Child safety advocates say emergency room visits and accidental deaths for children under the age of 15 spike between May and August. Jennifer Hoekstra with Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, Mich., says nearly 40 percent of all injury-related emergency room visits and deaths happen during those months.

Drowning and motor vehicle accidents are two of the top causes, while suffocation, poisoning and falls are also common.

The organization Safe Kids World Wide says more than 9,000 children die each years from injuries suffered in such incidents each year.

Hoekstra says precautions, such as helmets for children riding bicycles, skateboards and scooters, and adult supervision are essential to keeping safe during summertime play.

Sunflower’s new Power Plant still in limbo

(AP) — A $2.8 billion coal-fired electric plant remains in limbo as political and legal hurdles prevent the southwest Kansas project from moving forward.

Sunflower Electric Power Corp. based in Hays received a state permit to build its 895-megawatt generating station in 2010. But state and federal lawsuits filed by interests seeking to block expansion of the state’s coal footprint have stymied progress.

A federal appeals court in May rejected a Sunflower request to overturn a 2012 federal judge’s ruling that required a full environmental review before the project can be considered for approval.

Sunflower spokeswoman Cindy Hertel told Hays Post the company is still reviewing the decision. Because the decision directing the Rural Utilities Service to do a study didn’t amount to a final order, the appeals-court panel said it didn’t have the jurisdiction under federal law to hear an appeal.

Three-quarters of the electricity produced by the Holcomb plant would be shipped to a cooperative in Colorado. Sunflower officials say selling the electricity would help keep rates down for the utility’s Kansas customers.

Two Students Face Sentencing for Arson Death

court-gavel-300x192.png(AP) — Prosecutors are asking a judge to impose a lengthy prison sentence against a Kansas State University student who set a blaze that killed a university researcher.

They’re urging U.S. District Judge Julie Robinson to sentence Patrick Martin Scahill to 40 years in prison on Monday.

Federal sentencing guidelines recommend 27 to 33 years. The defense, meanwhile, is pleading for a shorter sentence. His attorney cites his client’s remorse and acceptance of responsibility.

But prosecutors say igniting gasoline at an occupied apartment complex is monstrous.

Scahill and Virginia Amanda Griese pleaded guilty in April to setting the February fire to create a diversion that would prevent police from finding narcotics. The fire killed Vasanta Pallem, a 34-year-old postdoctoral researcher in chemical engineering.
