KU Endowment receives major gift

The University of Kansas Endowment Association has announced a $1 million unrestricted donation.Screen Shot 2013-07-15 at 4.02.01 PM

The KU Endowment says Barbara Werbe Meek, a 1960 KU graduate who lives in Baton Rouge, La., has committed to a $1 million gift to the university. The gift is unrestricted, which means it can be used for any purpose at KU with the approval of the Endowment’s executive committee.

Meek chose to give the unrestricted gift because it was the wish of her late husband, Richard Meek, who died in 1999.

The Meeks met at KU and were married for nearly 40 years. Barbara earned a bachelor’s in education in 1960, while Richard received a bachelor’s in 1958 and a master’s in 1962, both in geology. He worked for Exxon.

SKIL Relocates Hays Office (VIDEO)

SKIL Resource Center, Hays, celebrated its new location with a ribbon cutting and open house Monday.  The center is one of 10 in Kansas.

Lou Ann Kibbee manages the Hays office, 510 W. 29th Street, Suite A.

Although Kibbe says it’s great to now have private offices which provide better confidentiality and there’s more accessible parking for customers, the move comes as a result of major changes at the state level.

“We had to downsize our staff, but still offer a very broad array of resources to help disabled Kansans live independently.”

SKIL, headquartered in Parsons, now offers a new Orientation and Mobility Services for Kansans with visual impairments. Find out more tonight on Hays Post News, Eagle Community TV Channel 14.

Hays Fire Department doing rescue training

Through Wednesday of this week, the City of Hays Fire Department will be conducting hands-on-training in the rescue of unconscious persons from burning Fire Departmentbuildings. This training is being conducted from 9 AM to noon each day using a house scheduled for demolition at 415 West 4th Street. This training will focus on developing the teamwork needed by first arriving firefighters to remove an unconscious adult from a basement, first floor or second floor of a burning building using both stairs and ladders, doors and windows.

To simulate the work of rescuing an unconscious person, the firefighters will be using a special 150-pound rescue mannequin. This training does not involve actual burning of the structure.

The Fire Department extends special thanks to Mr. Dan Meckenstock for allowing his building to be used for this training prior to demolition.

Food innovation is progress

Food innovation is progressInsight

By John Schlageck, Kansas Farm Bureau

Seems like not a day goes by without a media story on our country’s food supply. Some folks have concluded that the best plate may be an empty plate. How else are they going to avoid killer popcorn, monster tomatoes, drug-treated cattle, radioactive chicken or toenail hotdogs?

Some would argue we do not need GMOs. Others would say keep all antibiotics out of livestock. A few would even argue we have too much food and this is what has led to this this nation’s obesity problem.

If you are overwhelmed by news reports that question the safety of your food, you’re not alone. What can we do?

To begin with, exercise common sense.

Overconsumption and obesity are indeed health hazards, but generally speaking food scientists do not believe specific foods are health villains.

Most of us depend on advanced agricultural practices and food technology to give us an abundant, safe, reliable and affordable food supply. As the world’s population continues to increase, U.S. farmers and ranchers need to continue to find new ways to produce more food, more efficiently. Much of the world continues to face food shortages that our country can address.

Why shouldn’t we have access to delicious fruits and vegetables all year round, especially when the increased intake of such food items has been scientifically proven to be healthy and reduce the risk of disease?

Technology critics have been around since the first caveman rounded off the square edges of a stone block and chiseled out the first wheel. People fought the coming of steam locomotives and buggy makers cried out against the coming of the Model T.

Food irradiation and bioengineered foods can be summarized in one word – progress.

Food safety has always been an emotional issue. Reactions to some of these food scares confirm the old adage that a rumor can travel half way around the world before the truth pulls on its boots.

Too often today, most news translates to bad news. The prospect of sensationalism is often irresistible and easier than digging a bit deeper and finding the truth.

If more scientists stepped forward to correct this misinformation we would all be better off.

Until that occurs, be wary of food scares. On the other hand, don’t forget to eat and drink from our food supply brought to you by this nation’s farmers and ranchers. It remains the safest, best tasting in the world.

He tells Canada’s Leader-Post, “I don’t ride bulls.  I don’t try to be something that I’m not.  What you see is what you get.  A lot of people ask me the image question and I really don’t think that I have one.  I do wear the same thing I wear when I’m riding my motorcycle with my fiancée on the back.”

Of course, Brantley’s fiancée is country star Jana Kramer.  They’re expected to tie the knot pretty soon, though they’re keeping the actual wedding date a secret.

6-year-old Girl burned in Fire last week dies

(AP) — The 6-year-old Wichita girl who was burned last week in a fire has died.Screen Shot 2013-07-15 at 11.31.37 AM

Wichita fire investigator Chris Dugan said Monday the girl died Sunday. She had been hospitalized since being burned Thursday in the fire in southeast Wichita.

The fire began when she and her two sisters – ages 7 and 4 – were alone in the home.

Fire officials say the 6-year-old used a lighter to set plastic on fire, which set her clothes on fire. Neighbors pulled the girls from the home. The 7-year-old was treated and released at a hospital. The 4-year-old was not hospitalized.

The 6-year-old had second- and third-degree burns on 40 percent of her body.

Police say the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office will consider possible charges against the mother.
