New Abortion Provider Ready for Business

abortion clinic wichitaA new women’s clinic that offers abortion services is set to open in Wichita next week.

The clinic is in the same building that was once run by slain abortion provider Dr. George Tiller.

The founder of the South Wind Women’s Center told KWCH-TV it’s “highly likely” the clinic will open next Wednesday, March 27.

Doctors will perform abortions at the clinic, as well as other gynecological services.

Wichita-based anti-abortion group Operation Rescue says it was unaware of the scheduled opening, but promises protests like those when Dr. Tiller was there.

The group also says it will continue working to use legislation to shut the facility down.

Study: Kansas Could See Rise In Health Claims Costs

health
AP – A new national study says Kansas could see an increase of nearly 19 percent by 2017 in medical claims costs for individual insurance policies under the federal health care overhaul.

That’s better than the nationwide figure of nearly 32 percent forecast by the Society of Actuaries study.

Kansas legislators from both parties said Wednesday they’re not surprised some costs could rise under the 2010 federal health care law championed by President Barack Obama.

Medical claims costs are a major driver of health insurance premiums.

The study assumes all states expand Medicaid coverage under the federal health care law. Kansas hasn’t made a decision on that issue, but many Republican legislators oppose an expansion.

Northwest Kansas Man Found Guilty of Murder

jail barsOBERLIN – (March 27, 2013) – An Oberlin man was found guilty today of intentional second-degree murder, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said.

A Decatur County jury found Dylan R. Coryell, 25, guilty on charges of intentional second-degree murder and aggravated battery. The charges stemmed from the October 2011 death of Corey Cook, 22, also of Oberlin, and a related injury to a woman. The jury also found two aggravating factors in the case which will be taken into account during sentencing.

Judge Preston Pratt scheduled sentencing for June 17 at 10 a.m.

Assistant Attorney General Nicole Romine of Schmidt’s office and Assistant Decatur County Attorney Margaret P. Mahoney prosecuted the case. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation worked with local law enforcement officers from the Oberlin Police Department and Decatur County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation. Schmidt commended the investigators and prosecution team for their work and thanked the jury for their service.

Look Out Above, and Below!

earthworm castsThe “weather guy” at K-State Ag Research Center-Hays, Joe Becker, added a little trivia note to his official report today.

“Tonight, (Wednesday) enjoy viewing the full Worm Moon! According to the Farmer’s Almanac, the native tribes of what is now the northern and eastern U.S. named this the Worm Moon after the earthworm casts (excrement) that appear as the ground thaws.

“We can only hope!”

We at Hays Post feel certain Becker is hoping for a ground thaw, and not piles of casts.

KHAZ Country Music News: Miranda Lambert Tackles Those “Annoying” Tabloid Rumors About Her Marriage to Blake Shelton

American Country Awards 2011 - Backstage And AudienceMiranda Lambert and Blake Shelton are country’s hottest couple right now, which means their marriage is of great interest to the tabloids.

Miranda says, “It’s funny, ’cause we’ve reached that point where people say, ‘You’ve really made it when you’re in the tabloids.’ It’s like, ‘I guess we’re famous, hon! Cheers!’ It’s kind of annoying.”

In the past few weeks, Blake has been accused of infidelity in the tabloids, and the couple has used Twitter and humor to make light of those rumors. Miranda says, “According to this week, I’m divorced. And I think I’m gonna be pregnant again next week according to the media. Crazy people. But I’m actually doing great. We’re very happy.”

Blake and Miranda will celebrate their two-year wedding anniversary in May, but they aren’t expecting a little bundle of joy to go along with that milestone.  Miranda explains, “I’m not pregnant. I just got fat over the holidays. Just a couple of cheeseburgers extra.”

In the meantime, Miranda is gearing up for the release of her second album as a member of Pistol Annies. That project, Annie Up, is due out May 7, featuring the new single “Hush Hush.” Miranda is also headed to the top of the country chart with her solo hit, “Mama’s Broken Heart,” from her album Four the Record.

Overcrowding and Safety Issues Plague Ellis County EMS Building

ems cpr trainingEllis County EMS has outgrown its Hays headquarters in a building purchased in 1990.
There’s not enough room for the 40 total employees, student trainees, 8 emergency vehicles, EMT living quarters, patient transport records, training equipment, medical supplies, and office supplies.
“Our fifth ambulance and mass casualty trailer are parked in another building  for which we pay $800 a month rent, ” says EMS Director Kerry McCue.  “We have to go to a third building to retrieve patient transport records.”
State law requires ambulances and similar vehicles be parked indoors.
A half-cent county wide sales tax will be voted on May 14 which would in part, fund a new combined EMS/Rural Fire building.

“With Rural Fire we can share one facility with a dedicated training room, which would reduce costs to taxpayers,” McCue says.

EMS Training Director Lillian Slater constantly shifts around the training equipment.  “Some of it is cluttering our lobby, some of it is kept at Hays Medical Center, and I even store some in my house and garage, ” she says.  “All that back and forth is hard on the equipment.”

McCue invites the public to tour the current facility and see the “crowded conditions” and “safety issues” for themselves.

“This new building is not a Taj Mahal.  It is what we need, ” he says.

Watch Eagle Local News ECTV Channel 14 tonight/tomorrow as Becky Kiser tours EMS headquarters with McCue.

First Bill to Become Law in 2013 Session

brownback court of appealsThis morning Kansas Governor Sam Brownback signed into law the first bill of the 2013 legislative session.
The law changes the way the judges of the Court of Appeals are selected. Under the new system, the Governor will appoint someone to a judicial vacancy and the Senate must confirm them.

Currently, Appeals Court judges are nominated by the Supreme Court Nominating Commission which is made of five members elected by the Kansas Bar,  and four members appointed by the governor.

HB 2019 allows the governor to appoint a qualified person to fill any vacancy of the Appeals Court who is subject to approval by the Kansas Senate.  Known as the federal process, this procedure is similar to how justices for the United States Supreme Court are appointed.

Drug Test for Welfare Check Approved

url(AP) – The Kansas House has approved a bill that would require unemployment and welfare recipients to undergo drug testing.

Under a bill passed Tuesday on a 106-16 vote, anyone who fails a drug test would have to get drug treatment and job skills training, paid for by the state and federal government. Those who fail a second time would lose assistance for a year.

The bill also would prevent anyone who is convicted of a drug felony after July from getting welfare for five years. A second conviction would mean a lifelong ban.

House and Senate members also would be tested if there is a reasonable suspicion about their behavior.

The Wichita Eagle reports the Senate has approved the bill but will consider some minor changes in the House version.
