranda Lambert will believe tabloid rumors that he’s cheating on her. The couple has an open book policy in their marriage, literally: either one of them can go through and read the other’s texts and e-mails at any time.

“That’s the kind of trust we have,” Blake tells People Country. “There are no secrets. Go dig through my drawers or my phone or my computer if you feel like you need to. I have nothing to hide. And it’s been a really good thing because I don’t want her to ever have any doubt.”

As for talk of Blake and Miranda having a baby, Blake says that still a ways off, though he admits, “I do think if and when it happens, I’ll be pretty happy about it.”

For more insight into Blake’s life, pick up the new issue of People Country, out Friday.

Eyeballs Found In Trash At Kansas Gas Station

eye.jpgAP — Police say they are trying to determine how a medical box containing a pair of eyeballs ended up in a trash bin at a gas station in Kansas City.

Police spokesman Steve Young says a worker at a Conoco station in the city’s north called police after finding the cardboard box late Wednesday. The box was labeled, “Keep refrigerated.”

Young says police aren’t sure if the eyes are human, or whether any crime has been committed. Surveillance video shows two men in a blue Toyota leaving the package on the trash bin.

Police say no eye banks or hospitals in the area were awaiting delivery of any eyeballs.

The Jackson County Medical Examiner’s office is holding the package while the investigation continues.

Using Water More Efficiently

water smart seriesOne of the new initiatives for the city of Hays to use water more efficiently kicked off Tuesday night.

The first in the “Water Smart Landscape Series” drew a number of homeowners to the K-State Ag Research Center where they learned about soil health, fertilizer and pesticides.

The remaining three presentations will address how to choose the right plants for this climate and putting the plants in the right place; how to use water wisely; and how to convert lawns to warm season grasses which use less water.

The free series is sponsored by the Ellis County Extension Office, Ellis County Master Gardeners, the city of Hays, and the KSU Big Creek Middle Smoky Hill River Watersheds.
