Across US and in Kansas, people rally for ‘Justice for Trayvon’

ZimmermanPeople have rallied in dozens of U.S. cities, urging authorities to press federal civil rights charges against a former neighborhood watch leader in Florida who was found not guilty in the shooting death of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin.

The Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network organized the “Justice for Trayvon” rallies and vigils on Saturday in at least 101 cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Wichita, where a group demonstrated one block away from the Wichita State University campus.

One week after a jury found George Zimmerman not guilty in the 2012 shooting death of Martin in a gated central Florida community, people gathered nationwide on Saturday.

The Florida case has become a flashpoint in national debates over self-defense, guns, and race relations.

Zimmerman, who successfully claimed that he was protecting himself when he shot Martin, identifies himself as Hispanic. Martin was black.

Hemingway’s Early Life Now Available Online

(AP) — Scrapbooks that chronicle author Ernest Hemingway’s childhood from diapers to high school will be made publicly available online for the first time.

The JFK Library and Museum in Boston has digitized pages from five scrapbooks that the mother of the Pulitzer and Nobel Prize winner made to document his early life.

Hemingway Collection curator Susan Wrynn says the fragile volumes have been in a vault for decades.

She says much of the content hasn’t been made available to the public before, and only a few researchers have seen it in its entirety.

On Sunday, Hemingway’s 114th birthday, hundreds of pages will go online at https://www.jfklibrary.org

Sean Hemingway tells The Associated Press he’s sure there are clues within the scrapbooks to the writing talent his late grandfather showed as an adult.

Three-Run Sixth Ends Goza’s No-Hit Bid

Larks starter Nick Goza retired the first 17 batters he faced, taking a perfect game and 2-0 lead into the sixth inning of their game with Derby Saturday night at Larks Park, but the Twins struck for three runs in the sixth and defeat the Larks 3-2 to even their three-game series at a game a piece. The Larks fall to 28-11 overall and 20-10 in Jayhawk League. The Twins improve to 15-19 overall and 13-18 in the league. The two teams wrap up the series Sunday night at 7pm.

Sunday night’s game can be heard on KAYS (1400-AM) and www.hayspost.com.

Goza retired the first two batters in the sixth, but a rushed throw by Jake Placzek on a chopper to shortstop allowed the Twins their first baserunner. The Twins scored their first run on a Jason McMurray single that was just fair down the right field line. Casey Scott’s two-out RBI double scored two to give the Twins the lead which they would hold the rest of the way.

Goza went ht distance, striking out three and walking one. Aaron Cornell had three hits and an RBI for the Larks.

Woman’s Six Flags roller coaster death UPDATE

roller coaster7:10  p.m. update (AP) — An Arlington police sergeant says a woman who died while riding a roller coaster at a Six Flags amusement park in North Texas fell from the ride.

Sgt. Christopher Cook told The Associated Press on Saturday that police believe the woman fell Friday at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, and that there appears to have been no foul play.

He says police, fire and emergency medical services responded to the park around 6:45 p.m. Friday in reference to a woman who had fallen from a train car while riding a roller coaster. He says she was pronounced dead at the scene.

She had been riding the Texas Giant. Dubbed the tallest steel-hybrid coaster in the world, it reaches 14 stories high, drops 79 degrees and banks 95 degrees.

6 a.m. (AP) — Investigators are still trying to determine if a woman who died while riding a roller coaster at a Six Flags amusement park in North Texas fell from the ride dubbed the tallest steel-hybrid coaster in the world.

The accident happened just after 6:30 p.m. Friday at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington.

Park spokeswoman Sharon Parker says a woman died while riding the Texas Giant roller coaster but didn’t specify how she was killed. Witnesses tell local media outlets the woman fell.

Six Flags expressed sadness over the death and said it was temporarily closing the section of the park around the accident site. A message left for Parker by The Associated Press wasn’t returned.

Healing continues, a year after movie shooting

(AP) — Many  in Colorado embraced ways to heal Saturday as they marked the anniversary of the Aurora movie theater massacre with a city-sponsored “Day of Aurora TheatreRemembrance.”

It was one year ago that a gunman opened fire into a packed midnight screening of the Batman film “The Dark Knight Rises.” The rampage left 12 people dead and 70 wounded.

Parents, siblings and survivors of those slain attended a morning ceremony of prayer, song and remembrance outside Aurora’s city hall. Several hundred people — including police, fire personnel and members of Colorado’s congressional delegation — bowed their heads as the names of dead were read.

Gov. John Hickenlooper told the crowd that many people still struggle with unanswered questions.

Mourners clutched white roses and, as the ceremony ended, laid them beneath a large wreath.

US Supreme Court decision threatens Kansas sentences

(AP) — A U.S. Supreme Court decision that found juries should have the final say on facts triggering mandatory minimum sentences could impact “hard 50” cases

Roeder

now on appeal in Kansas,

Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett also told The Wichita Eagle (https://bit.ly/1242uBF) that the ruling could also change the way prosecutors deal with first-degree murder cases in the future.

It could also affect any “hard 50” case in Kansas that is on appeal.

Among them is the first-degree murder appeal from Scott Roeder for killing abortion provider George Tiller in 2009.

The ruling has already prompted the Kansas Attorney General’s Office to drop plans to seek a hard 50 sentence against Brett Seacat. He was convicted last month of killing his wife and setting their Kingman home on fire in 2011.
