Gun Legislation Moving Slowly

gunKansas legislators are making slow progress on two gun measures that are expected to win approval from solid gun-rights majorities in the House and Senate.

Votes on the bills had been expected Thursday, but members spent much of the day drafting and reviewing final versions. House and Senate leaders now expect final action Friday.

One bill declares that the federal government has no power to regulate guns, ammunition and accessories that are made, sold and kept exclusively in Kansas. The measure would make it a felony for a federal agent to enforce restrictions on such items.

The other proposal would let public schools and state colleges arm employees with concealed weapons. Also, schools, colleges and local governments couldn’t ban concealed guns in buildings unless they had security measures in place.

KHAZ Country Music News: Brad Paisley Bringing Country’s Past to the Present with His ACM Awards Performance

khaz brad paisley 20130404Brad Paisley brings country’s past into the present using a sample of the late Country Music Hall of Fame member Roger Miller‘s 1964 hit “Dang Me” in his new song “Outstanding in Our Field.”  He also recruited Dierks Bentley to contribute vocals, and Hunter Hayes plays guitar on the track which will be included on Brad’s new album, Wheelhouse, coming out next week.

Fans watching the ACM Awards will get to see this collaboration come to life on Sunday night’s show, and Roger will be in on the act too.

Brad tells ABC News Radio, “When we do it live, you’ll see in black and white Roger Miller behind me come up on the screen.  You’ll see that on the ACMs this week, where there he is.  He’s doing his line, and then Dierks comes in the next verse, and Hunter plays guitar and all this.”

Brad has always prided himself on being a steward of country music’s history, and he feels this collaboration takes that role to a new level.

“Now you really have the technological ability to not just build on the past and take all of these things I learned from Roger Miller being a fan, but I get to sing with him because of technology,” Brad explains.

There are some legal issues behind the scenes over whether or not Brad can actually sample Roger Miller’s records, but he says, “The copyright lawyers get to figure it all out.  Which is fun, I don’t care.”

Brad Paisley hosts the ACM Fan Jam this Sunday night at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.  Portions of that show, including the performance of “Outstanding in Our Field,” will be shown on the ACM Awards broadcast on CBS starting that night at 8 Eastern.

BIG Things Happen During the “BIG Event”

THE BIG EVENT SHIRTBig things were happening around Hays  Thursday, thanks to the Fort Hays State University Student Government Association.

SGA Legislative Affairs Coordinator Chris Roberts says,  “the ‘Big Event’ offers FHSU students the chance to give back to this community and say thanks for their support throughout the year.”

More than 250 student volunteers participated in several different service projects, including interior paintwork at ACCESS Transportation headquarters, reading to elementary school students, and working in the Victor E. Garden on campus.

In 1982, Texas A&M University started the Big Event as a way to say thank you to the community. Other schools have adopted the same idea, including Fort Hays State, now in its third year.

Jail - Prison - Bars 004TOPEKA, KAN.  – A Topeka woman has been charged with trying to pick up a seven-pound package of methamphetamine at a post office, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said today.

Maria DeSocorro Martinez, 41, Topeka, is charged with one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. The crime is alleged to have occurred March 18, 2013, in Shawnee County, Kan.

Martinez initially was charged in a criminal complaint filed March 19, 2013, in U.S. District Court in Topeka.         If convicted, she faces a penalty of not less than 10 years and not more than life and a fine up to $10 million. The Drug Enforcement Administration investigated. Assistant U.S. Attorney Greg Hough is prosecuting.

Opinion: Huelskamp Speaks at Hutchinson

Submitted by R.D. Fry

Tim Huelskamp was the guest speaker at the Patriots Freedom Alliance monthly meeting on Tuesday April 2, 2013 in Hutchinson KS. His speaking was more of a pretext for the good members of the PFA to present him with an award for and to express their sincere appreciation of the Congressman’s steadfast support of conservative principles.

I was invited to the event and under orders from the Patriot Coalition’s (PC) National Director to attend. The PC has been following the Congressman since his opposition to the citizens detention provisions of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2012. He was only one of a handful who did so. The only Congressperson from Kansas to do so.

Congressman Huelskamp spoke sincerely but frankly about the situation he faces in (and we face from) Washington. I think for the most part he simply confirmed what most Kansans already know at some level. One could not help but feel his frustration and perhaps a hint of sadness.

The Executive Branch is not letting Congress know about what it is doing militarily. Imagine your Congressman having to find out from the news that the U.S. military was attacking Libya. Imagine the Executive not telling Congress if it had active military excursions into other areas of the world. Imagine its refusal to explain why it has purchased 1.6 billon rounds of operational (versus training) ammunition for homeland use over the last two years. (This is over a three hundred year supply.) Then there are the fiscal issues…very, very big fiscal issues.

As most informed patriots know Congressman Huelskamp paid a price for defending our Bill of Rights and being a fiscal hawk. He along with three other Congressmen were removed from their key committee appointments by Republican House Speaker Boehner and his henchmen. The only common factor between Huelskamp and Justin Amash (Michigan), Walter Jones (North Carolina) and David Schweikert (Arizona) was that they all have resisted the citizen detention provisions of the NDAA and they are all fiscal hawks.

Before the elitists / globalist Republican leadership started to recreate the GOP in a “moderate” image these were key principles of Republicans. Now they are key principles of conservatives but the Republicans are quickly abandoning them. The GOP’s new motto might well be reflected in Boehner’s statement “we are sent here not to be something, but to do something…” Apparently they are not sent to be “conservatives” but to comprise conservative principles.

I think the PFA and the Big One Tea Party of Hays as with most First District citizens are proud that Congressman Tim Huelskamp does stand and stand steady for something called conservative values. One could feel the admiration and pride coming from the crowd Tuesday.

Since the NDAA 2012 was passed Huelskamp and only a handful of Congressman have sought to fix these unconstitutional provisions that eviscerated over half of the bill of rights. He made our list. I was proud to present him with an certificate which read:

PATRIOT COALITION
TRUE SON OF LIBERTY
CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION

For upholding your oath of office to defend the Constitution of the United States,
for consistently voting against attacks on the Bill of Rights, for defending free-market principles and fiscal responsibility, and consistently demonstrating the admirable character traits of a true sun of liberty in the face of ongoing intolerable acts.

For the sake of Liberty,

Richard D. Fry
General Counsel

Abortion Clinic Reopens in Slain Doctors Building

WICHITA, Kansas (AP) — A new clinic offering abortions and other medical services to women has opened in Wichita nearly four years after Dr. George Tiller was large_George-Tiller-abortion-clinic-060609murdered.

The South Wind Women’s Clinic saw its first patient Thursday in the building where Tiller practiced. The building was purchased by the abortion rights group Trust Women Foundation.

The group’s spokeswoman, Kerry Townsend Jacob, cited privacy rights in declining to say whether its first patient, a Wichita woman, had an abortion or some other service.

The clinic opened uneventfully on Wednesday but did not have a patient scheduled until Thursday.

No abortions have been performed openly in Wichita since the death of Tiller, who was one of the nation’s few doctors performing late-term abortions. He was gunned down at his church by an anti-abortion zealot in May 2009.
