Does the State Anti Abortion Measure Go Far Enough?

Kansas may get the same kind of abortion restriction that was signed into law Tuesday by Gov. Jack Dalrymple in North Dakota.Abortion 001

The Kansas Senate is preparing to take up legislation blocking tax breaks for abortion providers. But some lawmakers want to go further by pursuing a ban on most abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected _ the same language that now is law in North Dakota.

The measure on the Senate’s agenda for debate not only deals with tax exemptions and credits for abortion providers but bars them from providing materials or instructors for sex education classes in public schools.

It also includes a statement that life begins at fertilization and is worth protecting. The measure has passed the House.

A House committee heard testimony Tuesday on banning most abortions after a doctor can detect a fetal heartbeat, which can happen as early as the sixth week of pregnancy.

KHAZ Country Music News: Blake Shelton Kisses the Blues Goodbye on “Based on a True Story…”

khaz blake shelton 20130212Blake Shelton chose to name his brand-new album Based on a True Story… because he’s either lived through or is currently experiencing the emotions found in every song on the project.  If you take a listen to those songs, it’s pretty obvious Blake is loving life these days.  He’s about to celebrate his second wedding anniversary with Miranda Lambert, and his career is on a roll thanks to his latest hit “Sure Be Cool if You Did.”

When asked about the mostly happy and romantic song selections on the new album, Blake says, “It was just my mindset, I think, overall.”  He adds, “I’m very content with my life, which, I mean, who wouldn’t be?  I know how lucky I am.  I’ll be happy if it stays like this for a long time.”

There are a few sad songs on Based on a True Story… because this is still a country album, but Blake isn’t wallowing in that melancholy vibe like he has in the past.

“I’ve had those years where I made those type of records, and I don’t want to, but probably will have them again,” Blake explains.  “Something will happen one of these days, and it’ll be a part of my music.  Right now, it’s just everything’s pretty awesome.”

As for the album title, Blake worked to come up with something creative since he didn’t want to just name it after a song on the album.

He says, “I listened to it, and I finally just thought, ‘Man, this kinda is my life from start to finish.’  I just thought, ‘That’s what we’ll call it. We’ll just say it’s Based on a True Story.'”

The new single from Based on a True Story… is “Boys ‘Round Here,” featuring Miranda Lambert’s group Pistol Annies on background vocals.

House Approves Bill To Require Stem Cell Research

Screen Shot 2013-03-27 at 8.45.51 AM(AP) – The Kansas House has approved a bill that would require the University of Kansas Medical Center to start a center to promote research and use of adult stem cells, cord blood and related stem cell therapies.

The bill would prohibit the center from using embryonic stem cells or cells taken from aborted fetal tissue. It also would require the medical center to appoint a director of the center to oversee patient treatment and research.

However, the bill does not include any state funding for the proposed center. The Lawrence Journal-World reports the Midwest Stem Cell Therapy Center would require $1.1 million to renovate a lab and hire staff and $750,000 annually after that.

Third Escapee Sentenced

MINNEAPOLIS – The third of four inmates who escaped from state custody in April 2012 was sentenced Tuesday to more than 11 additional years in prison for aggravated escape from custody, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said. The inmates were housed by the state at the Ottawa County jail at the time of their escape.

Alberto Barraza-LujanAlberto Barraza-Lujan, 24, was sentenced to 136 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections by Judge Patrick Thompson in Ottawa County District Court. Barraza-Lujan pleaded guilty to the escape charge in January. Thompson ordered the sentence to be served consecutive to the 136 months Barraza-Lujan is still serving for previous convictions, the sentence for which he was incarcerated at the time of his escape.

Two defendants were previously sentenced on related charges in connection with the April 2012 escapes. Eric James was sentenced in July 2012 to 18 years in federal prison for carjacking charges related to the escape. Drew Wade was sentenced last week to 136 additional months after pleading guilty to aggravated escape from custody. A fourth defendant, Santos M. Carrera-Morales, is charged by the attorney general with aggravated escape from custody and battery on a corrections officer. He is awaiting trial. The charges against Carrera-Morales are merely accusations; he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

Kansas Lawmakers To Begin Talks On Tax Legislation

Kansas capitol(AP) – Kansas legislative negotiators are beginning work on the final version of a bill cutting individual income taxes.

Three senators and three House members planned to start their talks Wednesday. They’ve been appointed by legislative leaders to reconcile differences between their two chambers.

The legislation would follow up on massive income tax cuts enacted last year. Republican Gov. Sam Brownback and many GOP lawmakers would like cut personal income tax rates further, but the governor and legislators also must stabilize the budget.

The Senate embraced Brownback’s proposals to guarantee further income tax rate reductions over the next four years while canceling a decrease in the sales tax scheduled by law for July.

The House approved a plan allowing the sales tax to drop and cutting income taxes less aggressively.

Astra Bank Shred Fest

Screen Shot 2013-03-22 at 5.26.15 PMOfficials at Astra Bank will be holding another Shred Fest event, on Saturday, March 30th.

“As everyone is aware, identity theft is a critical issue today,” said Astra Bank’s Bryan Armendariz. “One of our top priorities at Astra Bank is doing all we can to ensure the highest security for our customers’ financial accounts, and we don’t think that security should stop at our front doors. The Shred Fest is a way we can help our customers and everyone else protect themselves.”

“Each year, nearly every household accumulates a great deal of personal financial and health documents, all of which need to be disposed of in a secure manner,” Armendariz continued. “To help people decide which of their documents to destroy, we’ve developed a ’What and When to Shred‘ schedule.”
Armendarez said Astra Bank recommends the following guidelines for deciding what documents to shred and when to shred them:
• Bank Statements – Shred after the account is reconciled.

• Credit Card Statements – Keep one tax year’s worth.
• Monthly Bills – Shred anything older than one year
• Tax Records – Keep the last seven years

“These guidelines are only a general recommendation. An individual’s circumstances may dictate they keep certain records longer. Astra Bank suggests a person use their own discretion when deciding what and when to destroy personal documents,” Armendariz said.

There is no charge for having documents destroyed at the Shred Fest. Any individual may bring up to three bags or containers of personal documents to be destroyed. Staples and paper clips do not need to be removed prior to shredding. The actual document shredding at the Shred Fest is performed by an AAA-Certified shredding company. Anyone who wishes to view the destruction of their documents may do so.
The Shred Fest takes place at Astra Bank at the following times:
• Hays location, 1100 Fort Street, 8:00 – 10:00 am, March 30
• Plainville location, 113 W. Mill, 11:00 am – 1:00 pm, March 30

“We hope everyone will help safeguard themselves from identity thieves by taking advantage of this free service,” Armendariz added.
