Free Pizza Hangs In The Balance For Shockers Fans

Screen Shot 2013-03-28 at 12.38.07 PMPizza Hut officials are promising a gift for Wichita State fans if the Shockers win the NCAA basketball tournament.

The company says it will reopen its original restaurant on the Wichita State campus the Thursday after the NCAA tournament championship and feed the campus – if the Shockers capture the title.

Wichita State plays La Salle Thursday night in the regional semifinals.

Pizza Hut spokesman Doug Terfehr says thinks a Wichita State championship is possible, saying, “The Cinderella, I think, is going to carry it all the way this year.”

The first Pizza Hut opened in 1958 in Wichita and was moved in 1986 to the Wichita State campus.

Because the Shockers are seeded ninth, the chain also would offer a $9 pizza deal for those who sign up online.

KHAZ Country Music News: Kimberly Perry Warns Luke Bryan to Keep His Camo Undies Away from Blake Shelton

khaz luke bryan kimberly perry 20120719Luke Bryan is set to co-host the ACM Awards with Blake Shelton April 7, and this marks the first time Luke has co-hosted a major, live awards show. He co-hosted last summer’s CMA Music Festival special with Kimberly Perry though, and she thinks he has what it takes for that big job.

Kimberly tells ABC News Radio, “I mean, the guy’s never met a stranger, and Luke certainly has a huge personality.”

While Kimberly has no doubts about Luke’s hosting skills, she warns him that he needs to be a little tidier backstage at the show. While they were getting ready to do some interviews promoting the CMA Music Festival, Luke made quite a mess in the common area between his and Kimberly’s dressing rooms.

She says, “Luke’s clothes were kind of strewn all out in the middle space, including his camouflage underwear. I’m not sure why he wasn’t wearing them, but they were on the floor.”

Kimberly adds, “I just want to remind him to please put those away, because I don’t know that Blake Shelton will be as forgiving on stage about that as I was.”

The 48th Annual ACM Awards will be handed out live from Las Vegas Sunday, April 7 on CBS. Look for The Band Perry’s sophomore album, Pioneer, in stores next week.

GOP Leaders Show Strong Support for Roberts

Senator Pat RobertsTopeka, KS – Senator Pat Roberts today unveiled his honorary statewide campaign committee led by co-chairs Governor Sam Brownback and U.S. Senator Jerry Moran.

“Kansas needs Pat Roberts, now more than ever,” said Governor Sam Brownback. “He is our champion, our senior statesman, our Senator. I am honored to be on Pat’s team.”

“No one fights for Kansas and Kansans harder or more effectively than Pat Roberts,” said U.S. Senator Jerry Moran. “I am honored to be on Pat’s team and look forward to continuing our work together to put Kansas first.”

Elected Republican leaders from across the state on the honorary committee are:

  • First District Representative Tim Huelskamp
  • Second District Representative Lynn Jenkins
  • Third District Representative Kevin Yoder
  • Fourth District Representative Mike Pompeo
  • Lieutenant Governor Jeff Colyer
  • Secretary of State Kris Kobach
  • Attorney General Derek Schmidt
  • State Treasurer Ron Estes

“I am proud to endorse Senator Pat Roberts for re-election to the United States Senate,” said Congressman Tim Huelskamp. “Pat Roberts embodies Kansas with his determination to fight for our state at every turn. We need Pat’s toughness in the Senate to fight Barack Obama’s liberal agenda. I fully support my mentor and friend, Pat Roberts, for re-election to the United States Senate.”

“Senator Roberts continues to be a powerful and effective voice for Kansans in the U.S. Senate,” said Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins. “When he speaks for us, Washington listens.”

“Senator Roberts continues to fight for our Kansas values,” Congressman Yoder said. “Kansans need Senator Roberts’ leadership in the United States Senate now more than ever to stand strong against a liberal agenda that spends too much, raises taxes and never balances a budget. Senator Roberts has shown he can deliver for Kansas, and I’m honored to support his campaign for re-election.”

“I’m excited to serve as an honorary member of Senator Roberts’ campaign for re-election,” said Congressman Mike Pompeo. “Senator Roberts has been a strong advocate for Kansans, providing leadership and experience to a Congress that badly needs more of it. Here’s to another six years.”

“It is an honor to have the support of my colleagues all across the state and federal levels,” Roberts said. “We have a strong team for Kansas, and together we send a powerful message to liberal Democrat special interests that our united front is unbeatable.”

Pat Roberts, from Dodge City, is the Senior U.S. Senator from Kansas. Roberts’ successful 2008 campaign has been widely credited as the foundation for the increase in Republican registration in Kansas. That historic momentum was built upon with the leadership of Governor Sam Brownback during the 2010 Clean Sweep victories and continued in 2012 as Republicans across Kansas are enthused about a bright future for Kansas and America.

Senate Approves New Caps To Unemployment Benefits

Screen Shot 2013-03-28 at 8.52.30 AMThe Kansas Senate approved a bill that would change the length of time Kansans can receive unemployment compensation.

The bill approved Wednesday links the compensation to the state’s jobless rate, and raises the surcharge employers pay into the unemployment trust fund.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports the bill would allow Kansans to claim unemployment for the current standard of 26 weeks only when the jobless rate is above 6 percent. That would drop to 20 weeks if the unemployment rate was 4.5 percent to 6 percent. Benefits would stop at 16 weeks when the rate was under 4.5 percent.

Supporters say the changes would motivate people who are out of work to find jobs. Opponents argued many unemployed people need the benefits to support their families.

Gun Rights Advocates Winning in Topeka

The Kansas Senate has approved a bill expanding the number concealed carry
of public buildings where concealed weapons are allowed and letting public
school and college employees carry concealed firearms.

The 35-5 vote Wednesday sends the measure to the House.

The bill backed by gun-rights advocates comes as federal officials consider new
gun-control measures following a deadly mass shooting at a Newtown, Conn.,
elementary school in December.

The House already has approved its own version of the same measure, allowing
local school boards and state colleges to designate employees to carry concealed weapons.

Also, state and local governments couldn’t prohibit holders of state
concealed-carry permits from bringing their weapons into public buildings unless those places had security measures. Officials would have until 2018 to get those security measures in place.
