New Kansas water slide touted as world’s fastest

Screen Shot 2013-11-20 at 12.04.00 PM(AP) — At about 17 stories tall, a water slide opening this spring in Kansas City, Kan., is being touted as a contender for the world’s fastest.

The Schlitterbahn water park company is keeping the ride’s exact height secret until an official measuring event this spring. But they promise it will exceed the height of the current world-record-holding slide in Brazil. Riders on that slide have been clocked at 65 mph.

Thrill seekers will get their first chance to ride the new slide when the park opens May 23.

Park marketing and sales director Layne Pitcher says the slide will attract “adrenaline junkies who are always looking for that next biggest, coolest thrill.”

Fort Hays State volleyball had four All-MIAA selections for 2013, as Taylor Mares, Makenzie Weinman, Jenna Ulrich and Mallory Flagor were named honorable mention.

Mares, a junior from Fort Collins, Colo., led the team in kills (290) and kills per set (2.74), playing in 106 sets on the year. The right-side hitter started in 22 of the 30 matches, racking up a .219 hitting percentage while adding 61 blocks and 53 digs. Her 322 points (3.04per set) were also a team-high. Mares has now earned All-MIAA honorable mention honors for two consecutive seasons (2012 and 2013)

From Phillipsburg, Kan., Weinman led the squad with 500 digs on the season, narrowly missing out on reaching the 1,500 dig mark for her career. The senior libero average 4.90 digs per set and had 16 service aces. Weinman appeared in all 30 matches, playing 102 sets. This is the second straight honorable mention selection for Weinman after she nabbed the honors in 2012.

Ulrich led the team with 143 blocks (1.32 per set) from the middle hitter slot, adding 206 kills with a .229 hitting percentage. The senior from Luray, Kan., broke the school’s career block record for the NCAA Division II era during 2013, finishing with 438 for her career. Ulrich notched 293.5 points for the season, averaging 2.72 points per set. This is Ulrich’s third All-MIAA honor; she was second-team in 2012 and honorable mention in 2011.

Flagor totaled 243 kills while playing in 98 sets this season. The sophomore from Hoisington, Kan., started in six of her 29 matches, averaging 2.48 kills per set and blocking 59 total attacks (five solo). The right-side hitter racked up 275 points for the Tigers this season and had a .165 hitting percentage.

Mares and Flagor return for the Tigers in 2014.

Chiefs Release DT Toribio, Sign DT Love

Chiefs logoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs have released defensive tackle Anthony Toribio and signed former New England Patriots defensive tackle Kyle Love.

The Chiefs made the moves Tuesday, two days after a loss to the Denver Broncos.

Toribio joined the Chiefs in 2010 and had hung around the past four seasons, despite having to impress three different head coaches. He was pressed into service against the Broncos on Sunday night when Mike DeVito had to leave a 27-17 loss with a leg injury.

It’s unknown how long DeVito will be out.

Love started 25 games over the past three seasons in New England, but was waived in May after he was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. He was claimed by the Jaguars and cut in September.

Shower Head Exchange Update

City of Ellisshower headA group of Fort Hays State University Students is partnering with the City of Ellis to help promote water conservation.

Water for the Heartland is a group of seven students from FHSU’s Leadership 310 class that is joining with the city to set up a low-flow shower head exchange program for residents who live within the city limits.

The continuing drought and lack of rainfall have contributed to depletion of the Big Creek Aquifer, Ellis’ only water source, forcing the city to declare a Stage 3 Water Emergency earlier this year.

According to the release from Water for the Heartland, swapping an older shower head for a low-flow design can save 40 percent on water use.  Shortening showering time from 10 minutes to five minutes with the addition of a low flow shower head can save 17.5 gallons of water, or up to 70 percent of the water needed per shower.

Ellis residents can bring their older shower heads to the City Clerk’s office and exchange it for a new, low-flow shower head, for free. A water saving faucet aerator will also be offered free of charge to city residents.

The students from the Water for the Heartland Team will also have a booth at the Follow the Star Craft Fair on Saturday, December 7th with water conservation tips and educational activities for the whole family.  City residents may also exchange shower heads at the Follow the Star Craft Fair.

FHSU classifed staff vote to leave state civil service

fhsu victor e tigerWith 231 of 308 eligible employees voting, classified staff at Fort Hays State University voted Tuesday by a 187-44 margin to leave the state civil service system to become support staff employed directly by the university.

Patricia Duffey, secretary-treasurer of the university’s Classified Senate, said in an email announcing the results that a support staff handbook “will now be presented to the Kansas Board of Regents for approval.”

“Once approved,” she said, “a committee along with the HR Office will begin developing the next steps.”

Those next steps include updating descriptions of positions and salary levels, creating an evaluation form, appointing a disciplinary hearing board, developing training materials and setting a schedule for the conversion.

The change will take effect at the beginning of the next fiscal year, which begins June 8, 2014.

Kansas Star Pierson to Miss Rest of Season

Kansas Jayhawk LogoLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Top playmaker Tony Pierson will miss the rest of the season for Kansas because of recurring symptoms from a concussion that he sustained against Texas Tech last month.

Jayhawks coach Charlie Weis said Tuesday that “a healthy Tony is critical to the success of our program, but not at the risk of Tony.”

Pierson missed most of four games after he sustained a concussion while getting tackled Oct. 5. He returned Nov. 9 at Oklahoma State, but took another big hit in a win over West Virginia on Saturday that ended the Jayhawks’ 27-game Big 12 losing streak.

Pierson is the Jayhawks’ leading receiver with 24 catches for 333 yards and a touchdown. He’s also run for 163 yards.

Kansas visits Iowa State on Saturday before hosting Kansas State to finish the season.

County Seeks Exemption from Concealed Carry Law (VIDEO)

concealed carryThe Ellis County Commission has approved a resolution for the county to seek a four-year exemption to the state’s new concealed carry law.

The Kansas Legislature passed a law earlier this year prohibiting many state and local government agencies from banning concealed guns on their premises unless they provide security measures. Like several other counties, Ellis County had a six-month exemption from imposing the measure, but that expires Dec. 31.

County Administrator Greg Sund, told Hays Post the resolution seeks a four-year exemption and the proposal needs to be submitted after the first of the year:

The county would need to have Sheriff Ed Harbin go over the buildings and make recommendations on how to improve safety and security of the building and the sheriff could then draw up a plan for each building.

Nursing program recognized

ncktech beloitThe North Central Kansas Technical College (NCK Tech) Department of Nursing has achieved two number one rankings from the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. The Council ranked the Practical Nursing (PN) program 1st of the 21 similar nursing programs across Kansas and 1st of 1,045 similar programs in the U.S. and U.S. territories. The rankings are based on the percentage of graduates passing the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) during the 2013 testing year, compared to other programs with at least ten graduates who took the examination during the same reporting period. The PN program also achieved a 100% first time pass rate for the year. This percentage is based on the number of graduates who took the NCLEX for the first time and passed the examination. The NCK Tech pass rate exceeded both state and national averages.

The NCK Tech PN program recently completed a Kansas State Board of Nursing (KBSN) accreditation visit and was recommended for a 5 year accreditation, which is the highest possible accreditation status for a PN program.

The NCLEX examination measures the competencies needed to perform safely and effectively as a newly licensed, entry-level nurse and is the capstone of nursing program studies. The NCK Tech PN program is a one year certificate program. Patti Scott is the Nursing program Department Chair of the NCK Tech Beloit campus. Additional Nursing faculty on the Beloit campus are: Annette Saint, Nicki Kasl, Christine Budke, Rebecca Pellant, and Erica Knox.

DA: Man shot himself fleeing robbery

(AP) — Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett says a man fleeing a robbery in April died from a self-inflicted gunshot and not from a shot fired by a sheriff’s deputy.

Bennett announced Tuesday that an autopsy found that 26-year-old Horace L. Gwyn died after shooting himself in the head while trying to flee from a robbery at a Credit Union of America office in Wichita.

He says at the same time Gwyn shot himself, a Sedgwick County sheriff’s deputy shot him in the upper back. Bennett says that shot would not have been fatal.

Bennett also says the deputy was justified in shooting at Gwyn, who had fired a shot at him.
