Alert clerks important in spotting fake bills (VIDEO)

Hays Police are looking for this man suspected of passing counterfeit $100 bills at Westlake Ace Hardware and Radio Shack. (Photo from HPD)

More instances of counterfeit bills passed in Hays have been reported to the Hays Police Department.

On Friday, the Hays Police Department received reports of fake $100 bills turning up recently at Radio Shack, Westlake Ace Hardware and Hastings.

Investigator Jeff Ridgeway is one of the HPD officers working on these and other recent counterfeit money cases.

“There are numerous security features built into U-S paper currency,” says Ridgeway, “but an alert store clerk is also important:”

Security features on bills printed by the U-S treasury include color shifting ink, watermarks, security threads and micro-printing.

Report: Wind, hard freeze spur Kansas harvest

sorghum harvest(AP) — The latest government crop update says Kansas farmers were able to get most of their remaining crops harvested last week amid a few windy days and a hard freeze.

The National Agricultural Statistics Service reported Monday that a few areas of slow-drying sorghum and double-crop soybeans remain to be cut.

Its latest report shows 94 percent of the state’s corn has been cut, while harvest of sorghum is at 88 percent and soybeans at 91 percent.

Cattlemen in western Kansas have been able to take advantage of good stands of wheat to run their herds on wheat pasture. About 96 percent of the wheat has emerged.

NASS rates the wheat crop as 7 percent excellent, 58 percent good, 32 percent fair, and 3 percent poor to very poor.

Sen. Moran on CFTC’s MF Global Restitution Announcement

MoranU.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), a member of the Senate Banking Committee, released the following statement regarding the Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s (CFTC) investigation of MF Global:
“The actions of MF Global harmed investors and jeopardized confidence in the security of financial markets. The $1.2 billion restitution fine and $100 million civil penalty announced today are important steps in restoring trust in markets and making certain bad actors in our financial system face appropriate consequences. Farmers, ranchers and investors will soon learn that their long-overdue funds have been ordered to be restored, but they should also know this is not the end of the story.

“The CFTC continues litigation with former-MF Global chairman Jon Corzine and other senior management in pursuit of justice. Nothing can undo the damage to these segregated account holders caused by the actions of MF Global. But I am hopeful the actions of the court today begin to repair some of the trust in the futures market that was lost when MF Global filed for bankruptcy.”

Sternberg fossils pulled from Tuesday’s auction

Sternberg MuseumDr. Laura Wilson is breathing a sigh of relief tonight, although it may be temporary relief.

She found out late this afternoon that seven fossils collected by Charles Sternberg in the 1920s are no longer for sale by the San Diego Natural History Museum (SDNHM).

Wilson is the Chief Curator and Curator of Paleontology of Fort Hays State University’s Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays.

The seven large vertebrate fossils collected and sold to the San Diego Museum by Sternberg are among the 12 fossils listed for sale in the Bonhams public auction scheduled for tomorrow, November 19.  Amid an outcry from paleontologists and other museums, SDNHM has pulled the fossils from the auction.

Charles H. Sternberg was part of the well-known fossil hunting family that included George, the former director of Sternberg Museum. The Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays is named for the family.

FHSU Men’s Soccer Begins NCAA Tourney Play Friday in Kansas City

https://www.horizonappliance.com/

The Fort Hays State men’s soccer team now knows when and where they will play their NCAA tournament match with Lindenwood.

The Tigers and Lions, who both received first-round byes, will face each other Friday at four-30 at Bourke Field on the Rockhurst campus. The winner will advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals where it will play the winner of the Rockhurst/Lewis contest.

The Tigers enter Friday’s game with a 12-4-3 record and are ranked 20th in the country. Lindenwood is 17-0-3 record and it is ranked first in NCAA Division II. The two teams have played twice this season with Lindenwood going 1-0-1. In the regular season, the Lions won 4-3 in St. Charles, Mo. In the MIAA Tournament finals in Olathe, Kan., the two teams tied 0-0 before Lindenwood won the shootout.

On the other side of the Super Regional bracket, Rockhurst is 15-3-3 overall and Lewis is 13-2-5. Rockhurst is 14th in NCAA Division II and Lewis is No. 25. Those two teams have met once this year with Rockhurst winning 2-0 in Romeoville, Ill.

The winner of the Super Regional will advance to the Final Four in Evans, Ga. The semifinal games will be played on Dec. 5 and the championship contest is on Dec. 7.

Former deputy to serve life sentence out of Kansas

seacat(AP) — A former Sedgwick County sheriff’s deputy sentenced to life for murdering his wife has been moved to a prison outside Kansas.

Kansas Department of Corrections spokesman Jeremy Barclay said on Monday that Brett Seacat has been transferred to an out-of-state prison. Barclay says Seacat’s transfer follows a protocol aimed at preventing inmates with law enforcement backgrounds from serving time with inmates they may have had a role in sending to prison.

Barclay says the location of the prison where the 37-year-old Seacat was sent hasn’t been released because of safety concerns.

Seacat was sentenced in August for first-degree murder and other charges in the 2011 death of his wife, 34-year-old Vashti Seacat, and for setting a fire that destroyed their home while their two children were inside.

Another federal Internet gambling bill

gamble gambling (AP) — If Congress makes no progress on a national framework for online gambling this session, it won’t be for a lack of legislation.

Two lawmakers introduced bills over the summer that would legalize some form of Internet gambling nationwide. And just last week, Rep. Jim McDermott, a Democrat from Washington, introduced a bill that would tax federally-sanctioned online wagering.

The bill could compel online operators to hand over up to 12 cents of every dollar players deposited. The federal government would take four cents. The state or tribe in which the gambler is playing could also opt to collect 8 cents on the dollar. McDermott introduced similar bills in 2010 and 2011, without success.

Judge: Kansas jury to hear ‘Hard 50’ case

jail prison (AP) — A Sedgwick County judge has ruled that a special jury will determine if a Wichita man should receive a Hard 50 prison sentence for killing his girlfriend.

District Judge William Woolley said a law passed in September by Kansas lawmakers can be applied to the case of Anson Bernhardt, who was convicted of first-degree murder in the 2012 stomping death of 38-year-old Amber Kostner.

Woolley says in his written ruling that the new state law applies to this case, and the state may seek to impose the Hard 50 retroactively on Bernhardt.

Prosecutors originally wanted Woolley to impose the Hard 50 sentence on Bernhardt, but that was blocked by a June U.S. Supreme Court ruling that said juries must make factual findings that increase a mandatory minimum sentence.
