KDOT Geology Crew set to begin 3 month project along highway

On Monday July 15, and continuing for approximately three months, a geology crew from the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) will start drilling and KDOTother geology survey work along U.S. 281 Highway in Russell County.

The drilling operation and geological work will take place along U.S. 281 right-of-way beginning north of Russell extending north to the K-18 junction.
The operation is necessary for the detailed design of the proposed modernization project planned under TWORKS on 15 miles of U.S. 281.

The geological survey will include the use of truck-mounted drill rigs to determine the type and thickness of soil and rock within the planned project’s corridor. When it becomes necessary for crew members to enter private property, they will first obtain permission from the landowner or tenant. Much of the survey will require vehicles near the highway. Please pay attention to the signs and workers within a construction or work zone and “Give ‘Em A Brake!”
KDOT Regional Geologist Neil Croxton will be in charge of the work.

Kansas has higher than average skin cancer rate

(AP) — As a state with a large number of outdoor workers, Kansas has a problem with skin cancer.Screen Shot 2013-07-14 at 6.19.20 PM

A 2009 study by the Center for Disease Control shows that more than a million people in the United States have been diagnosed with skin cancer. That makes it the most common cancer.

Kansas has 9 percent more new melanoma cases than the national average. About 80 Kansans die from skin cancer every year.

Bill Heer has had several suspicious spots removed from his arms, including a few that were pre-melanoma skin cancer. The former head agronomist at Kansas State’s South-Central Kansas Research Field recalls burning often while growing up on a farm in the 1950s and 1960s.

Experts say those early burns put people at risk.

Roberts & Moran Call for Emergency Haying & Grazing of CRP Lands

– U.S. Senators Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran have called for emergency haying and grazing of Conservation Reserve Screen Shot 2013-07-14 at 2.40.13 PMProgram (CRP) lands to help livestock producers suffering from sustained and critical drought.

The following is the text of the letter the Senators sent to U.S. Secretary of the Department of Agriculture (USDA), Tom Vilsack dated today:

“Thank you for your commitment to provide every USDA resource to help producers and communities deal with the devastating effects of an ongoing drought. In many Kansas counties, the drought rivals that of the 1930s. While many parts of the country have received much-needed rainfall, according to the July 2, 2013 Drought Monitor, 85 percent of Kansas is suffering from four and in some cases five years of drought.

“Illustrating the cumulative effects of drought in our state, the July 1, 2012 Drought Monitor Index listed zero percent of Kansas in the D-4 category and 18 percent D-3. Only a year later, conditions have deteriorated to 24 percent D-4 and 21 percent D-3.

“The Kansas State Farm Service Agency (FSA) Committee, FSA Executive Director Adrian Polansky, and the State Technical Committee are considering several proposals for the use of Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acreage in 2013. These proposals should be consistent with the relief that was granted in 2012.  We urge you to swiftly authorize those actions so they can effectively respond to Kansas’ deteriorating conditions. USDA should reject any proposal that adds additional requirements on a producer’s ability to utilize CRP acreage under emergency haying and grazing provisions.

“USDA agencies and personnel have forged a partnership with farmers, ranchers, local communities and state government agencies to utilize every available resource and program authority for survival and sustainability until weather patterns improve.  Without adequate forage, the Kansas cattle industry, which generates more than $7 billion in cash receipts annually, will be impacted as producers will be forced to sell their cattle. Irreplaceable genetics and traits bred for generations could be lost in the open market jeopardizing our state’s leading industry.

“Access to additional forage resources will reduce the pressure on non-CRP native grass which will help facilitate restoration of quality and quantity of vegetation for livestock and wildlife habitat when normal rainfall returns. Thank you for your consideration and timely response to this critical situation.”

Sen. Roberts is a senior member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry. Sen. Moran is a member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies.

KHAZ Country Music News: Blake Shelton Opens Up About His Late Brother, Richie

khaz blake shelton 20120329Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert co-wrote her #1 hit, “Over You,” about Blake’s late brother, Richie, who died in a car accident when Blake was growing up in Oklahoma. Blake hasn’t spoken publicly about his brother that much in the past, but he goes in-depth about Richie in a new cover story for Men’s Journal.

Blake refers to Richie as his hero in the article. He often went fishing with his big brother, and they shared a love of country music through Richie’s record collection.

“The guy was my hero,” Blake says. “Talk about worship – he was the coolest guy on Earth.”

Blake remembers exactly where he was the morning of Richie’s fatal car accident.

He says, “I was standing outside, waiting for a buddy to pick me up for school, and I heard all these ambulances go by. I didn’t think anything of it.”

Blake’s father came and got him out of school, and he realized those sirens were for his brother. Two other lives were claimed when Richie’s girlfriend’s car slammed into the back of a school bus. Richie’s girlfriend perished as well along with her four-year-old son.

Says Blake, “It was a three-casket funeral. They buried him on his fifth birthday.”

Writing “Over You” with Miranda about that loss was healing for Blake. His father got to hear the song and see it become a hit before passing away last year.

Blake also opens up about his bromance with fellow coach on The Voice, Adam Levine, and those pesky tabloid rumors and his marriage to Miranda in the Men’s Journal article. It’s now on stands.
