MW Energy: Transmission Pole Fire Update

Tower Pole fire 2503 Marjorie
Tower Pole fire, 2503 Marjorie, Sunday 3/31/13

It may have been lightning from a thunderstorm that rolled through Ellis County. However, Midwest Energy says they are not exactly sure what caused the early Sunday morning transmission pole fire.

Midwest Energy spokesman Mike Morley told Hays Post, “The pole fire near Sternberg at 3:17 a.m. cut electricity to less than 500 homes. Work crews opened a breaker at a substation to repair the problem and had power restored before 6 a.m. Later this week they will replace the pole and won’t have to turn off power to make the change.

KHAZ Country Music News: The Band Perry Offers a Sweet Treat to Go with Their Upcoming Album, “Pioneer”

khaz the band perry 20130215The Band Perry‘s new album, Pioneer, comes out Tuesday, but that’s not the only sweet treat the group is offering their fans. The Perry siblings have also collaborated with Nashville bakery Gigi’s Cupcakes on a new cupcake, called The Very Perry Chocolate Cherry. The cherry flavor is a nod to a line in the song on Pioneer titled “I’m a Keeper,” in which the girl in the song wants to change her name to Cherry.

The Band Perry’s Kimberly Perry tells The Tennessean, “I’ve always wanted Cherry to be my name. That girl in The Outsiders, Cherry Valance, she’s always been one of my favorite heroines in literature. So the cupcake was named after the song and we got to taste test.”

After tasting a few options, The Band Perry and Gigi’s owner, Gina Butler, decided on a white cupcake sweetened and colored with maraschino cherry juice and filled with chopped cherries. Mounds of chocolate frosting and a cherry top it all off. The cupcake will be available on Fridays and Saturdays at Gigi’s Cupcakes starting soon.

KHAZ Country Music News: Brad Paisley Explains Why He Named His New Album, “Wheelhouse”

khaz brad paisley 20130308Brad Paisley lifted the title of his new album, Wheelhouse, from a line in his latest #1 hit, “Southern Comfort Zone,” which is all about getting out of your wheelhouse, or your comfort zone.  As he continued working on the new project, Brad became taken with that concept.

“I started thinking about that as a thing that encompassed what I was trying to do,” Brad explains, “which was the comfort zone being the strike zone — the area where you’re at your most effective.  And our goal with this album was to challenge what is that and to figure out if I can operate outside of that.  ‘Cause I would have never been comfortable doing some of these things early on.”

Brad is referring to the experimentation with new sounds and recording methods he used while making the album. As he continued working on the project and explored the world outside of his proverbial wheelhouse, he decided that particular word would be a great album title.

Says Brad, “”I love that term, ‘wheelhouse,’ and I don’t think there’s been any albums called Wheelhouse.  That feels like, you know, it should have been an REO Speedwagon album or a Van Halen album.  You know, the new album from Van Halen, Wheelhouse!”

Wheelhouse also includes Brad’s latest single, “Beat This Summer,” as well as collaborations with everyone from Dierks Bentley and Hunter Hayes to rapper/actor LL Cool J and Eric Idle of Monty Python fame.  The project hits stores April 9.

State Facing a Shortage of Court Reporters

Court-gavelHUTCHINSON, Kansas (AP) — Kansas court officials say up to 25 percent of the state’s court reporters will be eligible to retire in the next three years, leaving a big gap in courthouses.

Many of the state’s current 132.5 court reporters are older, and even more are expected to retire in the next five to 10 years.

Court reporters type the official record of legal proceedings, using a series of complex letter combinations to record up to 225 words per minute with 95 percent accuracy.

The Hutchinson News reports that Butler County Community College and the Court Reporting Institute of Kansas City are the only two schools in Kansas that offer training for court reporters.

The Kansas Court Reporters Association says it’s encouraging its members to promote the field to young people.

New Type of Dental Providers Not Coming to Rural Kansas This Year

Lawmakers aren’t acting on a proposal to allow a new type of dental worker to perform routines services in underserved areas.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that two bills have languished in House and Senate committees without hearings. The bills would allow for a mid-level dental provider to do about 30 basic dental procedures. Those procedures include “nonsurgical extraction” of diseased permanent teeth that are already loose.

The providers would be licensed dental hygienists who pass a clinical exam, have practiced for 500 hours under the direct supervision of a dentist and purchase liability insurance. Advocates note that there is a shortage of dental care in many Kansas counties.

But the Kansas Dental Association has objected, raising concerns about safety and the creation of two levels of care.dentist-150x150

Kansas Locations Among Best College Towns

The “college experience” is about more than simply attending a top-notch university. The city or town where the school is located also is important according to the American Institute for Economic Research (AIER) today from results in its 2012-2013 “AIER College Destinations Index” (AIER CDI).  Among factors considered are student diversity, unemployment rate, degree attainment and earnings.  Lawrence, Kansas came in at # 8 and Manhattan was #14. Legislators Back to Work in Topeka

TOPEKA, Kansas (AP) — Kansas legislators return from a long weekend determined to push through tax legislation, new restrictions on abortion, gun-rights legislation, the bulk of the next state budget and every other bill of any significance in just five days.

Republicans leaders have pledged that lawmakers will finish almost all of the year’s work by Friday, breaking with their standard practice over the past quarter-century, to shorten their annual session. But to make good on the pledge, some tricky and contentious issues will have to be resolved quickly.

The biggest piece of the puzzle is how to resolve differences on taxes and whether a 2010 sales tax increase is allowed to expire in July as scheduled or remains in place to shore up the state’s $14 billion budget for 2014.

Kansas Senate Taking Up Sweeping Anti-Abortion Bill

Screen Shot 2013-04-01 at 6.14.35 AM(AP) – Abortion opponents expect the Kansas Senate to approve a bill this week to block tax breaks for abortion providers and to bar them from participating in public school sex education classes.

The bill on the Senate’s agenda Monday already has passed the House. Supporters hope senators won’t make any changes so that a vote to pass it will send it to Republican Gov. Sam Brownback, who opposes abortion.

The Senate has a solid anti-abortion majority.

The bill would prevent abortion providers from claiming tax credits and exemptions available to other groups and health care providers. Also, a woman couldn’t include abortion expenses if she deducts medical expenses from her income taxes.

The legislation also would prohibit abortion providers from providing materials or instructors for sex education classes in public schools.
