KHAZ Country Music News: Eric Church Gets Caught in the Act: Live

khaz eric church 20130410When you listen to Caught in the Act: Live for the first time, Eric Church wants you to know that the CD is just what the name implies — a spontaneous musical event.

“We made this set list for this live record an hour before show time with a pencil and a piece of paper,” he recalls of the recording last October. “I just went out and looked at the band. I said, ‘What do you guys want to play tonight?’ There was no rhyme. There was no reason. It was about the music. We left the lights up so that people, I could see ’em. They could interact with me.”

In addition to hits like “Smoke a Little Smoke,” the 17-song CD also includes concert favorites like “These Boots” and “Before She Does.”

After it was done, Eric says he was anxious to listen to the recording of his show at Chattanooga’s Tivoli Theatre.

“I’m always nervous about live records because I have some that I adore, and I have some that I’d just rather buy the regular record,” he admits. “So, for me, it was a sigh of relief when I heard it, and I realized that that energy was there and that feeling was there that we wanted to capture.”

Eric’s first live album makes it debut in stores and online today.

110th State Representative Travis Couture-Lovelady reported on his Facebook page today that almost 200 people showed up for Tuesday night’s gun rights forum with five area county sheriffs, including Ellis County Sheriff Ed Harbin.

“We talked about the needs of our jail, the 2nd amendment and there were a lot of good questions,” Harbin told Eagle News. “People are concerned about what the Federal government might do on gun issues. It was very informative.”  State Representative Sue Boldra was also in attendance.

The event was held at Thirsty’s Brew Pub in Hays and sponsored by the Big First Tea Party.

Sheriffs from Rooks, Rush, Trego, and Russell County also participated.

Huelskamp Demands Answers From DHS Secretary

Tim Huelskamp flag For more than six months, a growing number of news media outlets, as well as the constituents of numerous Members of Congress, have been asking questions about the ammunition purchase practices of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).  In February 2013, Congressman Tim Huelskamp (R-Kansas) joined 16 other Members of Congress in signing a letter, addressed to Secretary Janet Napolitano, that seeks more information about this matter.

That oversight letter was transmitted to the Homeland Security Department nearly four weeks ago.  As of the close of business on Tuesday April 9th, Congressman Huelskamp has not yet received a written response from Secretary Napolitano or an Assistant Secretary on her behalf.  The letter asked the following questions:

1.       For what purpose is the Department of Homeland Security purchasing nearly two billion of rounds of ammunition?

2.       How many rounds of ammunition does Homeland Security currently have in its stockpile?

3.       Is the current level of ammunition purchases by the Department in line with previous levels of ammunition purchases made by the Department?

4.       In response to inquiries into these purchases, why has the Department redacted, blacked out, or classified certain sections of its solicitations that had been previously available to the public?

5.       Are these purchases being conducted in a manner that strategically denies the American people access to ammunition?

6.       How much has Homeland Security spent purchasing ammunition within the last year when it was clear the Department was likely to face a budget cut? Please include planned expenditures for current bid solicitations in this figure.

Congressman Huelskamp issued the following statement:

“I want to give Secretary Napolitano every benefit of the doubt, but this inordinate delay is inexcusable.  I hope this foot-dragging isn’t the latest example of the executive branch trying to evade transparency and flout congressional oversight.  I reiterate my request that the Secretary answer these straightforward questions, answer them truthfully and completely, and do so in a timely fashion.”

Despite Recent Moisture, Burn Advisory Issued for Kansas

burning fieldThe Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Kansas Interagency Wildfire Council are together issuing a burn advisory due to persistent drought conditions across Kansas.

While the past few weeks have brought an increase in moisture to the area, it has not been enough to create safe conditions for outdoor burning. Continued drought conditions combined with  high wind speeds, low relative humidity, and other weather factors will produce unsafe conditions for burns this season.

“If possible, we encourage delaying burning for another year so that the conditions for safely burning fields or brush will not be as likely to produce fires that burn out of control and put lives and property at risk,” says Doug Jorgensen, State Fire Marshal.

In cases in which prescribed burning is essential this year, the OSFM and Kansas Interagency Wildfire Council offer the following tips and best practices to help ensure a burn doesn’t become a wildfire:

  • Know all state and local fire restrictions. Check with county officials who are charged with deciding whether burning is permissible based on local conditions.
  • Notify neighbors as a courtesy prior to burning.
  • Postpone the burn if unsure of the fuel and weather conditions.
  • Have adequate resources and equipment available to prevent escaped fires.
  • Consider smoke management to avoid unsafe roads and air quality conditions.
  • Do not burn to the ends of the field. Setting boundaries, “back burning” and keeping the fire off of fence rows will prevent out-of-control burns.

Kansas experienced extreme fire behavior in 2012, with more than 41,000 acres burned and 26 structures lost from wildfire by the end of summer.

A Wide Variety of Spring Weather

Western Kansas has seen a wide variety of weather over the past 24 hours. Ellis County has had hail, rain, high winds, ice, and a dusting of snow.

We have had reports of swirling clouds, severe weather warnings, winter storm watches and more. There have also been record low temperatures in parts of the state.

Garden City’s temperature of 19 degrees on Tuesday tied a record from 1973. There have also been reports of downed trees limbs and power lines in McPherson and  Hutchinson…and there are reports of problems with ice on power lines this morning in Salina.

There have been no tornadoes, but there was rotation reported in clouds around the state on Tuesday. I-70 was closed from Goodland to the Colorado line for a time on Tuesday night due to blowing snow. It is open this morning. However, roads across the region have slush, are icy and slick. We will have moisture totals available later this morning.

Former Kansas Coach To Be Retried on Sex Charge

images(AP) – A former high school football coach will be retried on a charge of electronic solicitation of a child arising from a sting operation.

The retrial for former Garden Plain coach Todd Puetz is scheduled for June 24.

A Sedgwick County jury on Monday could not reach a verdict on the solicitation charge. The jury acquitted Puetz of two other charges. He was one of seven men arrested in October 2011 in the operation aimed at men soliciting sex from minors.

District Attorney Marc Bennett said Tuesday the court automatically placed the Puetz case back on the jury trial calendar, which it does whenever a case ends in a mistrial.

He faces up to five years in prison if convicted of the soliciting charge.
